As companies continue to employ the latest tools of IT to refine their business processes, several fields have a demand for talented individuals with a management information systems background, including marketing, sales, finance, production, and accounting. Academic Evaluation
Academic Evaluation

All courses are conducted and evaluated in a continuous & internal manner by the faculty who teach these courses. The student registers for a certain number of courses each semester; the year being divided into two semesters, and a summer term, whenever offered. A faculty member, as registration advisor, helps a student to draw up his programme, suitable to his pace and needs, which is made possible by the course-wise time-table of the Institute. It is the responsibility of the student to attend classes regularly and to maintain the required level of scholastic standing (Please refer to the Attendance Charter). Assessment The performance of a student in each course is assessed by the teacher by means of continuous evaluation throughout the semester in class work, periodical quizzes, tests (sometimes unannounced), tutorials, home work, projects, etc. and a comprehensive examination at the end of the semester. The student is thereby given a large number of opportunities to prove himself and be evaluated. The system encourages and rewards continuous and systematic study. It provides constant feedback to the student as to where he stands, thus enabling him to cultivate regular habits of studying / learning and preparing himself for the future. Unusual methods of evaluation have been evolved in the Practice School courses to take account of certain traits which do not surface in classroom education, like professional judgement, decision-making ability, interdisciplinary approach, initiative, leadership, sense of responsibility, etc. Grading The system discards the conventional emphasis on a single final examination and numerical marks as the only absolute indication of the quality of a student's performance. Thus, at the end of the semester the teacher of the course awards letter grades A, B, C, F to the student based on the total performance of the student and it is relative to the performance of others taking the same course. These letter grades stand for quality performance : A-Excellent, B-Good, C-Fair and F- Fail. Further, these letter grades have points associated with them in a quantified hierarchy. There are also courses in which the teacher awards non-letter grades which have only a qualitative hierarchy. The teacher may also pronounce the performance of a student in a course in terms of certain reports which should not be misconstrued as grades. The Institute, being fully residential with an internal and continuous evaluation system, expects every student to be responsible for regular attendance in classrooms, to appear in scheduled tests and examinations and to fulfil all other tasks assigned to him in every course. The system has adequate resilience to accommodate unforeseen situations through withdrawal from a course, mock-up tests, feedback from examinations and interaction with teachers. When, in spite of all these facilities, a student fails to co-operate with the teacher in the discharge of his part of the contract to such an extent that the teacher is unable to award any grade, the teacher is authorized to give a F (FAIL) report. A student is deemed to have cleared a course if he obtains a grade in the course. However the educational philosophy of the Institute interlinks and at the same time distinguishes between the performance of a student in a single course and his overall cumulative performance. The overall performance of a student is indicated by an index known as the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). It is the weighted average of the grade points of all the letter grades received by the student since his entry into the Institute and is expressed on a 10-point scale.

During the student's stay in the Institute, the Institute expects him to show certain minimum performance and progress. The minimum academic requirement is regarding the performance and progress for the Integrated programme is :
? A CGPA of at least 4.5 at the end of every semester. ? Not more than one C grade in a semester is allowed for integrated programmes.

Students who fail to meet the minimum academic requirements stipulated above are put under an appropriate committee which monitors their programmes and gives guidance so that they are properly rehabilitated at the earliest. This is done by Academic Counseling Board (ACB) which is appointed by the Senate and is given authority to take appropriate action including discontinuance of the student.

Academic Conduct
Unauthorized Material

Academic Conduct

We take all academic misconduct extremely seriously and investigate all alleged offences of cheating in assessed work and examinations. Students suspected of misconduct are dealt with accordingly through the Academy's Student Discipline Procedures. Academic misconduct during examinations includes:

The act of bringing unauthorized material (written, printed or in any other format) into the examination room; communicating with, receiving assistance from, copying from or providing assistance to another candidate during an examination; removing examination books or worksheets from the examination room. If the Institute finds a student to be in breach of discipline by having cheated in assessed work and/or examinations, it has the discretion to apply a range of penalties, ranging from nullification of module results up to suspension or expulsion from the Institute. The standard penalty applied is to make null and void all assessments undertaken during the relevant semester. We understand that students may not be fully aware of the issues surrounding academic misconduct. It is therefore important that students inform themselves of these issues and seek the advice of staff faculty support service as soon as any problems arise. The consequences of misconduct in examinations and all other forms of assessment are severe and may result in all assessments undertaken at the relevant subject being made null and void. Copying Copying the work of others, including that of other students in the class or group, is an indication of unfair means whereby one person gains credit for the work undertaken by another. Where an element of reproduction is a desirable element of an assessment, as might be the case in a group project or presentation, the instructions for the assessed work will specify the extent to which such reproduction is permissible. The extent of legitimate reproduction must be acknowledged by a student within their work. Students are advised to check the rest of their work to ensure that it is their own. Working with other students in informal study groups is a desirable part of the academic experience but students must ensure that the work that is finally submitted is theirs and not that of anyone else. Students should keep copies of material such as working notes, or sketches of diagrams or drafts of essays that show that the work and its source has been acknowledged and identified. Plagiarism As the consequences of misconduct in examinations and all other forms of assessment are severe, the Student Guide to Plagiarism can be found at the end of Part B, prior to the Appendices. Note on Detection of Plagiarism College may require 'student work' to be submitted for checking using plagiarism detection software. This is intended to assist students in identifying possible plagiarism in course work submitted for assessment which could otherwise result in disciplinary action against students. Collusion Collusion involves an agreement to deceive. This means that more than one person is involved in the deception. An accusation of collusion may be added to an accusation of copying if there is clear evidence of the involvement of each party. Students should be extremely careful about lending their completed work to other persons. Students may think that they are helping others to meet a deadline in lending their work to others but it may result in problems if other students copy a student's work without informing them. What starts out as a supportive action may carry the risk of an accusation of collusion. Examination Rules and Regulations Passing in all the examinations is a must. Any student having backlog (s) will not be allowed to appear for campus placement facility as the companies don't want to consider students with backlogs. Students, having any backlog, should appear in the examination being held for the juniors, to clear the same. The management is seriously considering a proposal to classify the students according to their marks and allow them to appear before selected companies according to their standards, as exhibited by their performance, for campus placements. 23

Understanding the basics

Its a fact. When a company gives students the opportunity to apply classroom concepts to real business solutions, students gain a greater understanding of business dynamics.
Weekly Business Quizzes At FMS we understand the need of designing and implementing such a curriculum which would bridge the gap between theoretical learning and industry requirements. Therefore as a part of student development programme we have tied up with the Xed Intellect, an innovative online learning solution provider to enhance students learning and performance, and thereby creating areas of excellence. Online Business Quizzes We intend to conduct weekly/fortnightly compulsory business quizzes based on current business awareness. It will help students in application of current business situations in their classroom teaching, assignments and projects. Compulsorily each student has to secure a minimum of 60% marks in these quizzes. At the time of final academic evaluation 5% of bonus marks will be awarded to all those who secure more than 60% marks in all the quizzes. Objective of Bizquiz Inculcate a reading habit of business newspapers among students to sharpen their business acumen. Why Current Business Awareness? Students undergoing a rigorous 2-year MBA Program, spend majority of the time in classroom training, assignments and projects. In the spare time, they are generally engaged in extra-curricular activities. Therefore, students rarely get time to update themselves on day to day business news. Moreover, Indian education system (primary, secondary and graduation) is designed in such a way, that nowhere students develop a habit of reading business newspapers. However, being daily updated about business affairs is a requirement of every job and unless students develop this habit, they will struggle to outstandingly perform in their respective careers. Salient Features of Bizquiz Weekly / Fortnightly Business Awareness Quiz throughout the year News covered from leading business newspapers like Economic Times, Business Standard, DNA Money, Financial Express, Wall Street Journal etc. News coverage from all business categories like Economy, Corporate, Sports, Entertainment, Lifestyle and People with special emphasis on reasoning based news. Domain (Functional Subject) Quizzes As a part of continuous evaluation process students will also be judged on the basis of their functional (Finance, HR, Marketing, Operations, IT & International Business) knowledge base. Through Online Assessment System (OAS) we will evaluate each student as how much he/she has learnt the subject in detail and do they have clear understanding about subject fundamentals. Securing 70% marks in the functional subjects is a must. At the time of final academic evaluation 5% of bonus marks will be awarded to all those who secure more than 60% marks in all the functional quizzes.

Benefits include
Continuous Evaluation of students rather than one end term examination Changeover from Rote Learning to Conceptual Understanding. Instantaneous Performance Reports help in analyzing weak areas of students and take corrective action immediately. On-time declaration of results. Eliminate biasness in checking Reduces overhead of setting and evaluating questions. Faculty will have more time for teaching, research and consultancy. 28

Strive for perfection in everything that we do... ...take the best and then try to make it even better. " At FMS Pune we consider outdoor activities are integral part of management and managerial development.

