ment channels, including microphones, in 1/3 octave bands by using the residual intensity mode of the CAL290. From this, a correction function can be generated within the analyzer to correct for any amplitude and phase errors which may have existed between channels prior to the normalization procedure. This connection procedure optimizes the performance of the complete measurement chain; analyzer, probe and microphones. In fact, the system will function to the requirements of the standards without phase-matched microphones if properly normalized.

After a change in the Mode, the message NOT READY! will appear while the system is stabilizing, after which the operating display will appear. After the CAL290 has been turned on and warmed up, pressing the Mode arrow keys begins the operation of the machine. When operating, the CAL290 display indicates the following parameters: Mode Signal @ Level dB To change the Mode of operation, do the following: The initial Mode is set to Intensity, 25 mm spacer immediately after the CAL290 is switched on and warmed up. Step 1 Immediately after the CAL290 has been switched on and warmed up, press either the Previous Mode or Next Mode to display the initial Mode: Intensity, 25 mm spacer 1000.00 Hz @ 120.00 dB

Step 2 Press the Previous Mode (or Next) to shift the selected Mode to the one higher (or lower) in the list of Modes. Intensity, 12 mm spacer 1000.00 Hz @ 120.00 dB

Residual Intensity 2.0 kHz Pulse Test SPL (Sound Pressure Level)

Each Mode has a specic function for operation. The following is a description of each Mode: Residual Intensity In this Mode of operation the same magnitude signal, with zero phase difference, is applied to both microphones for the purpose of measuring the residual intensity associated with the measurement instrumentation. In this Mode, the signals applied to the microphones have the same magnitude, but with a difference in phase by an amount corresponding to a user-specied value of spacing between microphones. For example, if the user desired to use a 25mm spacer with the intensity probe, it would be necessary to input a value of 25 mm for the spacer to the analyzer as part of the intensity measurement setup since this is a necessary parameter in the calculation of intensity. If an actual probe were being used, the phase difference between the two microphones would be the result of the time required for a plane wave to travel between them. When using the CAL290, the microphones are close together so the performance of a probe is simulated by producing signals with the same phase difference as would occur when using a probe. The user selects one of the following spacer lengths: 6, 12, 25, or 50mm. The

ambient temperature and pressure, also used in the calculation of intensity, are measured by the Model CAL290 and the output level scaled accordingly. The level is also adjusted for effects of air density. These values also need to be input to the analyzer as part of the intensity measurement setup. Sound Pressure Level In this Mode, the same magnitude signals, without phase considerations, are applied to both microphones for the purpose of performing a level calibration for each microphone. The user can display the level corresponding to a measurement made with a meter set for Flat, A or C weighting. WARNING! Do not use Intensity Mode for SPL calibrations. 2 kHz Pulse In this Mode of operation, a gated 2 kHz transient signal is applied to both microphones once every 10 seconds. This signal is intended for the verication of the accuracy of the Slow, Fast and Impulse detectors of sound level meters. The duration of the signal can be selected over the range 2 mS to 2,000 mS in a 2-5 sequence. A continuous 2 kHz signal can also be selected in this mode.

1/3 Octave Bands 1/1 Octave Bands

The following is a description of each Signal type available for all Modes (except the 2.0 kHz Pulse Test): Frequency This sinusoidal signal may be controlled either manually or remotely. For remote commands see the section in the appendix titled Remote Commands. Under manual control, the user may select a sinusoidal signal at the center frequency at any 1/3 octave band (approximate) over the range 20 Hz - 6.3kHz. The amplitude is adjustable in 10 dB steps over a range which is dependent upon the selected frequency. This produces equal amplitude signals at the center frequency (approximate) of all 1/3 octave bands in the frequency range 25 Hz to 5 kHz. The signal level is then scaled to correspond to full octave band levels over the frequency band 31.5 Hz to 4kHz. The signal level for each octave band is manually adjustable from 79.77 to 84.77 dB.

1/3 Octave Bands

This produces equal amplitude signals at the center frequency (approximate) of all 1/3 octave bands in the frequency range 25 Hz to 5 kHz. The signal level for each 1/3 octave band is manually adjustable from 75 to 80 dB in 1 dB increments. In the 2 kHz Pulse Mode, the signal level is manually adjustable from 70 to 120 dB in 10 dB increments. When the 2.0 kHz Pulse Test Mode is rst selected, the Signal will be set to Cont (Continuous). Press the Signal arrow keys to select a higher (or lower) duration time in the list of available values. In the pulse test mode, the CAL290 will rst produce a calibration tone lasting until the system has stabilized and is producing signals with amplitudes at the proper level. Once stabilization is obtained, tone bursts or pulses will be generated at intervals of ten seconds. A continuous feedback loop is not used, so if for any reason the microphones are replaced by other microphones, it is necessary to press the Mute key twice to initiate a new stabilization of the signal level. For the 2.0 kHz Pulse Test Mode, the Signal value represents the duration of the burst as follows: Cont. (Continuous) 2000 mSec 500 mSec 200 mSec 50 mSec 20 mSec 5 mSec 2 mSec

Previous and Next Level Keys

In the 2.0 kHz Pulse Test Mode, the Level arrow buttons increase or decrease the pulse duration instead of the signal level. After the Mode and Signal is chosen, pressing the Level arrow keys allows the user to select a dB level for the signal output. When rst switched On, the Level value of the signal output will be 120 dB. Press the Level arrow keys to increase (or decrease) this value. The permissible range of levels is a function of the Mode and Signal selections. See the Specications and Standards section in the appendix. After modifying the Level value, when switching between the Intensity Modes, the level will remain the same. This is also true when switching between the SLM modes.

