The first same-sex marriage ceremony in Brighton & Hove will take place just after midnight on Saturday, March 29, as soon as the law allows.
After hearing the news, Andrew said: "I feel so lucky to live in a country where human rights and equality are moving in the right direction, and in a city with such an impressive history of tolerance and inclusion. To be the first same-sex couple to have the opportunity to be married here is a great privilege. We are very excited to be a small part of this huge step forward." Neil added: As well as being the most iconic building in Sussex, the Royal Pavilion has become part of our personal iconography. This city will always be a special place for us because it's where we met and fell in love and the Pavilion is the heart of the city.

LGBT SAFETY FORUM TO ORGANISE 'ACCESS TENT' AT PRIDE 2014
) The Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum (LGBT CSF) will be organising and facilitating the Access Tent at this years Brighton Pride. It is the first time an LGBT organisation has provide the service for some years. Discussions are underway to finalise the improved service and these will be announced at a public meeting on Saturday, March 1 at 2pm at the Dorset Garden's Methodist Church, Dorset Gardens, Brighton. Joanna Rowland-Stuart said: As the disability representative of the LGBT Community Safety Forum and trans representative for REGARD, the LGBT disability charity, I am very happy the LGBT CSD is taking the lead on this project. The access tent is not just a meeting place for disabled visitors to Pride, for them it's also a refuge, a place to seek advice, to get help, First Aid and to report problems of any nature with their day at Pride, up to and including reporting hate crime incidents. Because of this, it is essential that the Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum take the lead in organising, promoting and publicising this facility, both to maximise its uptake by the disabled community at Pride but also to ensure that the access tent is fully effective and that the Forum itself is visible to the wider LGBT community. Billie Lewis, Chair of the LGBT CSF, added: Im delighted were able to provide this important service. Im hoping that the facility will not only benefit and empower those needing to use it but will remind the LGBT community that disabled people and the elderly are welcome at Pride and should be equally welcome throughout the LGBT scene. We will be working closely with other volunteer services to make sure the facility is as inclusive as possible. ) Neil Allard (left) and Andrew Wale (right) will become one of the first same-sex married couples in England. The pair will be married in the Music Room of the Royal Pavilion at one minute past midnight on Saturday, March 29. The ceremony will mark a first in the city and is also set to be one of the first same-sex marriages in the country. Trevor Love, Brighton & Hove City Councils senior ceremonies registrar, said: This will be a momentous and historic day for the Registration Service in England and Wales, and for all of those couples making their marriage vows together. Brighton & Hove is a popular location for ceremonies and we have been busy keeping people up to date with the latest news about the introduction of same-sex marriage. It is wonderful to see this law change being welcomed so enthusiastically in the city. Last December, when the Home Office announced the law would come into effect in March 2014, Brighton & Hove City Council was able to finalise plans to commemorate the date. The Register Office, in partnership with the Royal Pavilion, invited same-sex couples to apply to be the first to be married in the city. Couples were asked to explain why the Royal Pavilion is special for them and what it would mean to be married there in the citys first same-sex wedding ceremony. The chosen couple will not only become the first same-sex couple to marry in they city, they will also be the first late night ceremony in Brighton & Hove, as well the first wedding in the Music Room at the Royal Pavilion. Applications were considered by a panel including representatives from the Register Office, the Royal Pavilion and Councillor Leo Littman. All names and ages of the couples applying were removed before their comments were shared with the panel.
THE WINNING APPLICATION

Andrew and Neils application read: I am writing to apply for my partner and I to be the first same-sex couple to be married in Brighton, at the Royal Pavilion Music Room, on March 29, 2014. On March 3, we will have been together for seven years, and we can't think of any better way to celebrate than to publicly proclaim our love, and to make our commitment to one another legally binding, in one of the most beautiful and iconic settings in our home city. The Royal Pavilion provided the backdrop to our early dates - visits to the theatre, picnics in the gardens and strolls around the Pavilion itself - it continues to feature in our daily lives together. The Royal Pavilion is such a special place to us and is representative of so much of why we love Brighton & Hove - it's such a unique building, the design of which expresses a love of colour, contrast and individual taste. The building, and its creator, gave the city its reputation for free thinking and a shameless appreciation of pleasure which have fed the imaginations of its community and those of countless numbers of visitors over the decades. In previous years we had been planning to have a civil partnership, but decided to hold on when it became clear that the day might come when law changed to allow us to have a ceremony which brought us true equality. Were so happy, for ourselves and for the thousands of other committed same-sex couples that, that day is nearly here. To be the first same-sex couple to marry in Brighton would be an honour and a thrilling privilege. Although we would dearly love to have our ceremony in the Royal Pavilion, the fact that we are now allowed to marry at all is enough to counteract any disappointment we might feel if we are not chosen, and we would wish the lucky couple the most wonderful wedding.

