Durham County Sheriffs Office

TOUGH LOVE
Durham County Sheriff Mike Andrews and his staff are concerned about Durhams at-risk youth. A priority of my office is to educate youth about the consequences of poor decisions," Sheriff Andrews said. "It is my hope that our new CHOICES program will have a positive impact in our community and help our most vulnerable youth." CHOICES is open to males and females between the ages of 11 and 16. A referral from a law enforcement officer or parent is required to participate. Parental participation is also mandatory. Program participants visit the Durham County Jail, where they are fingerprinted, have their mug shot taken, and are dressed into jail clothing. They are then briefly placed into a holding cellunder close supervisionto experience the reality of confinement. Before being released, participants speak with an inmate volunteer about the consequences of making poor decisions and the pitfalls of a criminal record and incarceration.

INTERVIEW WITH DEPUTY PAUL SHERWIN BY: MEISA CROSS

Shield: What is the mission and vision of the program? Deputy Sherwin: We strive to provide Durham residents with a program which will educate young people about the consequences of engaging in criminal activity. The Office of the Sheriff wants to give young residents an introduction into the Criminal Justice System so they can see the ramifications of criminal behavior. Shield: Why did your department decided to start the program? Deputy Sherwin: To make a positive impact on our youth and to let them know that it is okay to be a good kid. We all have situations that if not for the Grace of God we too may have been in the same situation. We want to have a positive impact on the future by investing in our youth today. Shield: How many kids go through the program at any given time? Deputy Sherwin: 10. We hold the process 6 times a year and have a Teen Summit 6 times a year where the kids return to speak / interact with others who have been through the program. Shield: How do kids get enrolled into the program? Deputy Sherwin: Parents complete an application that is screened, home visit made and a meeting is held with the prospective child. Applications are picked up from Durham Housing with Tammy Jacobs and Ashley Johnson.

Shield: How many officers work the program? Deputy Sherwin: We have a core group of 9 Deputies & Detention Officers. Shield: Do you keep up with the kids and do follow ups once they have gone through the program? Deputy Sherwin: Absolutely. We will keep up with them for a year. Shield: How does this impact the department as a whole, as well as the officers involved? Deputy Sherwin: I think that the officers receive a lot from the program with regards to perspective. We see youth beyond where they are but the possibility of all that they could be in the future. There is something so rewarding when a child finally opens up and begins to speak about their situation. When the green light comes on in their eyes and you see the child that is inside them. Shield: What is your favorite success story? Deputy Sherwin: We had a young man with a lot of anger towards his mother because he felt that she was the reason his father left. We spent time speaking with him, encouraging him and having his SRO connect with him. His mother reports that they are now doing very well. Shield: How does the program effect any inmates who may be involved? Do you see a change in their behavior to want to see a change in themselves as well as the kids? Deputy Sherwin: I think that the inmates see their youth in the youth that we serve. I think that it affords them an opportunity to reach back and through the other youth they themselves make amends. Shield: What message do you have for the parents for once the program is complete as it doesn't just end once the program is done? Deputy Sherwin: We will actually work with the kids for a year after they complete the program. The School Resource Officers are notified so that they too can offer words of encouragement, advice or simply be there to listen in the event that there is a need. The parents are also informed that this is a process and not an overnight success. Shield: What message do you have for people who want to put their child through the program but may have read reports and articles that these types of program actually cause more harm than good, and are the statistics in favor of these kids being repeat offenders after the program. Deputy Sherwin: Conventional thought says that Scared Straight programs do not work however we are taking a different approach. We are more of a Child Empowerment Program because we try to show them options and motivate them to make the best CHOICE. Our program partners with F.A.M.E (Family Academic Mentoring Empowerment) which is a part of Durham Housing Authority. They work with the parents with regards to parenting strategies and other avenues of support. We also have Wanda Boone with the Durham TRY program who speaks with both child and parents about positive decision making and issues surrounding substance abuse. Shield: What recommendations do they have for other departments considering starting a similar program? Deputy Sherwin: The value of the program will not be in the number of members that you have assisting, but the number who care to make a difference. The old saying is, no one cares how much you know, until they really know how much you care. Shield: What is the contact information for parents who may be interested in having their child go through the program? Deputy Sherwin: Tammy Jacobs or Ashley Johnson from Durham Housing Authority. 919 -683-1551

