A ball bearing operates on the following work cycle : Element Radial load(N) Speed (RPM) Element time No. (%) 1 3000 720 30 2 7000 1440 40 3 5000 900 30 The dynamic load capacity of the bearing is 16600 N. Calculate a. The average speed of rotation; [5] b. The equivalent radial load and [6] c. The bearing life. [5]
2. Design a side or overhung crankshaft for a 250 mm 300 mm gas engine. The weight

1.

of the flywheel is 30 kN and the explosion pressure is 2.1 N/mm2. The gas pressure at the maximum torque is 0.9 N/mm2, when the crank angle is 35 from I. D. C. The connecting rod is 4.5 times the crank radius. [16]
3. Design a cast iron trunk type piston for a single acting four stroke engine developing

75 kW per cylinder when running at 600 r.p.m. The other available data is as follows: Maximum gas pressure = 4.8 N/mm2; Indicated mean effective pressure = 0.65 N/ mm2; Mechanical efficiency = 95%; Radius of crank = 110 mm; Fuel consumption = 0.3 kg/BP/hr; Calorific value of fuel (higher) = 44 103kJ/kg; Difference of temperatures at the centre and edges of the piston head =200C; Allowable stress for the material of the piston = 33.5 MPa; Allowable stress for the material of the piston rings and gudgeon pin = 80 MPa; Allowable bearing pressure on the piston barrel = 0.4 N/ mm2 and allowable bearing pressure on the gudgeon pin = 17 N/ mm2. [16]
4. A load of 10 kN is applied to a steel curved beam as shown in the figure. Compute

the increase in distance between the points A and B due to the load. Assume G =0.84 105 N/ mm2 , E = 2.10 105 N/ mm2 [16]

5. A 18 kW, 900 r.p.m. motor drives a centrifugal pump at 290 r.p.m. by means of a

leather belt. The pulleys are of cast iron and are 1.2 meter centre distance. The pulleys of diameter less than 150 mm should not be used. The coefficient of friction between the leather belt and the cast iron pulley is 0.35, and the mass of the belt is 9 kg/m width/m length. The maximum permissible tension per mm width of the belt is 10 N. The drive is to be designed for 20% overload. Determine the pulley diameters, the required width and length of the belt. Also find the initial tension with which the belt is to be mounted on the pulleys. [16] 6. A pair of helical gears consist of a 20 teeth pinion meshing with a 100 teeth gear. The pinion rotates at 720 r.p.m. The normal pressure angle is 20 while the helix angle is 25. The face width is 40 mm and the normal module is 4 mm. The pinion as well as gear are made of steel having ultimate strength of 600 MPa and heat treated to a surface hardness of 300 B.H.N. The service factor and factor of safety are 1.5 and 2 respectively. Assume that the velocity factor accounts for the dynamic load and calculate the power transmitting capacity of the gears. [16]
7. The screw of a press has square threads and is 60 mm nominal diameter. The

maximum unsupported length is 40 mm. The screw is made of 25C4 steel and the nut is of phosphor bronze. Determine the capacity of the press and length of the nut. If the coefficient of friction for the threads is 0.15 and 0.14 for the thrust collar, determine the necessary torque, taking outside and inside diameter of thrust collar to be 100mm and 30 mm respectively. [16]
8. A lathe has two flat,CI slide ways of equal width and height half the width. While

turning a 300 mm diameter work piece, the tangential, radial and axial components of the cutting force were found to be Px=1400N, Py=1600N and Pz=5000N respectively. Calculate the lathe slide ways width assuming suitable values. Cast iron slide ways can with stand a maximum pressure of 2500 kN/m2. [16]
