Tutorial Sheet -3, Material Science, 2013-14 Assuming that the polarizability in static field of an argon atom is equal to 1.4 10 40 farad m 2 , calculate the relative dielectric constant of argon at 0 oC and 1 atmosphere. An atom has a polarizability of 10 40 farad m 2 ; it finds itself at a distance of 10 angstroms from a proton. Calculate the dipole moment induced in the atom and the force with which the proton and the atom attract each other. A particle of charge Q coulombs is bound elastically to an equilibrium position with a force constant k Newton m 1. What is the polarizability of the system? Assuming that dipoles in a polar liquid can assume only two orientations, parallel and antiparallel to the applied Electric field, derive the expression for dielectric constant. A dielectric consisting of non polar molecules shows electronic as well as ionic polarization. The natural frequency for the electronic and the ionic part lies in optical and infrared part of the spectrum respectively. Draw the graph for real and imaginary part of polarizability vs. frequency of the applied field. The Bakelite is found to have real part of its complex relative dielectric constant as 4.36 with loss tangent of 2.8 X 10-2 at frequency of 1MHz. Calculate the complex polarizability assuming Lorentz field. Assume N=4X1028/m3. The Bakelite is put between parallel plate capacitor that has an area of 10 cm2 and separation of 0.1mm. Calculate the dielectric loss if an alternating voltage of amplitude 2.0 volts is applied at frequency of 1MHz to the capacitor. For Propyl alcohol (polar liquid), the relaxation time is 10-10 seconds. Explain what will be the polarization and loss at frequency of 1, 106, and 1010 cycles per second. For a polar liquid having relaxation time , draw the polarization vs. time figure for a square wave of frequency for cases <<1 and >>1. Starting from Clausius Mossotti relation show that for a polar liquid the relative dielectric constant diverges as temperature approaches Curie temperature. If each unit cell of ferroelectric BaTiO3 has a dipole moment of 5.2x10-30 C-m, calculate its Curie temperature and Curie constant. Given that the volume of each unit cell is 6.38 x10-29 and the internal field constant is 1.
