PRANAYAMA (A RENDEVOUZ WITH THE VITAL/MASTERY OVER PRANA) PRANA=THE UNIVERSAL VITAL FORCE (Which pervades mineral world, vegetable kingdom and animal kingdom including human beings where it manifests as panch prana i.e five functions viz (Prana,Apana,Samana,Vyana and Udana). TWO SCHOOLS: (1)Hatha Yoga school of Pranayama & (2)Patanjali (or Vasistha) school of Pranayama. (1) HATHA YOGA:Puraka=Inhalation; Kumbhaka=Holding the breath;Rechaka=Exhalation. There is a certain ratio prescribed(according to the need and capacity of the student) for the time inhalation, holding and exhalation of the breath of an individual. When you inhale and hold the breath,it is called ANTHAH KUMBHAKA and when you breath out and wait for a while before inhalation,it is called BAHYA KUMBHAKA OR SUNYA KUMBHAKA.Without proper guide, this Pranayama done three safty valves [Bandhas or Neuromuscular Locks:Jalandhar (at Jugular Notch),Uddiyana (at stomach) and Moola (at rectum)] can cause some harm to an unrefined system. The safer way, therefore for a new sadhaka is to practice the Patajali style of Pranayama where holding of breath happens automatically and effortlessly. That type of natural suspension of breath is called KEVALA KUMBHAKA or SAHAJA KUMBHAKA and can be experienced during NADHI SUDDHI like practices of Pranayama.(Nadhi=channels or routes of prana:Suddi=purification or balance) (2) PATANJALI SCHOOL OF PRANAYAMA includes slow, deep and rhythmic breathing for calming down of the mind. Mind is like a tree which has breathing as its root.Let us see this line from the ancient yogic text Hatha Yoga Pradipika:CHALE VATE CHITHAM CHALET,NISCHALE VATE NISCHALAM BHAVET i.e When breathing moves, and when it stops, mind stops. This shows the connection between our mind (emotions included) and the breathing. By handling our breath, we can easily handle our mind. By consciously slowing down the breath, we can tame the unruly mind. SUTRAS OF PATANJALI ABOUT PRANAYAM: (A) DEFINITION: TASMIN SATI SVASA PRASVASYOH GATI VICCHEDAH PRANAYAMAH (II-49) i.e. (Stopping the movement of) our slowing down of the speed of inhalation and exhalation is Pranayama (after the practice of Asanas). (B) TWO RESULTS: (i) TATAH KSIYATE PRAKASH AVARAN (II-52) i.e. the inner effulgence is uncoverd and (ii) DHARANASU CA YOGYATA MANASAH (II-53) i.e. the mind becomes capable of Dharana (pre-meditative state).

PRANAYAMA ( A JOURNEY ON THE PATH OF AWARENESS TOWARDS FREEDOM ) PRANA is most dormant in mineral world. Progressive manifestation I vegetable kingdom, animal world, human and divine beings featuring more and more freedom. (Ref: Sri Aurobindos concept of yoga as movement towards divinity and Swami Vivekanandas proclamation BE FREE) PRACTICE; We move from linear awareness (single dimension) in Nadi Suddhi to area (Surface/2-D ) Awareness in NADANUSANDHANA (Nada=sounds; Anusandana=follow up, taming). NADI SUDDHI is purification or balancing the Nadis (channels or route of prana) Numbering 72,00,000 (as per Prasanaopanishad)

This is net work of channels in Pranamaya kosa (Sukshma Sarira or subtle body)can be regulated by two major channels Chandra Nadi (moon channel) and Surya nadi (sun channel ) that entwine Sushumna, the Central channel which has prana coiled (as kundalini)at its base.Chandra Nadi and Surya Nadi can be manipulated by breathing alternatively from Left and Right Nostrils. That is why Nadi suddhi is also referred to as Alternate Nostril Breathing.Chandra and Surya Nadis are also called as IDA & PINGALA respectively. In COOLING PRANAYAMA one breaths in from month(in three different ways)and breaths out from nose. Shaping the tongue as a beak and inhaling is SITALI.In SITKARI you fold the tip of tongue up towards palate and roll it down where as in SADANTA teeth are closed gently during inhalation with tip of tongue touching the back of closed teeth at junction of both the jaws at centre. NADANUSANDHANA is merging in silence following the sound vibrations.Riding the sound waves mind can dissolve (LAYA) in silence. AKARA:Feel the vibes in the area of abdomen UKARA:Feel the vibes in the hollow of the Chest MAKARA:Feel the vibes in the face OMKARA:Feel the vibes all over the system and produce and nice resonance. BHRAMARI(Bhramara=Wasp).Bhramari means producing a humming sound like a wasp (for the sake of familiarity it is referred to as the sound of a honey-bee)Here one inhales deeply and while exhaling (lips closed)makes a humming sound.
