Process Industry Practices Document Management

PIP ADG004 Guide for Authors Producing CAD Graphics for Process Industry Practices

PURPOSE AND USE OF PROCESS INDUSTRY PRACTICES In an effort to minimize the cost of process industry facilities, this Practice has been prepared from the technical requirements in the existing standards of major industrial users, contractors, or standards organizations. By harmonizing these technical requirements into a single set of Practices, administrative, application, and engineering costs to both the purchaser and the manufacturer should be reduced. While this Practice is expected to incorporate the majority of requirements of most users, individual applications may involve requirements that will be appended to and take precedence over this Practice. Determinations concerning fitness for purpose and particular matters or application of the Practice to particular project or engineering situations should not be made solely on information contained in these materials. The use of trade names from time to time should not be viewed as an expression of preference but rather recognized as normal usage in the trade. Other brands having the same specifications are equally correct and may be substituted for those named. All practices or guidelines are intended to be consistent with applicable laws and regulations including OSHA requirements. To the extent these practices or guidelines should conflict with OSHA or other applicable laws or regulations, such laws or regulations must be followed. Consult an appropriate professional before applying or acting on any material contained in or suggested by the Practice.

1.

Introduction
1.1 Purpose The purpose of this document is to provide guidelines for producing Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) associated with the production of practices for the Process Industry Practices (PIP) initiative. Use of this guide should ensure consistency of style and presentation of the practices. 1.2 Scope Detailed instructions are given for the production of CAD for PIP practices to the Function/Task Team and the assigned CAD Representative. This guide defines the recommended work process for the Function/Task Team Representative and CAD Representative coordinating the production of CAD for PIP practices.

2.

Definitions
Border Form - The form that defines the bordered drawing area and title block of a CAD drawing. PIP border forms in AutoCAD 12 and MicroStation 5.0 may be downloaded from the PIP website at http://pipdocs.org. Block (AutoCAD) - Drawing symbol used in creation of a CAD drawing. e.g. valve symbol, flange symbol, bubbles, etc. CAD Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) Index Form - Appendix B of this practice. A form to be completed by the CAD Representative and the Function/Task Team Representative. The CAD Index Form provides quality checks for the graphical and technical integrity of the CAD drawings. Cell (MicroStation) - Drawing symbol used in creation of a CAD drawing. e.g. valve symbol, flange symbol, bubbles, etc. Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) - Drawings or illustrations produced on computer systems and drafting software, e.g. AutoCAD, MicroStation. CAD Representative Engineering firm contact assigned by the engineering firm to coordinate the production of the CAD portion of a PIP practice with the Function/Task Team Representative and the CAD Designer. The CAD representative assures graphical content of the CAD drawings. The CAD representative also assures the CAD deliverables to the Function/Task Team Representative are provided in accordance with this document. See Section 4 - Deliverables. Designer Drafting designer assigned by the CAD Representative to produce CAD drawings for PIP practices. Function/Task Team Representative - Function/Task Team member assigned to coordinate the production of the CAD portion of a PIP practice with the CAD Representative. The

The Function/Task Team Representative also assures the CAD deliverables to the PIP Editors are provided in accordance with this document. See Section 4 Deliverables. Landscape - The orientation of the PIP border form that presents the data in a horizontal style 11" wide, 8.5" high. See example in Appendix A. Lead Sheet A legend of standard symbols, line definitions, and other drawing components used to create CAD drawings. Portable Document Format (PDF) - Read and print only format file type produced by Adobe Acrobat PDF Writer or Adobe Acrobat Distiller. Portrait - The orientation of the PIP border form that presents the data in a vertical style 8.5" wide, 11" high. See example in Appendix A. Prototype Drawing (AutoCAD) - A CAD file that has been preset with a standard sheet size, title block, borders, layers, and symbol library. It is the starting drawing for the Designer to begin a new drawing. Seed File (Microstaion) - A CAD file that has been preset with a standard sheet size, title block, borders, layers, and symbol library. It is the starting drawing for the Designer to begin a new drawing.
