Benefits
Carbopol 676 polymer provides numerous benefits when formulating a wide range of HI&I products: High efficiency thickening (0.2 to 1.0 wt% typical use levels) for very cost-effective formulations. Suspension and stabilization of insoluble materials and particulates. Improved vertical cling which minimizes dripping and increases surface contact times. Shear thinning rheology suitable for non aerosol sprayable or pumpable product formulations. Excellent stability in oxidizing systems such as those containing chlorine bleach or peroxides.

Order of Addition To ensure maximum benefit and efficiency from the polymer, we recommend the following order of addition: 1. Water (deionized). 2. Carbopol 676 polymer. 3. Surfactants. 4. Builders (e.g., soda ash, phosphate). 5. Oils, waxes, etc. 6. Neutralizers and other high pH materials. 7. Chlorine bleach (>pH 12.5). 8. Hydrogen peroxide bleach (after neutralizing to desired product pH). 9. Abrasives, aesthetics, etc.
Order of addition will depend on the nature of the formulation ingredients.

Processing Guidelines
Dispersions can be prepared by slowly sifting the polymer into the vortex of a rapidly mixing solution. Techniques or devices which sprinkle the powder as discrete particles at a controlled rate are the most effective. This allows each particle to completely wet out in the water vortex. Conventional impellers such as propellers or turbines are recommended. High shear rates will disperse the polymer very rapidly; however, extremely high shear mixers or homogenizers should be carefully employed because they can break down the polymer resulting in permanent viscosity loss. For faster dispersion, break up soft agglomerates of dry powder formed by static electricity or humid conditions. The wetting time required is dependent upon the amount of Carbopol 676 polymer added, vessel geometry and water temperature. Some producers choose to make a stock dispersion of Carbopol 676 polymer in water and then add this dispersion to their formulation mix tank. For easier processing of a 2-5 wt% dispersion, 400 ppm of an inorganic acid can be added to the water prior to dispersion of the polymer. Under high shear agitation, dispersions of Carbopol 676 polymer can stabilize entrapped air. Antifoam, at use levels of 0.02 - 0.05 wt%, can be added to the water prior to the Carbopol 676 polymer in order to minimize or eliminate foaming.
Ingredient Compatibilities
Carbopol 676 polymer is compatible with many materials including nonionic surfactants, alcohols, waxes and abrasives. In addition, Carbopol 676 polymer is stable with oxidizers such as chlorine bleach and hydrogen peroxide and is stable at high alkaline pH. The viscosity and yield value provided by Carbopol 676 polymer can be influenced by the ionic strength of the system. Deionized or soft water is therefore recommended in product applications. Carbopol 676 polymer in the powder form does not support bacterial or fungal growth, but it does not inhibit such growth either. Typical use of preservatives is recommended as appropriate when using the polymer in formulated systems.