10-8 WITH THE CHIEF

My husbands department has a ride along policy. This enables me to go on what I call Ride Along Date Night. In all actuality, it enables me the spouse of an officer to see his training first hand, sometimes even up close and personal, and in doing so, it has given me a greater appreciation for how well-trained he really is. There are many discussions that take place during these ride alongs. We have discussed everything from 10 codes to what we are going to buy the kids for Christmas. To say the least, every time I go out with him, it is a new learning experience for me. The more I learn, the more I understand the different things he deals with on the streets. It not only helps me as a LEOW, it helps me in my roles with WBTB to encourage and support other spouses. Especially those whose spouses departments may not have a ride along policy. This column is the insight and ramblings of Lahoma Police Chief Wife, and Shield Editor, Melisa Cross. All content is from personal perspective and not that of the Lahoma PD.

One Family * One Vision * One Badge

THE FAMILY OF THE THIN BLUE LINE
On January 7th, here in Oklahoma we said goodbye to one of our own. Chief Byron Cox had been in law enforcement for 36 years. He was a husband, a father, a grandfather and the mentor and leader of a department in which he held the title of Chief for 14 years. This prompted a status that I put on my Facebook page.
Today, like many of our LE family across Oklahoma, we will be making the journey say goodbye to one of our own. As the wife of a Chief myself, my heart is broken for Chief Cox's wife and she is in my continued thoughts and prayers. A Chief is the father or mother of their department. They take many sons and daughters under their wing. They watch them grow into strong, honorable men and women who stand to protect their communities. And the spouse of a Chief, well in some cases as my mine, we adopt those sons and daughters and care for and love them dearly. We see them through the protective eyes of their Chief who wants to see them become the best officer they can be. To lose the pillar of your department would be something so very hard to bear. To say goodbye to not just your leader, but in a sense your department parent, words can not express how difficult that must be. As the wife of a Chief, it is a thought that is unfathomable and yet one that is always lurking in the back of my mind.

THE FAMILY CONNECTION

Lahoma PD Police Chief Lloyd (Butch) Cross joined the Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. team in November of 2013 as the Families Behind the Badge program director. Believing in the mission of Wives Behind the Badge after being involved with his wife Melisa, he chose to get more involved and show that officer-involvement is just as important as spousal involvement.

FOREVER FAMILY
As we made the trip to the service, it stirred up a conversation about how much a family we truly are. I myself look upon the officers in my husbands department with fierce protection and pride. To see how they bond together and have each others backs, that they are able to joke and play around and enjoy each others company, so protect and serve as a team. I cant help but feel like a proud mother, and at times, and I treat them as such making sure they have cookies, brownies, dinner and such. It made me think of the harsh realization that at any given moment, we could lose one of our sons or daughters. Not just to death, but to another department, to a job change, to any number of scenarios. It settles in your heart like stone how precious these officers are, how truly family they have become, and how we are enriched by having them in our lives.

CBP Wife

VERIFIED MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

CBP Wife has been a member of the Wives Behind the Badge forums since November 2011 and is this months verified member spotlight.
CBP Wife and her husband lived on the same street as adults. As she walks for exercise, she would walk by his house every day. He would sit out on the deck and read and eventually they began to talk when she would walk by. After a few months, the talking led to dating and the two were married 3 months later. The couple have been married for 20 years, have a son and daughter, as well as 2 grandchildren, who are the apple of CBP Wifes eye, and 2 cats named Tezzie and Sebastian. Her husband started his career in law enforcement later in their marriage and has been a LEO for 6 years. One of the familys traditions takes place on Christmas Eve, having Chinese food for dinner. While the tradition started due to not wanting to cook, the kids feel it started as a special treat for them. CBP Wife works full time at an elementary school with special needs children, a job that she loves dearly. Her hobbies include shopping and gardening and her biggest pet peeve is slow drivers. When it comes to movies, she lists comedy as her favorite genre due to needing the laughs with both her and her husbands jobs being stressful. If given the opportunity for an all-expenses paid dream vacation, without question, it would be to Hawaii.

Volunteering with the Maine Auxiliary, CBP Wife sees WBTB continuing to help families as we are currently. Helping spouses and mates deal with the special issues that only other LE families know, and by continuing to have a wonderful support system of people to talk to. A sisterhood.
Finally, when asked the famous youre stranded on a deserted island, what three items do you take with you question, she replied Her husband A machete A lighter

We would like to thank CBP Wife for being our verified spotlight member of the month. To learn more about becoming a member of the Wives Behind the Badge forums, please visit www.wivesbehindthebadge.org/ forums.