THE RAINBOW FUND RECEIVES FIRST DONATION AND MAKES FIRST GRANT
) Last month the newly independent Rainbow Fund received its first donation from the Brighton Bear Weekender. The Rainbow Fund recently announced that it would transfer its account from the Sussex Community Foundation to establish itself as an independent group. The Brighton Bear Weekender kindly donated 235.44 from their Saints & Sinners evening at Subline in November 2013 to kick off the new fund. The Rainbow Fund also granted an unsolicited application from Older & Out to provide a small grant for an activity day at the Somerset Day Centre for 240.50 on Valentines Day. Older & Out works with older LGBT people through activity days to come together, have something to eat and socialise.
STONEWALL CHIEF EXECUTIVE STEPS DOWN

) Ben Summerskill has stepped down as Chief Executive of the lesbian, gay and bisexual equality charity after 11 years at the helm. His time as CEO saw a dramatic change in the legal landscape for LG&B people in Britain. During his tenure he led successful campaigns to secure legal equality for gay people in Britain, including the repeal of Section 28, goods and services protections, civil partnerships and marriage equality. Bens tenure also saw a transformation of the charity itself, taking it from one with just 20 staff and an annual income of 1.3 million, to an effective campaigning organisation of 75 full time staff with annual income in excess of 4.2 million, with improved governance and financial integrity including substantially augmented reserves in line with charity best practice. Ben said: Ive had a wonderful 11 years at Stonewall. As a charity, it comprises a constellation of staff and volunteers who, working together, have achieved remarkable things. The fact that Stonewalls Workplace Programme now engages the employers of 10m people and one in three local authorities in Britain now works with us to tackle homophobic bullying in schools is testament to some of the fantastic teamwork Ive been lucky enough to be involved with.

FIRST PRIDE 2014 AMBASSADOR NAMED

) The first Pride Ambassador to be elected for 2014 is Michael Nelson, better known as Michael Greenbeard. Michael, 71 years young and a very popular face on the commercial gay scene, is a former chef and antiques dabbler and has lived in Brighton with his partner Alan for the last 20 years. Michael said: In am honoured to have been voted to be a Pride Ambassador and thank everyone who nominated me. I will take my role very seriously and hope to illustrate to everyone how even a 71 year-old man can enjoy life to the full in this great city. Nominations were received for 20 different people. The remaining 19 will take their nominations forward to next months vote. BRIGHTON BEAR WEEKENDER ORGANISERS GIVE DONATION TO RAINBOW FUND GRANTS PANEL
Paul Elgood, Chairman of the Rainbow Fund, said: Were pleased to be fully operational again and looking to the future. Our time with the Sussex Community Foundation has given us an excellent start to now build on. Were grateful to the Brighton Bear Weekender who made the first donation of our new set-up. This is the third time that they have supported the Rainbow Fund and so it is fantastic to have their support again from the very start. The Grants Panel was pleased to approve a request from Older & Out for a small grant towards a Valentines activity day and lunch, and this continues our work supporting older LGBT people's groups such as GEMS. Whilst we will not be advertising a main grants round until the summer, we will occasionally consider urgent small applications such as this in the meantime, if an exceptional case is made and if funds are available. As part of its new structure and to insure a fully transparent approach, the Rainbow Fund is in the process of recruiting an Independent Treasurer and will be advertising for two more Independent members of the Grants Panel in due course. ) Surely the most frequently asked question when it comes to Pride. James Brooks, lead contributor for Pride Matters, said:Given the huge improvement in equalities over the last decade with protections written into law and a legal recognition of our relationships, then it is understandable that some people, including those within the LGBT community, might think that weve won the fight for freedom. However, dig a little deeper, keep an eye on the news, read some of the comments on news websites, and it becomes clear that there is still a long way to go within the UK and abroad. This years umbrella campaigning theme for Brighton Pride is Freedom to Live. Organisers wants to know why Pride still matters to people in 2014. BRIGHTON GAY MENS CHORUS RAISE NEARLY 6,000

