MODULE SUMMARY

Aims and Summary This module is intended to prepare students to follow creative and systematic innovation approaches for problem solving. Students will be trained in approaches such as lateral thinking, six thinking hats, brainstorming, mind mapping, story boarding, TRIZ, analogy, morphological analysis and 6-3-5 techniques. Students will use Creax and mind mapping software for creating innovative ideas.

Entry Requirements (pre-requisites and co-requisites) Normally to be qualified for entry to the Postgraduate Engineering Programme Excluded Combinations None Composition of Module Mark (including weighting of components) Full-time / Part-time : 50% Written Examination and 50 % Assignment Pass Requirements A minimum of 40 % marks in the written examination and a minimum of 40% marks in the assignment and overall 40% marks are required for a pass Special Features 80% attendance in theory and 80% attendance in laboratory are required. Creativity and Creative Thinking - Overview, Creative Thinking, Barriers to Creativity (Personal and Organisational), Creative process, Determinants of creativity, Various creative techniques (Brainstorming, Fuzzy Logic, Lateral Thinking vs. Vertical Thinking, Six Thinking Hats, Problem Reversing, Mind Mapping, Analogies, Story Boarding, 6-3-5 techniques, Morphological Analysis). Innovation - Innovation as a Core competency, Sources of Innovation, Types of Innovations such as Process innovation, Product innovation and market innovation, Goals of innovation. Systematic Innovation - TRIZ: a. Overview of TRIZ and method of usage - TRIZ map, Advantages of TRIZ, Prism of TRIZ, 5 Levels of invention, History, Application philosophy - '4 Pillars' Teaching and learning methods b. Problem Definition - Effective TRIZ-based problem definition process and application in real problem-solving environment. Developing model sets for the problem, Constraints and constraint management, IFR, Zone of conflict/'sore-point, Functionality and Function/Attribute analysis. Ideality and problem definition, Ideal final result, Technical systems and hierarchy, Functionality and Main useful function, Ideality exercise. c. Resources - Identification and maximal use of resources in and around the system. Strategies for identifying resources. d. Trends of Evolution - Working knowledge of the TRIZ trends of evolution, and application in both problem solving and intellectual property strengthening situations. Predicting the Technological future, Introduction to TRIZ trends, Trends of evolution Exercise, Stages of evolution and S-Curves, Limiting contradictions and trends, Trends and intellectual property, Trends and IPR exercise. e. Contradictions/40 Principles - Working knowledge on the contradictions part of the TRIZ toolkit. Contradiction Matrix, Psychological inertia, Trade offs and compromise, Finding contradictions exercise, Principles, Exercise, Two kinds of contradiction, Thinking in time and space, Physical contradictions. f. Practical Problem Solving - Solving real problems using TRIZ facilitator.

Both written examination scripts and assignment reports will be double marked.
