Inference

Image distance depends on the object distance.

Hypothesis

The further the object distance, the smaller the image distance.

Aim

To investigate the relationship between the object distance(u), image distance(v), and focal length(f) of a lens.

Manipulated Variable Responding Variable Fixed Variable

The object distance, u The image distance, v Focal length

List of Apparatus and Materials Convex lens, light bulb, batery, crocodile clips, lens holder, metre rule, white screen.

Arrangement

Procedures

1) 2)

The experiment is set up as shown in the diagram above. The light bulb is placed at a distance of 15cm(u=15cm) from the optical centre of the lens. The screen is the moved forward and backward until a sharp image is formed on it.

3)

The distance from the optical centre of the lens (image distance, v) is measured and recorded. The experiment is repeated for object distance, u=20cm, 25cm, 30cm, 35cm.

4) All the corresponding values of the image distance, v are measure and recorded

Conclusion

The image is inverted, diminished and real.

Precaution The metre rule must be parallel to the eyes when taking the reading to avoid parallax error.

Gradient

y= -0.7922x + 0.0995