) Brighton Gay Mens Chorus Pull A Cracker Christmas show raised a staggering 5,713.40 for the Sussex Beacon. For the third year running, the choir made a triumphant return to the Brighton Dome for a packed-out festive December evening, which featured the actress Claire Sweeney and was supported by their new sponsor Co-operative Funeralcare, Paul Charlton, Chairman of Brighton Gay Mens Chorus, said: Thanks so much to everyone for your continued support. We really pulled out all the stops in December to deliver as entertaining a show as we could! We also have a number of other exciting plans that we hope to announce in the near future, and are delighted once again to help raise money for such a worthy local cause.

LIKE PLAYING CRIBBAGE?

) A new card school is starting at the ABar every Tuesday evening. Whether youre a card novice, an expert, or want to learn, just pop along to the A-Bar on Tuesday nights at 7.30pm. The cribbage evening is open to men and women, young and old. Cribbage, or crib, is a card game traditionally for two players, but commonly played with three, four, or more, and involves playing and grouping cards in combinations to gain points. Cribbage has several distinctive features: the cribbage board used for score keeping, the eponymous crib or box (a separate hand counting for the dealer), two distinct scoring stages (the play and the show) and a unique scoring system including points for groups of cards that total fifteen. ) The first official Brighton Bears Weekender (BBWE14) fundraiser event of the year takes place at the Camelford Arms, Camelford Street on Thursday, March 6; secure a table at 7.30pm, quiz starts at 9pm, The weekly Thursday quiz night at the Camelford is always busy and BBWE14 organisers promise they will be adding a bit of ursine flavour to the BBWE14 Quiz Night along with a raffle which includes some naughty prizes. Why not make up a team, join a team or play on your own and help the bears raise money for the Rainbow Fund, a grant giving fund that makes grants to local LGBT/HIV organisations providing front line services to LGBT people in Brighton & Hove. Last year the Brighton Bears Weekender was the second largest contributor to the Rainbow Fund after Brighton Pride, and this year they plan to do much better with your help. The main event organised by BBWE14 is the Brighton Bear Weekend 2014 which takes place between June 20-22. Join the bears for a weekend of fun, sun and fur by the seaside! Five years on at Doctor Brighton's and a pledge to raise 10,000 for charity
) Five years ago Charles Childs bought Doctor Brighton's and along with his two managers Wayne Durant and Anthony van-Room he has created one of the most popular venues on the seafront attracting a mixed, up for a party, clientele. Charles has seen the business grow steadily each year, building a solid reputation around their regular Friday and Saturday nights featuring resident DJs Tony B, Nick Hurst and Adam Rice. Last year they successfully introduced live music to the venue with Anna Sin and the Jukebox Bandits. Charles said: My ethos has been always to provide a welcoming environment offering good quality service and a fun packed experience for everyone. Last year we refurbished the exterior of the bar which was long overdue. This January we refurbished both the gents and the ladies toilets and we have plans for more improvements in the near future. He has created a party function area in the bar, which includes both bay windows and the pool area where birthdays, anniversaries and wedding receptions are hosted. Balloons, banners and shots are all provided compliments of the venue. To mark Dr Brighton's five year anniversary Charles has personally pledged to raise 10,000 for charities close to his heart. He continued: I really want to give back to the Brighton community which has given me so much support and also to Macmillan Cancer Sussex nursing. They start their fundraising ventures at their fifth birthday party on Saturday, March 8 starting at 6pm with live music from Anna Sin and then DJ Adam Rice plays an 80s set. There will be a charity auction with donations from local businesses and then a further set from Anna Sin before DJ Tony B takes to the decks and gets everyone up and ready for a late night party. For this special night there will be a 10 entry charge on the door if you arrive at 6.30pm. You will get a mouth tingling chilli con carne with rice, and a glass of bubbly. Alternatively you can join them later in the evening for DJ Tony B when the entry fee is 5 and includes a free drink and a shot. Charles will also be introducing and launching his team for Tough Mudder, which is a hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle course designed by the special forces to test overall strength, stamina, determination and camaraderie, with only 78% of entrants successfully completing each section. If youre committed and interested contact Charles at the bar along with any ideas for fundraising you have that will help him reach his target of 10,000. Charles concluded: I envisage that this year will be action packed with fun and lots of exciting events. Id like to say a massive thank you to all of our customers and friends for their unrelenting support over the last 5 years and I hope that all our regulars will come and join me for a glass of bubbles on me to celebrate the past 5 years and help me kick off my fundraising adventure for the year.