All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think we become. - Buddha

The Technique Vipassana, which means to see things as they really are, is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation. It was rediscovered by Gautam Buddha more than 2500 years ago and was taught by him as a universal remedy for universal ills. This non-sectarian technique aims for the total eradication of mental impurities and the resultant highest happiness of full liberation. Healing, not merely the curing of diseases, but the essential healing of human suffering, is its purpose. Vipassana is a way of self-transformation through self-observation. It focuses on the deep interconnection between mind and body, which can be experienced directly by disciplined attention to the physical sensations that form the life of the body, and that continuously interconnect and condition the life of the mind. It is this observation-based, self-exploratory journey to the common root of mind and body that dissolves mental impurity, resulting in a balanced mind full of love and compassion. The scientific laws that operate one's thoughts, feelings, judgements and sensations become clear. Through direct experience, the nature of how one grows or regresses, how one produces suffering or frees oneself from suffering is understood. Life becomes characterized by increased awareness, non-delusion, self-control and peace. The Tradition Since the time of Buddha, Vipassana has been handed down, to the present day, by an unbroken chain of teachers. Although Indian by descent, the current teacher in this chain, Mr. S.N. Goenka, was born and raised in Burma (Myanmar). While living there he had the good fortune to learn Vipassana from his teacher, Sayagyi U Ba Khin who was at the time a high Government official. After receiving training from his teacher for fourteen years, Mr. Goenka settled in India and began teaching Vipassana in 1969. Since then he has taught tens of thousands of people of all races and all religions in both the East and West. In 1982 he began to appoint assistant teachers to help him meet the growing demand for Vipassana courses. The Courses The technique is taught at ten-day residential courses during which participants follow a prescribed Code of Discipline, learn the basics of the method, and practice sufficiently to experience its beneficial results. The course requires hard, serious work. There are three steps to the training. The first step is, for the period of the course, to abstain from killing, stealing, sexual activity, speaking falsely, and intoxicants. This simple code of moral conduct serves to calm the mind, which otherwise would be too agitated to perform the task of self-observation. The next step is to develop some mastery over the mind by learning to fix one's attention on the natural reality of the ever changing flow of breath as it enters and leaves the nostrils. By the fourth day the mind is calmer and more focussed, better able to undertake the practice of Vipassana itself: observing sensations throughout the body, understanding their nature, and developing equanimity by learning not to react to them. Finally, on the last full day participants learn the meditation of loving kindness or goodwill towards all, in which the purity developed during the course is shared with all beings. The results come gradually through continued practice. It is unrealistic to expect all problems to be solved in ten days. Within that time, however, the essentials of Vipassana can be learned so that it can be applied in daily life. The more the technique is practised, the greater the freedom from misery, and the closer the approach to the ultimate goal of full liberation. Even ten days can provide results which are vivid and obviously beneficial in everyday life. The entire practice is actually a mental training. Just as we use physical exercises to improve our bodily health, Vipassana can be used to develop a healthy mind. Because it has been found to be genuinely helpful, great emphasis is put on preserving the technique in its original, authentic form. The course is compulsory for all the students studying at FMS- Pune without any exceptions whatsoever. Students with psychological disorders and those who feel can not be a part of team should refrain taking admission in our college. All those who try it will find Vipassana to be an invaluable tool with which to achieve and share real happiness with others. 31