Yesterday I was out shopping and realized I forgot my Debit card. I had no cash but I really Needed that coffee. I walked to the corner until I found a Hobo. Hey, can I borrow $5. Promise that my husband will bring you some donuts and coffee after he catches the bull who stole my car while I was feeding the parking meter and now I'll have to walk up hill both ways to school All the while carrying a... big polka-dot bear I won at the state fair in one arm and a giant stuffed Tigger in the And my pants started to Ride up my crack and I Pulled them out, breaking my socialite status. I proceeded to the local liquor store to buy some cheap wine and Powerball tickets. Then I went to the meat market and bought some... Doritos and pickles cause I'm pretty sure my goldfish is pregnant and has been craving that to feed the 38 babies she will deliver and then I will have to buy A pair of Louboutin high heeled pumps because The red souls match my new Lamborghini that Santa brought me because I am a spoiled woman who always gets her way which also includes a full tank of gas and Starbucks in my fur-lined boots and leather jacket. Then one day I went to the Magic Kingdom and gave Tigger a BIG hug but the deputy dawg hot dawg stand to buy hot dawgs Pooh got jealous and knocked me right into a very large pot of honey! Oh dear! It was sticky and he tried to wipe it on Piglet, but Piglet saw us coming and ran away! I realized that Tigger needed to wipe the honey on someone, poor Eeyore He's always picked but so cute and Then the White Rabbit ran by on his way to.... the merry go round where he tossed His cookies on the carousel barker. The guy was furious and kicked everyone out! After that we decided to hit up the Waffle house and then decided to Dance in the rain because who doesn't love getting drenched in a storm? It is about time to get a towel in the laundry room and dry off all the droplets clinging to My wet, messy hair because wet hair makes me very mad Especially if I haven't had my coffee yet But, now that I've had a cup of coffee I'm ready to take on The fire breathing dragons and purple attack bunnies who are figments of my sleep deprived delirious mind because I am hyped up on caffeine and pills from the local corner farmer's market that specializes in Witch craft and sorcery. I also picked up some Wax to make candles and a book about How to cook fish sticks 101! Next I was off to get some ingredients but dropped my Tigger in Connie's arms. Now that both of my hands are free, I'm gonna grab me a donut and take it to bed!!! Because I am exhausted!! Who knew a police wife could accomplish so much in one day!

FORUMS BIG SISTER PROGRAM

Joining a new social media platform can be confusing and at the start difficult to navigate. Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. provides encouraging and personable big sisters to new forums members to help them find their way around the boards and be an instant source of friendship and encouragement. Recognizing a forums big sister is simple as most have a special graphic in their signature line, and their activity indicators are green.

Each month a big sister is chosen for the Big Sister of the Month, recognizing her dedication to the big sister program. ~FORUMS MEMBER TESTIMONY ~ The forums at Wives Behind the Badge are a strong source of support for LEO wives. The forums are there, whether your husband is working graves and you are having trouble sleeping at 2:00 in the morning or when you just want to check in before you start your day for laughter and camaraderie. Actually, it is more than camaraderie, it is a sisterhood. These ladies will support and encourage you as you face struggles and hardship, celebrate your victories and laugh with you about one of the many adventures this crazy life takes us on. Right from the beginning, you will notice that the environment of the forums is warm, friendly and positive. I felt immediately welcomed. There are wives who are just starting out on their journey as a LEO wife, others whose LEO is nearing retirement and everything in between. These ladies are facing or have faced issues that affect all LEO wives at one time or another and are loaded with knowledge, from the mundane questions about storing all that gear to family issues such as juggling the holidays with a LEO schedule, and of course dealing with serious issues our LEOs are going through on the job. When you are frustrated or aggravated over things your non LEO friends and family do not understand or when you are feeling lonely, in that I have not seen my husband awake in the last 12 days kind of lonely, that is when the Wives Behind the Badge forums can offer you one of its most important gifts, understanding understanding from fellow sisters who stand beside you as you stand beside your LEO.

TESTIMONIALS
We are pleased to share testimonies from one of our forums members who tell us their story about how they came to join the Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. forums and what this special sisterhood means to them. This months testimony is from Gina (Momto3boys1princess) who has been a member of the forums since August 2010.

