My Dear People:
Today is Catholic Charities follow-up Sunday.
If you have not turned in your Catholic
Charities pledge card, please find one in the
pew, sign it, if you will, and drop it in the
collection or send it to the office.
Today is also Pro-Life Sunday and once
again we are made aware that we must
continue to pray and work to end the 3500
abortions performed daily in this country. I
am afraid the good Lord will discontinue the
blessings on this country unless we change
this course.
Someone once complained that the Church
needs to condemn pre marital sex as loudly
as she condemns abortion. The Church
speaks against abortion; but we need to
condemn more than we do the reasons
behind the “situations” which put women in
this quandary and in which they easily
misguide themselves into the wrong solution
necessitated by the premarital sex.
For three summers in Washington, D.C., in
the 1960s, I was a chaplain at an orphanage
and home for unwed mothers. This was
before Roe v. Wade, and I witnessed many
adoptions from this orphanage. Surely the
unwed mother pays a great price for the
pregnancy, and delivery; but the price of an
abortion is so much higher.
Catholic Family Services arranges all kinds
of details for the new adopting parents. The
unwed mother today has no financial
problems. Catholic Family Services and
especially the adopting parents are ready to
help with the finances.
We baptized an adopted baby only a week
ago; Jill and Melvin Upchurch are super
parents and will give that baby as much love
and faith any parent can possibly give a
child.
The Jesuit magazine America has published
American Bishops on teaching high
schoolers religion. Admittedly, teaching
religion to teenagers is a gargantuan task
today because of the secularist philosophy
thrown at them through the media and the
environment in which we live. Some say the
FRAMEWORK, as the document is called, is
too academic without the existential flavor
needed for teenage pedagogy. Others say it
is a document, and the teachers and parents
must relate and apply the doctrines and
theories to the existing circumstances of the
teenager’s everyday life. I see many aspects
of this application, but I point out one that is
most effective. This is bringing the students
to the Eucharist, where they kneel before our
Lord and receive His graces, and they
express their faith in the most existential way.
That aspect is first class catechesis. This we
do at OLS School and in our PSR religion
classes, with a temporary chapel in the gym
building and the visits to the church and
Chapel of Our Savior.
Not just the young but we adults look for role
models as we strive to live the faith. I have
always been struck by the complete giving of
one’s life as we see in the person of Damien
of Molokai. Born in 1840 in Belgium and
ordained while the civil war was taking place
in this country, he was readied for the
missions in the Kingdom of Hawaii. After four
years the king of the Hawaii ordered all
lepers to be confined to an 800-acre tract on
the island of Molokai. This young priest
volunteered to serve the spiritual and other
needs of the lepers, while realizing he could
contract leprosy. He enhanced their living
conditions, building homes and erecting a
hospital. People all over the world donated
to this cause. He ministered to the lepers
and after twelve years it was not “You with
the cross of leprosy”; he then spoke of “we
lepers.” He died four years later of this
disease. A half century later, they carried his
remains to San Francisco and to Belgium.
His cortege through the city of San Francisco
en route to Belgium was composed of
thousands of Catholic clergy, state and city
officials and a 24-hour guard at the direction
of President Roosevelt.

Canonizing a saint is a long process. The

first stage is Venerable, then Blessed, and
finally Sainthood. Damien has been in the
stage of Blessed for a long time and next
Sunday, October 11, 2009, Pope Benedict
XVI will officially declare Damien St. Damien
of Molokai. He is a role model for all of us to
live our lives unselfishly and in a giving way
for the welfare of others. This we do in our
own existential way ( as we exist in our own
circumstances).
Middle school youth group will meet Monday
night in the Family Life Center youth rooms from
7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
Sunday morning PSR class for high school
students meets in the FLC youth rooms from
10:00 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. Remember to bring
your journal.

KNIGHT’S OF COLUMBUS 635 will hold its
Bingo/Luncheon on October 21 at St.Peter the
Apostle Catholic Church. Proceeds from the
event will be used to assist the mentally
challenged and less fortunate in the greater
Birmingham area. Tickets are $10.00 which
