Fifth Sunday In Ordinary Time

February 9, 2014
Know Thy True Self and Act Accordingly!
When salt refuses to season, the meal is forever bland. When light refuses to shine, darkness wins the day. In words similar to these, Christ describes in todays Gospel a situation that has become hopeless! In other words, things are really bad when the solution doesnt believe that its the answer to the problem when it actually is! After all, what good is a voice that doesnt speak, or a mind that doesnt think or a heart that doesnt care, or a hand that refuses to share? What good is a Christian that doesnt witness to Christ, or a spiritual counselor that offers no sound advice? What good is a truth that doesnt set free or a soup kitchen that doesnt think it should feed? What good is mercy that refuses to forgive or a charity that does everything but give? What about a parish that doesnt serve or a courage that lacks all nerve? What good is a school that doesnt teach; or an arm that doesnt reach; a faith that wont trust, or righteousness thats not just? What good is a disciple that doesnt follow; or a compassion that only rings hollow? What about a leader that wont lead or a believer that wont believe? Christs words in todays Gospel are meant to awaken his Body, the Church, to realize who it is so that it can then do what God always intended to do. You ARE salt, so, SEASON! You ARE light, so SHINE! There is a passage in scripture that states, the world eagerly awaits the revelation of the children of God (Romans 8:19). Maybe today the word eagerly is an understatement. For today the world desperately waits for the day that all believers live what they profess and preachers practice what they preach. Our world wants and needs the Church to witness to the Great Commandment of Love and the Great Commission to Evangelize! For the Good News is too good to be kept hidden and those who have yet to hear it are too desperate to be kept waiting! The time is past due for God to get the Glory He deserves from the good works being accomplished in your life! Fr. Patrick A. Smith 2014

He has asked that you make a pledge to the 2014 Cardinals Appeal. The Cardinals Appeal not only funds the operations of the archdiocese, it funds services that are of great help to the ministries here in our parish. This year, the theme of the Appeal is Seek First the Kingdom of God. (Matthew 6:33) As we seek first the Kingdom of God, we have the capability of helping it to be present in our lives and in the lives of those around us. How does this happen? Through our works of charity, our works of love and compassion. Contributions to the Cardinals Appeal offers each of us the opportunity to respond to the needs of others by enabling ministries and services that touch thousands of lives. Please prayerfully consider a generous pledge to the 2014 Cardinals Appeal.
