Effects of Bullying to Students

CHAPTER I The Problem and its Background Introduction Bullying is an action done by a certain person who enjoys other students to treat them like the weak one than him. It is also a way of hurting other physically, spiritually or emotionally. It is mostly done by the students. There are students who want to tease their costudents or classmates. Sometimes it will end up in fighting or hurting the weaker one. It is one kind of hurting others which is also one kind of attitude who always dominate others, or aggressiveness that seeing by using force so that other people will be affected particular that if the attitude is not balanced. According to Don Olweus, a Norwegian researcher, bullying is a pattern of behavior that is repeated overtime against the same person/s with a noted power differential. It is also saying hurtful and unpleasant things, making fun of others, using mean or hurtful nicknames, completely overlooking someone, deliberately excluding someone from a group of friends, hitting, kicking, pulling hair, pushing or shutting a person inside, telling lies, spreading false rumors, sending mean notes, and trying to get other students dislike other person. Bullying is mostly experienced by the students in some school especially in public schools. It is also being experienced by some of our students in St. Thomas Academy which results to the growing case of bullying. Some bullied students are not telling this case on their

adviser or teachers not knowing that it can affect on their studies or on other things which can be the reason of change in their attitude, point of view towards other students or their selfconfidence. It is also the reason of some problems like having a change in their performance on academics and can be the reason of sudden change on their grades. Bullying can also have different kinds of effects to students in St. Thomas Academy.

Statement of the Problem The researches which will be conducted by the students of group 6 from III-Our Lady of Guadalupe aim the Grade 7 students to understand the effects of bullying to them physically or psychologically. We aim to answer the following questions which are related to the effects of bullying to a student: 1. Bullying does affect your studies? 2. Does it really affect the daily activities of a student? 3. Could it be the reason of lacking self-confidence? 4. Can it affect the attitudes of a student? 5. Does it really affect the point of view of a student to others?

Significance of the Study St. Thomas Academy can benefit on the researches to be conducted by having additional information on what the effects of bullying can do to the students for the next upcoming years. It can help the school to determine the problem of the bullied student and can possibly find the right way to lessen the case of bullying to St. Thomas Academy. It can also help them to learn how to help the students to understand the effects of bullying if it will be continuously conducted. This research can also benefit to the: Students- to have knowledge on what are the effects of bullying can do to them PSB officers- to understand more about what the case of bullying can do to a certain student Guidance councilors- it can help them to know what they can do to help the student being bullied Future researchers- for them to have some ideas on the researches that they will have

Scope and Limitation This research only focuses on a school located in Sto. Tomas, Batangas which is the St. Thomas, Academy. Forty five selected students from Grade seven will participate to answer the questions to be given about the research. This research scopes the effects of bullying to the daily

activities or their daily routine. You can also find out the possible attitude of a student which is being bullied.