We plan to hold our training /classes for 365 days in a year .We are also likely to hold periodic examinations from 0800 Hrs. to 2300 Hrs. at least once in a week. We DO NOT believe in the concept of holidays. Because industry does not function on clock basis, the Manager is required to function round the clock. It should be noted that we are more of a training establishment than a conventional management institute. Each and every class is critical for continuous learning. Therefore NO request on medical grounds for exemption from attendance will be accepted. A Full - Time course Student should have no work except attending the classes. They can not and should not have any other priority or occupation. It is a costly course, which the parents have paid with a lot of pain and expectation. A good student should therefore attend 100% classes. However assuming that some students may have some genuine problems, a minimum of 80% of attendance is compulsory per semester. Those students who have 80% of attendance are considered as 'Average' students by us and are not fielded for campus placements in the initial phase of our campus placement. The approach here is that these are the weaker lot of our batch as they have not received the full training because of their absence from classes. Students should maintain 90% attendance and above in the interest of their growth and development. Very Senior Faculty are teaching in our Institute. It must be noted the stress on attendance is directly linked to learning and equipping to become successful managers. Attending classes regularly is in itself a big mind conditioning exercise. This shows students' commitment towards building their corporate career. Therefore, we feel that there is a need to treat and reward different kinds of students with different percentages of attendance differently as under: a) Those who maintain 95% and above of the attendance will be awarded an attendance incentive marks which shall be 5% per subject per semester. The attendance will be calculated per semester. b) Only those with 90% and above of attendance for the three consecutive semesters may be allowed to sit for the first 10 Companies. It should be noted that it is not a punitive action; however, it is a way to reward students with high attendance. c) Those who fail to maintain 80% of attendance in each semester will be placed in a RED LIST which means they may not be allowed to appear in the examination and avail the campus placement facility. No reason, including proven medical certification, will be accepted as the student would have missed the learning /grooming process. This can't be made up if a student remains absent from class beyond permissible limits . Please note that we are a professional Institute and you will be going through professional training without which one can't survive in the industry. It is just not a matter of academics and passing the examinations. It is a matter of acquiring relevant skills, competence, knowledge and attitude required to become a successful manager. It should also be noted that there is a difference between a Full Time regular course and a Distance Learning programme. Students with lesser percentages of attendance cannot be a part of any full time programme. d) No one, including the Director, is empowered to grant attendance on medical ground or on any other ground, as one who is not physically present or involved in academic activity can't be marked PRESENT in the class as it will be illegal. Only those who are present in the class or involved in academic activity under the directions of the Dean/Director will get attendance. However, any one having any medical problem should promptly avail medical assistance and those who have urgent family commitments can also visit their family. We, as an Institute, cannot restrict the movement of the Students. However, WE DON'T HAVE ANY SYSTEM OF LEAVE WITH ATTENDANCE ! Now it is up to you where you want to stand. You have the choice to obtain any kind of percentage of attendance and to avail the advantages or disadvantages. Having categorically stated the portion well before your admission we will be unable to entertain any request from you on the matter at a later date. You should, therefore, aim at 100% attendance and not 80% attendance. Please note you do have a choice not to accept the offer of admission. However, this should not disturb you as the permissible limit of absence is 20% in each semester and if one calculates the total days on which one can legitimately be absent from the classes on account of sickness or other contingencies it will be more than 20 days in a year, provided they attend classes regularly from day one. Absenting from classes for casual reasons or due to carelessness cannot be justified at all. Students are, therefore advised to save attendance, as one saves money, so that a certain portion can be spent as and when needed, painlessly on medical ground.

Discipline Conduct

Discipline is an integral part of FMS culture. Students are trained for bright future careers through various scientific grooming processes. Strict discipline is an essential part of the training process and defaulters will be dealt with, appropriately. Student managers are expected to follow the norms of Discipline and Academic Conduct. 1. Wearing of crash helmets by those riding two wheelers and by pillion riders is compulsory. Those who violate this for the first time will be fined ` 500/- which will go to 'Students Co-curricular Activities Fund' and more stringent punishment will be awarded for subsequent violations. 2. Carrying of mobile phones to academic block / classes and library is strictly prohibited. Those mobiles which are found inside the academic block and library will be confiscated and will be returned to the students on completion of the course. Parents wanting to talk to their children are advised to call them during night hours, (that is, after the class hours but before 10 pm). No mobiles will be used in the hostel after 10 pm. 3. Students staying in the hostel are expected to be in their rooms by 09:30 pm. Late night parties or loitering around at odd hours, on any account, either inside the Campus or outside is not allowed. Similarly, boys and girls moving into each others' hostel will entail expulsion from the institute. 4. Students are expected to be inside the classrooms well before the commencement of the class in formals. Those who reach for the class late will not be allowed to enter the class. Similarly, after entering the class they are not allowed to leave the class till the session gets over. However, in case of contingencies such as medical grounds, the student concerned is expected to inform the faculty before leaving the academic block. Taking permission from the faculty taking the class itself is not sufficient. In case any student leaves the class after giving attendance without permission from the faculty in charge, he/she will be dealt with disciplinary action. Students staying in the hostel can leave the hostel for medical treatment any time with a roommate with prior permission from the Rector, Cluster Friend and Friend of the Floor. The ambulance, kept 'standby', can be used for all emergencies. 5. Students are not expected to loiter around the corridor in between classes. 6. Students are expected to behave well like gentlemen and ladies not only in the classrooms, but also throughout their stay with us, even when they are in their private rooms. We demand a decent life style and good habits to promote good behaviour and a positive outlook towards life. 7. Boys are expected to be clean shaven every day except those who grow beard on religious grounds. Side locks should be kept trimmed and short. You are not allowed to sport a long and trendy hair style. Girls are expected to tie their hair neatly. 8. Student Managers are expected to use the stair case in the academic blocks and not the elevators. 9. Student Managers are expected to address their seniors as 'Sir' and 'Ma'am' respectively. 10. Students are expected to relax and sleep in the night at least from 12 to 5 am. They are supposed to study before 12 at night and after 5 am in the morning, which is sufficient to maintain an excellent academic record, as learning is a continuous process and should be under taken regularly. Laptops should also be switched off after 12 at night. Sound sleep promotes sound health and that helps to pay proper attention in the classes. 11. If any student from the hostel has to be away from his / her room or to go out of station for any personal reason, he / she should 47

