1. VMware Inc.

is a software company that develops many suite of software products specially for providing various virtualization solutions. There are many cloud products, datacenter products, desktop products and so on. vSphere is a software suite that comes under data center product. vSphere is like Microsoft Office suite which has many software like MS Office, MS Excel, MS ccess and so on. !ike Microsoft Office, vSphere is also a software suite that has many software components like v"enter, ES#i, vSphere client and so on. So, the com$ination of all these software components is vSphere. vSphere is not a particular software that you can install and use, %it is &ust a package name which has other su$ components'. ES#i, vSphere client and v"enter are components of vSphere. ES#i server is the most important part of vSphere. ES#i is the virtualization server. (t is type ) hypervisor. ll the virtual machines or *uest OS are installed on ES#i server. To install, manage and access those virtual servers which sit a$ove of ES#i server, you will need other part of vSphere suit called vSphere client or v"enter. +ow, vSphere client allows administrators to connect to ES#i servers and access or manage virtual machines. vSphere client is installed on the client machine ,e.g. dministrator-s laptop.. The vSphere client is used from client machine to connect to ES#i server and do management tasks. So now what is v"enter/ 0hy we need it/ Try cloning existing virtual machine using &ust a vSphere client without v"enter server. v"enter server is similar to vSphere client $ut it-s a server with more power. v"enter server is installed on 0indows Server or !inux Server. 1Mware v"enter server is a centralized management application that lets you manage virtual machines and ES#i hosts centrally. vSphere client is used to access v"enter Server and ultimately manage ES#i servers. v"enter server is compulsory for enterprises to have enterprise features like vMotion, 1Mware 2igh vaila$ility, 1Mware 3pdate Manager and 1Mware 4istri$uted 5esource Scheduler ,45S.. 6or example, you can easily clone existing virtual machine in v"enter server. So v"enter is another important part of vSphere package. 7ou have to $uy v"enter license separately.

The diagram a$ove shows vSphere suite in a more descriptive way. vSphere is a product suite, ES#i is a hypervisor installed on a physical machine. vSphere "lient is installed on laptop or desktop 8" and is used to access ES#i Server to install and manage virtual machines on ES#i server. v"enter server is installed as virtual machine on top of ES#i server. v"enter server is a vSphere component which is mostly used in large environment where there are many ES#i server and dozens of virtual machines. The v"enter server is also accessed $y vSphere client for management purpose. So, vSphere client is used to access ES#i server directly in small environment. (n larger environment, vSphere client is used again to access v"enter server which ultimately manages ES#i serve

2. A hypervisor, also called a virtual machine manager, is a program that allows multiple operating systems to share a single hardware host. Each operating system appears to have the host9s processor, memory, and other resources all to itself. 2owever, the hypervisor is actually controlling the host processor and resources, allocating what is needed to each operating system in turn and making sure that the guest operating systems ,called virtual machines. cannot disrupt each other 3. VMware ESXi is the successor to 1Mware ES#. :oth 1Mware ES#i and ES# are $are;metal hypervisors that can support virtual machines without the need for a host operating system, operating directly on the hardware. 1Mware ES#i software allocates the resources of physical hardware, such as processing, memory and data storage, for use on multiple virtual machines. 1Mware ES#i differs from ES# in that it includes a !inux operating system called the Service "onsole. 1Mware ES#i is an operating system;independent hypervisor $ased on the 1Mkerneloperating system interfacing with agents that run atop it. ES#i is the exclusive hypervisor for 1Mware vSphere <.x licenses. 1Mware descri$es an ES#i system as similar to a stateless compute node. State information can $e uploaded from a saved configuration file. ES#i9s 1Mkernel interfaces directly with 1Mware agents and approved third;party modules. 1irtualization administrators can configure 1Mware ES#i through its console or the 1Mware vSphere "lient and check 1Mware9s 2ardware "ompati$ility !ist for approved, supported hardware on which to install ES#i

4. vCenter: VMware vCenter is the next generation of VMware Virtual Center software. VMware vCenter allows
administrators in complex network environments with numerous virtual machines to monitor and manage the virtual machines remotely. VMware vCenter software works with VMware vSphere software to enable proactive management of virtual machines

Virtual center provides statistical information about the resource use of each virtual machine and provisions the ability to scale and adjust the compute, memory, storage and other resource management functions from a central application. It manages the performance of each virtual machine against specified benchmarks, and optimizes resources wherever required to provide consistent efficiency throughout the networked virtual architecture. Besides routine management, virtual center also ensures security by defining and monitoring access control to and from the virtual machines, migration of live machines, and interoperability and integration among other Web services and virtual environments

WMware VCenter Server is a data center management server application developed by VMware Inc. to monitor virtualized environments. VCenter Server provides centralized management and operation, resource provisioning and performance evaluation of virtual machines residing on a distributed virtual data center. VMware VCentre Server is designed primarily for VSphere, VMwares platform for building virtualized cloud infrastructures

VMware vCenter Server comes in two versions: Standard and Foundation. The Foundation edition is designed for small and medium-sized businesses that run up to three S! servers. The Standard version" on the other hand" is for large-scale vCenter Server deplo#ments. vCenter Server performs the following three $e# functions:

Visibility. vCenter Server allows #ou to configure S! servers and VMs" as well as monitor performance throughout the entire infrastructure" using events and alerts. The ob%ects in the virtual infrastructure can be securel# managed with roles and permissions.

Scalability. The visibilit# found in vCenter Server is scalable across hundreds of S! servers and thousands of VMs. &sing 'in$ed Mode" #ou can also manage multiple vCenter servers within the same vSphere client.

Automation. vCenter Server alerts can trigger actions. The (rchestrator feature in vCenter Server Standard allows #ou to automate hundreds of action
