The New BJMP Logo: Its Symbolism The organizational name (BJMP) in bold letters symbolizes strong identity

of BJMP; Round Borders stand for holism; Justice Scale for the rule of Law; Five Pillars represent the coordination among the pillars of the Criminal Justice System; Philippine map depicts the corrections is a national concern; Sixteen laurel leaves stand for 16 Regions; Safekeeping and Development indicate the mandate of the Bureau; Jail Officer signifies the importance of his presence and professionalism; Inmate in Black and White symbolizes that the inmate is undergoing Developmental processes; The Bars speak of custody, security and control of inmates; the Red and Blue background stand for the primary colors of the PHILIPPINE FLAG; The Gray background depicts the organizations (BJMP) color; And the lights to Dark yellow background represent the transcending light of Corrections

GENERAL PROVISIONS Republic Act No. 6975, otherwise known as the Department of Interior and Local Government Act of 1990, provided that the task of jail management and Penology(BJMP). Based on this mandate, the BJMP defined its vision, mission, powers, functions, values, objectives and principles as an institution, in a consultative and participatory strategic planning session. Subsequently, republic Act No. 9263, alsoknown as the Bureau of fire protection and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology Professionalization Act of 2004 and its Implementing Rules and Regulations strengthened the provisions of RA 6975, redefined many of the BJMPs existing policies and restructured the Bureaus organization. Section 1. Mandate- the Bureau of jail Management and Penology was createdon January 2, 1991 pursuant to Republic Act 6975, replacing its forerunner, theOffice of Jail Management and Penology of the defunct PhilippineConstabulary/Integrated National Police. The BJMP has Jurisdiction over alldistrict, city and municipal jails. It is a line bureau of the Department of the Interiorand Local Government (DILG). As such, it shall ensure the establishment of secured, clean, adequately equipped and sanitary facilities and provision of qualityservices for the custody, safekeeping and development of district, city and municipalinmates, and fugitive from justice, or person detained, awaiting or undergoinginvestigation or trial and/ or transfer to the National Penitentiary, and/or violentmentally ill person who endangers him/herself or the safety of others as certified bythe proper medical or health officer, pending transfer to a mental institution.