Missouri.auxiliary@wivesbehindthebaddge.org AUXILIARY HIGHLIGHT

Our Missouri Auxiliary is #11 with Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. and, like our other chapters, is prepared to provide support to law enforcement officers and their families.
The Auxiliary program is still new and WBTB has dedicated much time and energy in 2014 to building stronger resources for these programs in each state. During fundraisers, any money raised is flagged for use within the state it was used. Our most active program, H.A.L.O.S. Helping Aid Lost Officers Survivors, provides an individual as an Angel to a family who has fallen victim to a Line of Duty Death this program is functioning and available in the state of Missouri should the unthinkable occur. With Police Week rapidly approaching in May, we are honored to provide support to families of the fallen. During National Thank a Police Officer Day, we will create many goodie baskets, arrange for cards to be sent to departments and will always seek opportunities for fundraisers that benefit our beloved law enforcement community. If you would like more information on becoming a volunteer with the Missouri chapter, email missouri.auxiliary@wivesbehindthebadge.org.

FAMILIES BEHIND THE BADGE

Families Behind the Badge is a program that is designed for the extended family members of law enforcement officers. FBTB is the place where all family members are welcome to draw support, including a forum designed specifically for families. In the Fall of 2013, Police Chief Lloyd (Butch) Cross stepped into the role of director of the program to bring a fresh perspective on offering support to the family unit.

THE POWER OF A CLEAN WASHING MACHINE

For an clean washing machine that sparkles, ditch the harsh cleaners and keep cash in your pocketbook with this technique!

BY MELISA CROSS
Ive noticed over the past couple of months when running laundry, there was a very strong musty smell each time I ran the washer. After having seen the different commercial for washer cleaning products, I wanted to see if there was a natural way that I could do this, without spending extra money. Sure enough, after a quick google search, I found a step by step process, complete with photos, that involved 2 things that most of us have in our cabinets all the time. White vinegar and baking soda. With these two handy household miracles, I followed the directions provided and the results? A sparkling clean washing machine that no longer smells musty and moldy. Keep in mind, there is scrubbing and elbow grease involved, but the end result is fantastic.and I dont mean the cleaner. Click the link below for the step by step how to process to make your washing machine glisten and gleam.

Long live your laundry!"

Most busy moms regardless if they are a working mom or a stay at home mom, if they could have one wish, it would be for the cleaning fairy to come an take care of all those pesky chores that there never seems to be enough hours in the day to get to and that just wont go away. Dusting, sweeping, moping, dishes, laundry..its an ever ongoing part of our lives and sometimes we just have to chose between getting the job hours or kid hours off after fixing dinner before running to the ballgame, concert or recital. One of my favorite websites EVER is flylady.net. It provides a wealth of organizational and cleaning on a busy schedule, but thats just the tip of the ice burg.

MELISA CROSS

Melisa Cross is the wife of Chief Lloyd (Butch) Cross, the Families Behind the Badge Director and together they raise 4 boys ages 20, 17, 17, and 14. (You guessed it...twins). The family unit, being very important to Melisa and Butch drove them to become facilitators of the P.O.L.I.C.E. Families class, written by WBTB Chaplain and Board Member Mendi Keatts, and designed to help solidify the support system for law enforcement agents nationwide. Having been married for 21 years, adventuring through all walks of life ranging from the military to EMS before finding law enforcement, Melisa and Butch have discovered that through thick and thin, no matter what, the family is worth the fight.

Learning To Fly
BY MELISA CROSS
The first thing I want to point our regarding flylady.net is this. There is a TON of information to go through. There is everything from house cleaning, finance organization, kids challenges and more. To try to jump in and just DO, youll want to call me crazy and run away. Start with the basics and the Baby Steps. Do I do all of this every day? NOPE. As much as I would like to, I have gone to gleaning from the site the things that work for me. I have printed off the Deep Cleaning List for when Im ready to really tackle the whole house, but for day to day I go with the daily chore that is listed on the website. Each weekend, if you are signed up on their mailing list, a sneak peek for the week is sent out. It gives you exactly what Zone (area of the house) and daily chore that needs to be tackled. Each week, you are working in a different room of the home and most of the time you are taking care o f things that arent your common picking up and vacuuming type chores. This will hit things such as, going through your sock drawer and getting rid of the mismatched pairs and ones with holes or going through and ditching magazines that have piled up and are just sitting collecting dust. Adding in the daily flight plan item, you are only adding in an additional 5-10 minutes worth of cleaning into your day and gives you a feeling of accomplishment that you dont get with just everyday, standard chores. Visit Flylady.net today and learn how to fly!