take permission to do so from the Director/ Rector. Please note that students are not allowed to go and stay out with anyone. Nomination of the local guardian, if any, should be made by parents through a letter to be addressed to the Director before 1st July 2011. Permission for night-outs will not be granted to hostelites. However, in case the parents or own brother/ sister visits Pune and wants to take the student child to stay with them for a day or two, they can do so. However, for that too permission should be sought at least one week in advance through a fax followed by a personal call to the Director / Deputy Director. The Director in turn will inquire from the student and may or may not recommend the 'Night out Pass' to the Rector of the Hostels. Verbal request from the students on this account will not be entertained. These are measures to ensure safety and security of the students. No gifts/ presents of any kind are to be given to Director(s)/Faculty / Staff for any reason whatsoever. We are doing our duty and, personally, we don't expect any gratification. If any kind of gratitude is to be expressed, it should be done by presentation of a book on management science to the college library. At best, one 'thank you card' can be given. Above all, if you remember us as an alumni, that is more than sufficient. Students might bring their two wheelers for the purpose of corporate visits. Hostel rooms are expected to be kept clean by the occupiers. The maids are at service for cleaning the toilets and the corridors ONLY. Students are supposed to switch off lights and fans completely when they are not in the room and ensure that water taps are also closed. In case the lights and fans are not switched off, a fine of ` 1,000/- will be imposed. They should keep their belongings in the almirah and keep the keys with them. Management will not be responsible for the loss of any valuables or cash. Students are advised not to keep any valuable ornaments. Silence Hours' will be maintained strictly after 10:00 pm in the hostel. All the students of the hostel should get into the rooms and maintain even inside the rooms silence hours. The privacy of each roommate should be respected. No music or movies during 'silence hours' is permitted. Defaulters will be fined heavily. Ragging of any kind is strictly prohibited. Any one indulging in ragging will be dealt with 'Zero Tolerance' and will be expelled as this has been prescribed as a minimum punishment by the Supreme Court of India. The Supreme Court has also categorically mentioned that students who harass freshers physically or mentally will be booked by the police, expelled from the college and also denied future admissions. Therefore, no one should allow others to rag them. If anyone tries to rag any student the same should be reported immediately to the Director. The industry at times asks us for references and opinion about the behaviour, conduct, integrity and suitability of the alumni for specific jobs/ placements. They expect us to field the candidates with right attitude and attributes alone. Traditionally the Dean/ Director of the institute is a reference point. We are also required to sign testimonials whenever a student wants to go for higher studies abroad. As time passes we have found it difficult to recollect the attributes of the individual students. Therefore, it has been decided that we will suitably add a column in the Post Graduate Diploma of each student to state his/her 'Character and Leadership Qualities' assessed by the institute and record our opinion. The grading will be Exemplary / Very Good / Good / Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory. The duplicate copy of the diploma will be a reference point for us in the future. We are sure that our students will behave in a mature manner exhibiting positive attributes and leadership qualities, contributing to their growth and development and enabling us to give the highest grading.

Dress Code Both Boys & Girls are required to be dressed formally during their stay with FMS- PUNE. As a guideline, the students are requested to observe the dress code as under:Boys Black Trousers, Full Sleeve Plain Shirt with Tie and Black Leather Shoes (jeans are not permitted) Girls Light colour sarees and blouse (with sleeves) Students are advised to carry enough sarees (preferably light colour) especially for the first 15 days. The formal dress is Salwar Kameez (knee length). All Students Jeans, T-Shirts, Casuals and Chappals are not allowed on the academic premises. The same will attract a fine of ` 600/Periodic Reports to Parents The Institute will furnish a Performance report on each student to all the parents periodically. A monthly attendance report on each student will also be forwarded by the Director. We insist on regular attendance of students in classes, workshops, seminars and other co-curricular activities. 'Get - togethers' and cultural programmes will be organised by the students' council, but will be subject to disciplinary rules. Welcome ! 48
