ment channels, including microphones, in 1/3 octave bands by using the residual intensity mode of the CAL290. From this, a correction function can be generated within the analyzer to correct for any amplitude and phase errors which may have existed between channels prior to the normalization procedure. This connection procedure optimizes the performance of the complete measurement chain; analyzer, probe and microphones. In fact, the system will function to the requirements of the standards without phase-matched microphones if properly normalized.

Residual Intensity 2.0 kHz Pulse Test SPL (Sound Pressure Level)
Each Mode has a specic function for operation. The following is a description of each Mode: Residual Intensity In this Mode of operation the same magnitude signal, with zero phase difference, is applied to both microphones for the purpose of measuring the residual intensity associated with the measurement instrumentation. In this Mode, the signals applied to the microphones have the same magnitude, but with a difference in phase by an amount corresponding to a user-specied value of spacing between microphones. For example, if the user desired to use a 25mm spacer with the intensity probe, it would be necessary to input a value of 25 mm for the spacer to the analyzer as part of the intensity measurement setup since this is a necessary parameter in the calculation of intensity. If an actual probe were being used, the phase difference between the two microphones would be the result of the time required for a plane wave to travel between them. When using the CAL290, the microphones are close together so the performance of a probe is simulated by producing signals with the same phase difference as would occur when using a probe. The user selects one of the following spacer lengths: 6, 12, 25, or 50mm. The

ambient temperature and pressure, also used in the calculation of intensity, are measured by the Model CAL290 and the output level scaled accordingly. The level is also adjusted for effects of air density. These values also need to be input to the analyzer as part of the intensity measurement setup. Sound Pressure Level In this Mode, the same magnitude signals, without phase considerations, are applied to both microphones for the purpose of performing a level calibration for each microphone. The user can display the level corresponding to a measurement made with a meter set for Flat, A or C weighting. WARNING! Do not use Intensity Mode for SPL calibrations. 2 kHz Pulse In this Mode of operation, a gated 2 kHz transient signal is applied to both microphones once every 10 seconds. This signal is intended for the verication of the accuracy of the Slow, Fast and Impulse detectors of sound level meters. The duration of the signal can be selected over the range 2 mS to 2,000 mS in a 2-5 sequence. A continuous 2 kHz signal can also be selected in this mode.

The following table displays the layout of the Signals available for all Modes other than the 2.0 kHz Pulse Test: Signal Types Frequency Available Settings Options 6349.60 Hz, 5039.68 Hz, 4000.00 Hz, 3174.80 Hz, 2519.84 Hz, 2000.00 Hz, 1587.40 Hz, 1259.92 Hz, 1000.00 Hz, 793.70 Hz, 629.96 Hz, 500.00 Hz, 396.85 Hz, 314.98 Hz, 250.00 Hz, 198.43 Hz, 157.49 Hz, 125.00 Hz, 99.21 Hz, 78.75 Hz, 62.50 Hz, 49.61 Hz, 39.37 Hz, 31.25 Hz, LL 24.80 Hz, 19.69 Hz N/A N/A
The following is a description of each Signal type available for all Modes (except the 2.0 kHz Pulse Test): Frequency This sinusoidal signal may be controlled either manually or remotely. For remote commands see the section in the appendix titled Remote Commands. Under manual control, the user may select a sinusoidal signal at the center frequency at any 1/3 octave band (approximate) over the range 20 Hz - 6.3kHz. The amplitude is adjustable in 10 dB steps over a range which is dependent upon the selected frequency. This produces equal amplitude signals at the center frequency (approximate) of all 1/3 octave bands in the frequency range 25 Hz to 5 kHz. The signal level is then scaled to correspond to full octave band levels over the frequency band 31.5 Hz to 4kHz. The signal level for each octave band is manually adjustable from 79.77 to 84.77 dB.

This produces equal amplitude signals at the center frequency (approximate) of all 1/3 octave bands in the frequency range 25 Hz to 5 kHz. The signal level for each 1/3 octave band is manually adjustable from 75 to 80 dB in 1 dB increments. In the 2 kHz Pulse Mode, the signal level is manually adjustable from 70 to 120 dB in 10 dB increments. When the 2.0 kHz Pulse Test Mode is rst selected, the Signal will be set to Cont (Continuous). Press the Signal arrow keys to select a higher (or lower) duration time in the list of available values. In the pulse test mode, the CAL290 will rst produce a calibration tone lasting until the system has stabilized and is producing signals with amplitudes at the proper level. Once stabilization is obtained, tone bursts or pulses will be generated at intervals of ten seconds. A continuous feedback loop is not used, so if for any reason the microphones are replaced by other microphones, it is necessary to press the Mute key twice to initiate a new stabilization of the signal level. For the 2.0 kHz Pulse Test Mode, the Signal value represents the duration of the burst as follows: Cont. (Continuous) 2000 mSec 500 mSec 200 mSec 50 mSec 20 mSec 5 mSec 2 mSec

Mute Key
When the Mute Key is pressed, the instrument is in the Muted State, meaning that no output signal is being produced. The Mode Display appears for only two seconds before it is replaced by the message Signal is MUTED. When rst switched On, the CAL290 is in the Muted State. Pressing either of the Mode arrow keys causes the Mode Display to reappear for two more seconds. Pressing a Mode arrow key before the display returns to Signal is MUTED shifts the selected Mode. When the CAL290 is producing an output signal, the instrument is not in Muted state.
Stabilization
For example, the message NOT READY! 01 55 23 indicates that the CAL290 has not yet stabilized. A stabilization time is generally required following a change of Mode or Signal. The message NOT READY! XX YY ZZ on the display indicates that stabilization is in process and will continue until the numerical values of XX, YY and ZZ decreases to zero.