BLUE LINE KIDS

When Families Behind the Badge was created in the spring of 2011, Wives Behind the Badge wanted to also create a safe and fun environment for the children of law enforcement officers. We wanted a place, a forums section on the Wives Behind the Badge forums, for kids ages 9 to 17, where they could safely gather to meet other kids living the same lives they live, as police kids. After much thought and consideration, Blue Line Kids was born. Blue Line Kids is not only a forum, but also a program centered around the lives of police kids. Through our forums and local events, we hope to create a fun, educational, and supportive group where our kids feel comfortable and welcome and find lasting friendships.

Our future is a little bit brighter with her in it meet Kellie Abbott. Kellie is a freshman at Mississippi State University studying biochemistry, but before she started her college journey, Kellie was determined to make a difference. When high school presented her with a senior project to study non-profits and their importance to our society, she decided to take it a step further and start her own non-profit. Kellies mother, Sandra Abbott, is a retired supervisor with the Shreveport Police Department, and her father, Wayne Abbott, is a deputy with the Caddo Parish Sheriffs Office. In 2010, Sgt. Tim Prunty of Shreveport Police Department was lost in the line of duty when he was ambushed by a civilian and suffered a gunshot wound causing severe bleeding. It was this incident that sparked Kellies interest to spread awareness about the importance of effective first aid kits with items such as QuikClot Combat Gauze to help stop bleeding and prevent future traumatic incidents like the untimely death of Sgt. Prunty. One morning before school, Kellie heard a news report about Belt Trauma Kits containing QuikClot that saved an officers life and it couldnt have been more perfect. If one more article or story is read by one officer who is unaware of QuikClot, maybe it could save a life, Kellie thought. In doing research, Belt Trauma Kits are approximately $67.50 a piece, so Kellie designed her signature Blue Forever t-shirt to sell and set a goal of selling enough t-shirts to purchase ten Belt Trauma Kits. Kellie traveled to law enforcement roll call meetings and set up a social media website, Twitter, and Facebook. With her first sales, she sold 447 Blue Forever t-shirts and raised $6,700.00. She even received a donation check from Z-Medica, the maker of QuikClot, enabling her to purchase 100 Belt Trauma Kits for the Shreveport Police Department.

Making A Difference For A Brighter Future continued

Kellie may have completed and passed her senior project, but her mission to supply every officer in the State of Louisiana and spread awareness nationwide of the impact and importance of Belt Trauma Kits is on-going. To date, Kellie has been able to purchase a total of 235 Belt Trauma Kits which have been given to the Bossier City Police Department, Bossier Parish School Resource Officers, Haughton Police Department, Shreveport Police Department and Desoto Parish Sheriff Deputies. Kellie said her biggest success has not only been meeting several inspiring officers, but bringing the awareness of the necessity for $67.50 Belt Trauma Kits with QuikClot. As of July 2013, Blue Forever is a Louisiana non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. You can help spread Kellies mission by purchasing a shirt on her website at http://www.blueforever.org/ and by following her event page on Facebook.

A NEW YEARS MIRACLE

New year celebrations with the hustle and bustle of the busy street lights in Montgomery County, but not all were celebrating until they found Officer Ben Crumin of Montgomery Police Department. Six years after his college football days at James Madison University, Officer Crumlin still looks just as intimidating, but his heart was a soft as open as ever the night of December 30, 2013.
Photo - http:// privateofficer.org/ montgomery-countypolice-officer-savesinfants-lifeprivateofficer-com/

This time of year in Maryland, Officer Crumlin was expecting to be looking out for dangerous early New Years Eve party-going drivers on the road, but instead the speeding car that was rushing towards him with flashing lights and honking horns was a frantic husband and wife with a 10 year old boy and a 9 day old baby. The father started yelling to Officer Crumlin that their baby was not breathing. Officer Crumlin immediately called for an ambulance and rushed to the car to perform an airway check and administer CPR to breath life into this baby boy once again. Officer Crumlin credits the Green Cross Training CPR training the Montgomery Police Department is lucky enough to receive. Thanks to Officer Crumlin and his quick response to the situation, the tiny infant was able to ring in the new year healthy and vibrant his parents arms.

