About the Seminar Womens Studies (WS) is an academic arm of womens movement which analyze the discourse on text and context of inequalities. It is an intellectual agent to change women from an object of knowledge into a subject capable of appropriating knowledge. Womens Studies has been developed more than five decades ago to tackle the inequalities and disparities in the society. It is particularly interested in examining the specific ways in which some groups are advanced and others still at the disadvantaged state. Womens Studies as an Academic Discipline poses challenges than opportunities. It has many challenges from the established mainstream disciplines and knowledge. The discipline has to fight against the established social construct of gender, power relations and intellectual ideologies. The womens movement began to effect social transformation, but they have been subject to increasing backlash from conservative forces that resist such changes. Hence the studies should focus on practical needs of women and nations socio-economic and political needs. Against this back drop the Womens Studies Centre and the Dept. of Womens Studies proposed to organize a two-day National Seminar on Challenges and Strategies of Womens Studies as an Academic Discipline with the following objectives : To find out the theoretical frame work for Womens Studies perspective in different dimensions of activities such as teaching, research, advocacy, field outreach etc. To network with different stakeholders and academicians for the mainstreaming the discipline and develop curriculum and teaching method. To integrate Womens Studies perspectives in the content of subject matter through the gendering of language, teaching methodology and orientation and To identify various challenges and strategies to secure recognition and legitimacy with in academia.

About the University The name Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVV) is self explanatory enough to suggest that it is an exclusively Womens University, which incidentally enjoys the unique distinction of being the first of its kind in Andhra Pradesh and the second of its kind in India. Ever since its inception in 1983 with the prime objective of emancipation and empowerment of women through education, it has been offering varied and professionally oriented post-graduate and graduate courses. The participation of women in the community development forms an important component of the curriculum. Accordingly emancipation of women through an acquisition of adequate knowledge and their empowerment through skill upgradation, deep involvement and active participation in various activities of the society are meant for reaching the goal of establishing a progressive egalitarian society. About Womens Studies Centre The Womens Studies Centre with the support of the UGC was established in 1984 and the financial grant was released in 1988 to get its diversified activities relating to womens development and empowerment. The underlying philosophy of the Womens Studies Centre is to generate knowledge and to transmit it through teaching, training, research, documentation extension and curriculum development thus facilitating the academic diversification for the intellectuals as well as for the activists, NGOs and the personnel working for gender empowerment. At present the Centre is in the third phase. The Department of Womens Studies was started in 1989 with PG programme in Womens Studies and the Research Programmes were introduced in 1990. The Department is also offering P.G. programme in Applied Economics since 2003 and Economics in 2013.
