INTRODUCTION
HMT Machine Tools Ltd., Kalamassery is among the five machine tool manufacturing units of the subsidiary company HMT Machine Tools Ltd. The holding company is HMT Ltd. Machine Tools production started in India in 19 ! "ith the commissioning of the first factory of HMT at #angalore in collaboration "ith $%&L%K$' ("it)erland to cataly)e industrial gro"th. (ubse*uently, the machine tools mar+et gre" by leaps and bound and HMT stood and remained a leading Machine Tools company till ,!!-. $ne of the most challenging tas+s of a business may be organi)ing the people "ho perform its "or+. . business may begin "ith one person doing all the necessary tas+s. .s the business becomes successful and gro"s, ho"ever, there is generally more "or+, and more people are needed to perform various tas+s. Through this division of "or+, individuals can become specialists at a specific /ob. #ecause there are several people often in different locations "or+ing to"ard a common ob/ective, 0there must be a plan sho"ing ho" the "or+ "ill be organi)ed. The plan for the systematic arrangement of "or+ is the organization structure. $rgani)ation structure is comprised of functions, relationships, responsibilities, authorities, and communications of individuals "ithin each department. The typical depiction of structure is the organi)ational chart. The organi)ational chart has been described as loo+ing li+e a tree, "ith the roots representing the president and the board of directors, "hile the branches symboli)e the various departments and the leaves depict the staff "or+ers. $rgani)ational study helps a researcher to understand the "or+ing and policy ma+ing activities of the company as a "hole. It provides a researcher the practical +no"ledge about the functioning and co1ordination of the activities of the various departments.