BRIGHTON GAY MENS CHORUS SINGERS TO RUN IN THE BRIGHTON MARATHON
) Adam Betteridge and Silvio Grasso, two of the trustees for registered charity Brighton Gay Mens Chorus, will be running in the Brighton Marathon on April 6 to raise funds for the choir. Neither have run a marathon yet, and its fair to say both are anxious and excited about the prospect. Adam said: Were absolutely thrilled to be helping raise funds for such an amazing charity as Brighton Gay Mens Chorus. The choir is really engaged in the local community, providing a safe supportive space for gay and gay-friendly men to meet whilst also learning how to sing. Im also running in memory of my dear niece Sophie, who learned how to walk despite the experts telling us she never would, but who tragically died last May aged just 16 years old. Silvio Grasso, who will be donating 50% of the funds he raises to MindOut, said: As well as putting on great fun shows, the chorus has also helped raise lots of money for other local charities including Lunch Positive, the Sussex Beacon and the Rainbow Fund in recent times. Its also true that the training has been incredibly gruelling what with the recent weather so please do dig deep and help us! Paul Charlton, Chairman of Brighton Gay Mens Chorus, added: Were extremely grateful to Adam and Silvio for their support. This is the first time weve had anyone raise money for us by running in the Brighton Marathon. Fundraising efforts like this will make a huge difference to our members in helping us continue with our charitable and community work. Please support Adam and Silvio!
SUN SHINES FOR THE BRIGHTON HALF MARATHON