Have you ever found yourself intrigued by the growth of moss and lichen on the side of a large Oak tree? This is what sparked Michelle Romanowski to discover her own hidden talent. Michelle is a member of the Oregon Auxiliary of the Wives Behind The Badge and is a Big SisterCoordinator and a Moderator with the forum. Some may have already known that about Michelle, what you may have not known is the love she has for photography. In 1992, Michelle bought her first Canon SLR. This is a single-lens reflex camera that has an optical component viewfinder; this would be pre-digital era. A mere 14 years later in 2006, after Michelle introduced the world to her daughter, she graduated to a Canon DSLR and entered the digital era of photography. This opened Michelles eyes to a new and exciting world of photography.

www.MichelleRomanowski. smugmug.com

Through the years, Michelle has cultivated her photography. She explained, I dabbled here and there with taking photos of flowers at my neighbors house. Then I started noticing the moss and lichen all over our trees. Ive always noticed it in passing but never got up close and really taken a look at it. I found myself searching for different types of lichen. Id hike on old logging roads, find Pioneer Cemeteries and just look for whatever I wanted to photograph. But I found myself going back to my neighbors house to take photos of her beautiful flowers. Michelle had the opportunity to attend a class by Photographer, Lori Grimmett. I became a sponge and wanted to learn as much as I could about photography, Michelle said. In this particular class, Michelle learned about a type of lens she could use on her camera called a Macro lens. I purchased a dedicated Macro lens after her class and it opened up a whole new world for me. During a lunch break at a Photo Weekend course with the Rocky Mountain School of Photography, I stopped at a cemetery and found a beautiful Rhododendron. I put on the Macro lens and took one photo of the pink flowers. It hit me like a ton of bricks when I looked at what I took. Thats when I saw the flower as a form of art. Michelle started her own website, where her prints can be purchased, though she does not consider herself a professional, I decided to start a website and Facebook page. Its a start for me and I still have so much to learn about photography! Even though I do sell my photographs on my website, I do not consider myself as a Professional. Im far from it in my opinion, Michelle modestly explained. When asked about her favorite subject to photograph she explained that she never set out to produce one specific subject, the more I explored, the more I realized what I liked and started to fall in love with. Of course flowers are something that I love, but I also enjoy taking photos of tombstones and statues at cemeteries. Being in the Pacific Northwest, there are so many places to hike; finding waterfalls, mushrooms, lichen, wildflowers, maybe a snake as well. One thing that has intrigued me is finding abandoned homes, buildings, barns, etc. Some people look at abandoned buildings as junk, which dont get me wrong, it could be junk! I look at the beauty of the decaying wood or maybe the old television that was left behind. Before relocating to Oregon in 2003, Michelle lived in a suburb of Chicago and was a Police Records Specialist. Her husband has been a LEO for 15 years and currently is assigned to the Domestic Violence Unit with his department. Together they have an 8 year old daughter and thriving pianist.

A K9 LOVE STORY
A baby is crying in the background as two dogs bark out the window as Cpl. Ober and K-9 Ary walk up the front steps coming home after a long shift. Dinner has been enjoyed, lunches and work clothes are ready for the next day, and baby and all three furbabies are sound asleeping as K9 mom reminisces on how it all began . . . Flowers were blooming everywhere through the crisp spring Delaware air as Brandi shut the car door making her way into just another day on the job with the Delaware State Police. Being a Senior Telecommunications Specialist and dealing with 911 operations and dispatching had not been an easy job the past 3 years, but hey someone has to do it right? Little did Brandi know, her day would be one of the busiest days she had in a while. Great, she thought, one of the new Field Training Officers was out training a new officer and has to call in ALL of their traffic stops. After about the fifth call, Brandi started noticing his cute redneck type voice and wondered what this mysterious FTO voice looked like anyway. Over the next several days she found herself excited to go into work and get to talk with this Dagsboro Police Officer. Eventually through email Brandi and David swapped numbers and began chit chatting outside of work. Brandi couldnt get over how much they were able to talk to each other. Spring came and went and it was summer in Delaware. The warm air and summer fun filled the air and they were still just talking about life as summer came to a close.

