Chemistry Lab Daswani Part I: Boyles Law

Andy

A sample of gas is trapped in a sealed container, which has a movable lid. Moving the lid up or down will change the volume inside the container. You will use an attached manometer to measure the pressure inside the container. Procedure: Move the lid of the container up or down. Record the resulting volume and pressure inside the container. Continue this process until data is obtained for at least si different volume and pressure combinations. !e sure to use a range of volume measurements to help you better compare the relationship of volume and pressure. Data and Observations: "resent all relevant data in a data table below. #nclude an observations section for any observations that you made during the lab.

Graph: Create an $Y scatterplot %line graph& of your data for this part of the lab. "lease do not ma'e a bar graph for this type of data. You may use any graphing tool to create the graph. !e sure to follow common guidelines for creating a graph. %( . appropriate title, scale the a is properly, and label the a is points&.

Conclusion: Answer the following )uestions after completing the lab. Describe the relationship that you observed between pressure and volume in this lab. Refer to your data and*or graph to help support your answer. According to the graph as the !olu"e in "L decreases the Pressure in #Pa increases$ %his concludes "e to believe there is a relationship between !olu"e and Pressure$ Do you thin' there is a point at which volume cannot be decreased any further for this sealed container of gas+ ( plain your answer in terms of what you 'now about the properties and characteristics of gases. As the volu"e shrin#s there is less space &or the gas$ %his "eans the gas "olecules are &orced closer together$ Once there is no "ore space &or the gas "olecules to "ove the volu"e can no longer decrease$ Part II: Charless Law Procedure: Carefully measure the volume of the trapped gas using the graduations %mar'ings& on the side of the container. Read and record the temperature of the gas using the thermometer attached to the container. ,se the buttons on the heater to change the temperature of the gas. -he volume of the

gas will change in response to the temperature change. .otice that the container is sealed and the pressure is ad/usted so that it remains constant. Measure and record the volume and temperature of the contained gas. Continue this process until data is obtained for at least si different temperatures. !e sure that the temperatures represent a large range of values in order to help you answer )uestions about the relationship between temperature and volume. Data and Observations: "resent all relevant data in a data table below. #nclude an observations section for any observations you made during the lab. Graph:

Create an $Y scatterplot %line graph& of your data for this part of the lab. "lease do not ma'e a bar graph for this type of data. You may use any graphing tool to create the graph. !e sure to follow common guidelines for creating a graph. %( . appropriate title, scale the a is properly, and label the a is points&. !e sure to graph temperature in the unit 'elvin and volume in the unit liters.

Conclusion: Answer the following )uestion regarding this part of the lab. Describe the relationship between volume and temperature, referring to your data and*or graph to support your answer. By loo#ing at the graph it see"s that the te"perature rises as the volu"e does$ 'nli#e Boyle(s Law this graph has both ) and * increasing instead o& one increasing and one decreasing$