Following days of strong winds and heavy rain, the sun shone on the Brighton Half Marathon last month.
) The Brighton Half Marathon is organised by the Sussex Beacon, a local HIV charity, and saw 6,996 runners on the start line with Paul Martelletti and Sarah Hill claiming the winning titles. Thousands of spectators lined the streets of Brighton & Hove to cheer on the runners and to show their support for the event. Paul Martelletti (Victoria Park Harriers / Run-fast) took the lead from the start and successfully defended his title from 2013 by finishing in a time of 01:05:52, over one minute ahead of runner up Tom Aldred of London Heathside and over a minute and half faster than his winning time last year. In a sprint finish Paolo Natali of ATL Firenze Marathon beat Kevin Rojas of Brighton & Hove AC and secured 3rd place in a time of 01:08:08. Sarah Hill of Farnham Runners dominated the womens field and secured the win in a time of 01:18:43, ahead of Deidre McDermott who crossed the finish line in 01:20:15. Claire Grima of Hercules Wimbledon came third in a time of 01:20:45. The 1 mile Youth Races, which started and finished at the same point as the main race, saw 393 young runners of all levels and abilities take
part across four age categories, with the biggest number of runners in the 710 years of age category. The Brighton Half Marathon is organised by and is the main fundraising event for the Sussex Beacon, a local HIV charity working to improve health, reduce stigma and prevent premature death. Other charity partners included Scope (National Charity Partner) alongside WaterAid (International Charity Partner) and Rise (Local Charity Partner). BRIGHTON GAY MENS CHORUS WELCOME LUNCH POSITIVE LGBT CHOIRS FROM DUBLIN AND LONDON WORKSHOPS
) Brighton Gay Mens Chorus were thrilled when around 25 members of Gloria, Dublins biggest LGBT choir, and Londons Pink Singers, the UKs original LGBT choir, dropped in for a visit. With a delicious lunch served up by volunteers from Lunch Positive, the choir members forged friendships and swapped stories before joining together to rehearse a few verses from well known Kylie hit I Should Be So Lucky. Connections between the choirs were strengthened last year when all of the British and Irish LGBT choirs were invited to take part in the Hand In Hand Festival, which took place in London last June to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Pink Singers.
) Lunch Positive will host two benefits advice workshops for people with HIV during March, which will be run by Tim Procter from THT and held at Dorset Gardens Methodist Church: Personal Independent Payments: Friday, March 7, 24.30pm Employment & Support Allowance: Friday, March 14, 24.30pm The government has made key changes to the main benefits for sick and disabled claimants. Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is being replaced with Personal Independence Payments (PIP). All DLA claimants will be required to undergo a new assessment to transfer from DLA to PIP from 2015. If you are experiencing health problems and want to find out how to qualify for PIP this workshop will tell you. Employment & Support Allowance (ESA) has a difficult Personal Capability Assessment requiring claimants to fill an ESA50 form which may be followed by a medical examination. These assessments need to be repeated for most claimants annually. Both PIP and ESA have hidden tests with a point scoring system. Learning about the underlying tests and point scoring can help claimants approach the assessment with more confidence and help them decide what issues they need to raise. Richard Jeneway, Peer Action trustee, said: We have been so pleased how the existing therapy event in the city has worked for the HIV community. This has inspired some peers to learn new and develop new skills in the massage and therapy field. We have been in discussion with the Beacon for a while now to set up this additional service which is aimed primarily at the Beacon's service users but sessions will also be available for the wider HIV community. This is an area of work that Peer Action does well with now proven statistics showing the benefits safe space, low cost therapies can have on those with HIV or affected by HIV. The great thing about this new service is that we are able to maintain low costs to the service users making the sessions affordable. This is because of Rainbow Fund funding in conjunction with Lottery funding. Price for a therapy session is 5 but free for those people who are staying at the Beacons inpatient unit. All Peer Action activities are organised and run by volunteers who generously give their time to ensure best quality activities and health related events. ) Peer Action, the peer led HIV organisation that provides social and recreational opportunities to people with HIV, are extending their popular monthly Therapy & Massage Day to also take place at the Sussex Beacon starting Sunday, March 16. All therapies will be administered by one of Peer Action's pool of 'peer therapists' who are fully qualified and insured. The Sussex Beacon is a fantastic location and fully accessible for relaxing therapies.
Paul Charlton, Chairman for Brighton Gay Mens Chorus, said: Building relationships with other LGBT choirs is crucial as we continue to grow as a choir we can all learn so much from each other and have a great time as well! ) Lunch Positive, the HIV charity that provides a healthy meal to HIV positive people every Friday at Dorset Gardens Methodist Church, has published its new calendar of visits from other voluntary and community organisations. The HIV community space, which is centred around the lunch club, invites guests who are available to provide additional advice, information and support. The visits are informal and inclusive. Guests join with members and volunteers for lunch and are available to talk and help where needed. Gary Pargeter, volunteer project manager, said: We've been working with guest visits for some time and the emphasis is on having friendly, approachable people available to help if needed. For many people simply being with peers at the lunch club addresses a whole range of needs. We also know that many people find themselves in crisis, are sometimes anxious about accessing other services, and also have an interest in finding out about what other support is available. Guests from other organisations have helped many people and getting to know their workers or volunteers in a community setting often feels much easier for people. One person recently told us I can't thank you enough - there's nowhere I could go where I've been able to get involved in so many things. We're also grateful that guests from visiting organisations often support their own clients to come along to Lunch Positive for first visits. On March 4, 1974, a handful of volunteers answered the very first phone calls in a small room at Housman's radical bookshop in King's Cross. The helpline's phones havent stopped ringing since.
WISEUP! A NEW LGBTINCLUSIVE CAMPAIGN