26

Fall 2008 would be the year of the 50th Grammy Awards Ceremony when Amy Winehouse would win for her song Rehab, the year the first AfricanAmerican in United States history was elected as President, the year the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5 of the World Series to become champions of Major League Baseball, and the year David asked Brandi on their first date. It was October 08, 2008. Brandi could remember it vividly as that morning the monotony of going into work was interrupted with her beaming smile. Afternoon rolled around and a bouquet of flowers arrived at her desk as if to remind her of their date . . . like she forgot! Apparently he is dead set on making a good impression, Brandi thought to herself. That night dinner was full of laughter and smiles and that restaurant soon became Brandis favorite restaurant. David shared that he had graduated the police academy in 2006, just one year before Brandi had started her dispatching job. They shared stories of things on the job and found it just as easy to relate to each other in person as they had over the

The first date night jitters were over and let the fun begin! October weather being close enough to the beach leaves plenty of time for happy hour people watching. As if just hanging out with each other wasnt enough, enjoying those signature beach cocktails and making up silly stories as people walked by really made Brandi and David feel like kids again and took away the pressure of the stressful work calls they encountered the night before. It soon became cold and the holiday seasons were busy with the hustle and bustle of shopping and families, but what could make it fun once the holiday meas were over, the Christmas lights were taken down, and everything was just dead and cold outside?! Ride-a-long date nights! How cool was it for Brandi to see the other side of operations. Not to mention the ride in the police car itself and getting to turn on the lights and sirens. Sure maybe David thought it was just another thing to do during the workday, but not everyone gets the privilege of doing that!

Next thing Brandi knew, she blinked and April showers were over and it had been a year since her and David went on their first date. One bright sunny day, David and Brandi were on another long shift . . . or so Brandi thought. Brandi had been taking calls as usual when she got a call from David. She could tell this wasnt an ordinary call and all of a sudden, Brandi figured out David wasnt working, but was outside the building waiting for her when he asked Brandi to be his forever bride over the radio so everyone could hear. Lucky for David, Brandi said yes.
They wasted no time starting their life together by moving into an apartment and welcoming Samson, their now four year old German Shepherd into their family. As they started their life together, a traumatic event changed their lives. One of Brandis police officer friend lost a life in the line of duty. Brandi was distraught and found Wives Behind the Badge to help cope her through the emotional toll. The sisterhood she felt with the advice from other significant others who had experienced the same thing meant so much to her and she knew she had to be involved. Brandi wanted to repay the kindness that was shown to her by paying it forward and is thankful today for her position as forum moderator.

Man, Brandi thought, Mom, Wife, WBTB Volunteer, K9 Mom, Dispatcher and Mom to three furbabies, I sure am busy these days! Thats right, Samson was only the first of their journey as parents. Brandi and Davids romantic Autumn wedding was two years later on the exact day of the first date, October 08, 2010. By Thanksgiving, Samson had a new Rottweiler sister, Delilah. Dinner, drinks and puppy drool were enough to keep them both content with life until David got the call officially granting him the role as new K-9 officer of Dagsboro Police Department and Samson and Delilah couldnt be more excited to have another puppy to play with! At first they were nervous about this new role. What would it bring to their family? How would things change? Good thing Brandi had WBTB to turn to for suggestions from other K9 families! Sure enough K9 Ary changed their family. Brandi and Davids hearts were touched immediately with this dogs fun-loving personality with the ability to focus and get the job done, Brandi remembered. He has always been an amazing tracker and loves to do his work. David always thanks Custom Canine Unlimited of Maysville, GA (http://www.customcanineunlimited.com) for training Ary well to be a perfect match for him and his growing family.

Yupp, you guessed it! Brandi could still remember that day in July 2012 when David was preparing to be a new K9 handler with his partner Ary when Samson and Delilah learned they would all be big siblings to their new baby sister! Brandi and David were expecting and couldnt be happier. Enjoying happy hour on the beach that year was at a halt, but hey who says you cant enjoy people watching any time!? Ary officially became an Ober December 2012 and before they knew it, they were saying Happy Birthday to their beautiful daughter Marley in March of 2013. These days the seasons whisk by even faster and 2014 with K-9 training, shift work, and Samson, Delilah and Marley, David and Brandi might not get date nights as often as theyd like but they wouldnt trade their life for the world. Shift work allows date nights to be planned in advance, although some months they have many less nights than others. Busy or not, romance to keep their bond behind the badge is a necessity to remind Brandi and David -- all of this is because two people fell in love.
Today Cpl. David Ober has been serving the Dagsboro Police Department for 8 years and Brandi has been working as a Delaware State Police dispatcher for 9 years. Their eight month old daughter Marley and their dogs, Samson, Delilah, and K9 Ary couldn t be happier that mom and dad love each other more with every day, and they promise they will behave on their parents upcoming weekend getaway!
