Fo or those who o are not fam miliar with th he term, a GP PA is your g grade point average e, which show ws your aver rage perform mance in all of your cour rses based on n your grades. In the U.S., GPAs are calculated on n a 4.0 scale, , but most un niversities in n Brazil B use a 10.0 1 grading scale. It is fine to use y your Brazilia an institution ns grading s scale, bu ut it must be e clearly note ed what the scale is (5.0 , 10.0, etc.). Your grade es should be marked m as w weighted if your y school uses a curve e when gradi ing (where t the student w with th he highest gr rade is given n a 100, and all other students grade es are increased by the sa ame am mount). Your grades sh hould be mar rked as unw weighted if your school does not ch hange gr rades from what w is score ed by each st tudent. **While we understand u th hat not every y institution tracks class s rank or high hest GPA in n lass, it is imp portant for your y advisor to be able to o provide a b brief stateme ent about your cl ac cademic per rformance if these numbe ers are not tr racked by yo our institutio on in Brazil. Since Brazil and a the U.S. have differe ent approach hes to gradin ng, showing where your GPA fi its with the overall o GPA for other stu udents study ying the sam me subject at t hool the same sch ca an be extrem mely helpful for U.S. inst titutions whe en reviewing g your applic cation. Mos st Brazilian B stud dents will ha ave lower GP PAs than U.S S. students b because of th he difference e in how grading is handled. For exam mple, one institution was s requested by b over 500 students this past year, b but only acc cepts 10 0 students ea ach cohort. There are over 200 0 U.S. institu utions curren ntly hosting students thr rough the program, so s try to be clear c about w why you thin nk a given in nstitution is t the ght one for you. y rig If you wish to be placed at the same in nstitution as another stud dent, you sho ould bo oth research your preferr red institutio ons thorough hly and make e strong case es for wh hy you shou uld be placed d at those sch hools.
