What are different types of diode?

A diode is a two terminal device having two active electrodes between which it allows the transfer of current in one direction only . diodes are known for their unidirectional current property wher in the electric current is allowed to flow in one direction basically diodes are used for the purpose rectifying waveform and can be used within power supplies or within radio detectors.

Types odf diodes Light emitting diode It is one of the most popular type of diodes and when this diode permiyts the transfer of electric current between the electrodes light is produced in most of the diodes the light infrared cannot be seen ad they are at frequencies that do not permit visibility when diode is switched on or forward biased the electrons recombine with the holes and releases energy in the form of light . the colour of lights depends on the enegy gap of the semi conductor. Avalanche diode This type of diode operatews in the reverse bias and used avalanche effects for its operation . the avalanche ebreak down takes place across the entire PN junctionwhen the voltage drop is constant and is independent of current . generally the avalanche diode is use for photodetection where high levels of sensitivity can be obtained by the avalanche process. Photo diode Photo diodes are used to detect light. These diodes operate in reverse biased . the light can be it detected with ease. Small amount of current is flow through it . it also can be used to generate electricity used as solar cells. Zener diode This type of dioide provides a stable refrence voltage thus is very useful type and is udsed in vast quantities. The diode runs in reverse bias and break downs on arrival of a certain voltage. A stable voltage is produced if current through the resistance is limited in power supplies these diodes are widely used to provide a refrence voltage. Rectifier diode This type of diodes are used to rectify alternating power inputs in power supplies they can rectify current levels that range from an amplitude upwards. If low voltage drops are required then schottky diodes are used

Schottky diodes This type of diodes feature a reverse bias placed upon it which varies the width of the depletion region layer as per the voltage placed across the diode. By alternating the bias on the diode the width of the depletion region changes there by varying the capacitance. Laser diode This type of diode is different from the LED type as it produces coherent light . these diodes find their application in dvd and cd drives laser pointer tc laser diodes are used more expensively than LED . they are cheaper than other forms of laser generators moreover these laser diodesd have limited life

Varactor diode This type of diode feature a reverse bias also. Varie sits depletion region as per the voltage placed across the diode this diode acts as a capacitor and capacitor placed are formed by the extent of conduction regions and depletion region as the insulating dielectric . by altering the bias on the diode the width of depletion region region changes there by varying the capacitance.

How you justify diode is non linear device? Devices for which voltage current plot is astraight line are called linear devices. In case od diode the current voltage plot is not a straight line in case of forward biased when the positive terminal of battery is applied to p type region and negative terminal to n type region the current voltage plot is not a straight line and the applied voltage across the diode current remains constant then increases rapidly. In case of reverse biases the phenomena is same bit in opposite direction the current increases along ve y-axis at the point where junction breaks.

Discuss the behavior of the forward and reverse biased in the light of its characteristics equation? The characteristics equation for reverse biased and the forward biased is Id=lo[exp(Vd/Vt)-1]

Where

Id = current through diode Lo = reverse current Vd = voltage across the diode terminals Vt = thermal voltage

Exponential nature of equation shows that the current will increase sharply when the Vd is greater than the Vo. If we continue to increase the voltage Vd a stage will come when the diode will burn out and current will increase sharply to maximum value.