Mute Key
When the Mute Key is pressed, the instrument is in the Muted State, meaning that no output signal is being produced. The Mode Display appears for only two seconds before it is replaced by the message Signal is MUTED. When rst switched On, the CAL290 is in the Muted State. Pressing either of the Mode arrow keys causes the Mode Display to reappear for two more seconds. Pressing a Mode arrow key before the display returns to Signal is MUTED shifts the selected Mode. When the CAL290 is producing an output signal, the instrument is not in Muted state.

Stabilization
For example, the message NOT READY! 01 55 23 indicates that the CAL290 has not yet stabilized. A stabilization time is generally required following a change of Mode or Signal. The message NOT READY! XX YY ZZ on the display indicates that stabilization is in process and will continue until the numerical values of XX, YY and ZZ decreases to zero.

XX and YY indicate the amplitude error for each of the two channels and ZZ indicates the phase error.

Using the CAL290

This section provides a step-by-step example of a typical measurement using the CAL290. In this example you will select a Mode, Signal, and Level in order to do a simple calibration. The operation of the Model CAL290 is susceptible to vibration and external sound elds. It is recommended that it be used in relatively quiet environments such as ofce spaces and instrumentation laboratories. To perform a simple calibration: For best results: When using a sound intensity probe, insert the microphones with the channel 1 microphone in the upward oriented opening. When using a single microphone, use the plug supplied with the instrument to block the other microphone opening. Step 1 Place the CAL290 on the vibration isolation support cushion provided. The cushion should also be placed on a surface which is vibration-free.

Step 2 Next, slide two microphones rmly into the microphone openings. Step 3 Press the On/Off key to turn the instrument on. When the CAL290 is ready to operate, the LCD displays the instrument serial number, revision number of the rmware, temperature, and barometric pressure: sn CAL290A0104 rev 1.12 25.5oC 852 mbar

Step 4 Press a Mode arrow key until the LCD displays the Mode you desire. In this example we will choose Intensity, 50 mm spacer. A screen similar to the following appears: Intensity, 50 mm spacer 25.5oC 852 mbar Step 5 Next, choose a Signal by pressing a Signal arrow key. In this example we will choose 1000.00Hz. A screen similar to the following appears: Signal is MUTED 1000.00 Hz @ 80.00 dB Step 6 Then, choose a dB Level. Press the Level arrow key and for this example, choose 100.00dB. A screen similar to the following appears: Signal is MUTED 1000.00 Hz @ 100.00 dB Step 7 After you have specied your Mode, Signal and Level press the Mute button to begin the calibration. You must wait until the signal stabilizes. NOT READY! XX YY ZZ appears on the screen. When the values XX YY ZZ have decreased to zero the unit is stabilized.

Step 3 Select a frequency by issuing an F followed by the value in Hz. The following table gives examples of this command: Command F1000 F2000.98 Frequency produced 1000 Hz 2000.98 Hz

If the level is remotely set to a value below or above the range of the mode, then the level will be readjusted automatically to the minimum or maximum level (See appendix A for minimum and maximum ranges). Setting a level less than 70 dB forces the Mute state. Setting a level above 70 dB ends the Mute state.

Step 4 Select a dB level by issuing an L followed by the value in dB. The following table gives examples of this command: Command L120.05 L90 Frequency produced 120.05 dB 90 dB

All commands will be responded with an OK, cr, lf. To verify that a command has been accepted and set, use query commands to identify current settings and states of the CAL290 (refer to the Query Commands section located at the end of this appendix).

Pink Noise Generator Control

The following gives step-by-step instructions on how to remote control the CAL290 using Pink Noise Generator Control. To do this: Step 1 Place the state of instrument to pink noise generator state by issuing the Generator State command K. Command K Generator State Pink Noise

Step 2 Select an instrument mode setting by issuing one of the following commands: Command M0 M1 M2 M3 M4 M5 M6 M7 Instrument Mode Residual Intensity Intensity, 6 mm Intensity, 12 mm Intensity, 25 mm Intensity, 50 mm SPL Linear SPL A-weight SPL C-weight

NOTE: Whether in the 1/3 or 1/1 octave bandwidth mode, the pink noise spectrum is generated as a set of 1/3 octave bands and the value set by the remote command represents the level for all 1/3 octave bands. Thus, when the 1/1 octave bandwidth is selected, the level produced per octave band will be 4.8 dB higher than the level requested by the remote command.

Step 3 Select a frequency bandwidth by issuing one of the following commands: Command F0 F1 Frequency Bandwidth 1/1 1/3