) The WiSE Project are launching WiSEup, a new campaign for spring 2014, to raise awareness about sexual exploitation for LGBT people. The campaign, which has received funding from the Sussex Police Community Cashback aims to raise awareness about sexual exploitation as well as promoting referral and reporting pathways. The campaign has been developed with youth-consultation for LGBT and nonLGBT venues.
) London Lesbian & Gay Switchboard (LLGS) turns 40 years old in March, with a programme of celebrations and community events to commemorate its achievements at the heart of Britain's LGBT community over four decades. Joe Lee, co-Chair of LLGS, said: The LGBT community stands at a crossroads.We have achieved so much in terms of legal rights, civil partnerships, employment, services and the ability of LGBT people to simply live their lives as they want to do, and have always wanted to do. We have come a long, and wonderful, way in 40 years that our founders would be very happy to see." He added: "But there is still a long way to go as many LGBT people still face difficulties: discrimination at work, within their families or communities, a lack of acceptance and even homophobic violence. The way the LGBT community is developing is also important for instance, sexual health needs a renewed focus as more sexual activity migrates to online meetings. Even though our calls have changed over 40 years, many people - young and old - want the vital support of a helpful person on the end of the line to talk to at important times of their lives." Ruth Turner, volunteer and trustee, said: We started as an organisation in 1974 aimed at relieving the suffering of gay people, under our initial charity status, which reflects the attitudes of the times. Now, though life has moved on - in no small part owing to the efforts of our volunteers over 40 years - we still need to be there to offer a helping hand at all the important points of LGBT people's lives. We offer calm words when people need them most. Lee added: As the demand for our service shows, there is still a real need among the LGBT community for a confidential helpline on which people can talk about all the issues that concern us, from coming out to going out, from sexuality to sexual health, from relationships to work life. Some people are isolated by their circumstances, because of where they live or their age or their personal life, and we are a vital lifeline for anyone feeling under pressure or just needing to talk to someone neutral. Sometimes people are having problems with their family, their job, their relationship, or they want information on sexual health. Or sometimes they just phone us for a chat! Based in London, LLGS acts as a national helpline, open from 10am-11pm every day, throughout the year, taking calls from all over the country and an increasing number of callers from abroad.
LLGS HAS PLAYED A CENTRAL ROLE IN THE STRUGGLE FOR LGBT RIGHTS:
The helpline was the first to bring together lesbians and gay men in a single organisation; They provided the very first source of information on HIV-AIDS in the early 1980s; Volunteers from LLGS went on to start up a variety of other household-name charities including the National AIDS Trust and the Terrence Higgins Trust; LLGS was a leader in giving information on sexual health, and still performs that vital function today. Today, LLGS has more than 180 volunteers, and has helped more than 3.2m callers, through the phone line and in recent years also through email, its internet site and instant messaging. The organisation is still led and run entirely by volunteers, with just one paid administrator, and holds true to its co-operative roots. Its voluntary structure, almost unique among charities of its size, means costs are minimal and all of the money raised goes straight to answering the phones. Switchboard's volunteers are all highly trained to be able to listen, offer support, give referrals and be a friend at the other end of the phone. They do not give advice, they do not tell people what to do, they do not pass judgement and are entirely confidential. Volunteers answer 15,000 calls a year on a budget of about 75.000, much of which is raised from the community and all of which goes to the costs of running the phone lines and its online counterparts. Their costs are minimal because all of the work, from staffing the phone lines to providing IT support to fundraising, is done by volunteers - with help from the paid administrator. LLGS was a "big society" organisation decades before the term was coined, as a long line of volunteers have staffed the helpline in all its roles: some have stayed for several decades, helping to guide the organisation, and others have gone on to vital roles in other charities. Many have continued to have an association with the charity, helping to foster a sense of the LGBT community. In recognition of its vitally important role in bettering the lives of LGBT people, and anyone who needs to consider LGBT issues, the organisation has received a number of awards including the Whitbread Volunteer Action Award, the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service and most recently a shortlisting for the Prime Minister's Big Society award. For more information, view: www.llgs.org.uk The WiSE Project has carried out participatory workshops with LGBTU young people at Allsorts Youth Project to design innovative and interactive campaign materials and badges, which will be featured in venues across the LGBT scene. LGBTU young people can face additional challenges to their straight, cisgender peers. These challenges can include a lack of acceptance from family or friends or experiencing homo/bi/transphobic bullying. In addition, many LGBTU young people do not receive appropriate education and advice around sex and relationships. These factors can compound and increase LGBTU young peoples vulnerability to sexual exploitation. Alongside the awareness raising campaign materials, the WiSE Project will be delivering training to people that work professionally within the night time economy, such as doorpeople, club and pub workers, hotel reception staff, in order to increase awareness of how to identify exploitative situations and report appropriately. ) During December 2013, members from the Metropolitan Community Church in Brighton collected towels for the Sussex Beacon. Rev Michael Hydes, pastor of MCC in Brighton, said: We collected enough towels so that every room would have at least three sets. This means that clean fresh towels are always available for rooms, and that towels are also available for physical therapy sessions when they are needed.

) Casey Stoney, the Arsenal Ladies defender, told BBC sport that she made her decision following the positive public reaction to Olympic diver Tom Daleys coming out. She said that while she no longer wanted to live a lie, her sexuality was always known and accepted in footballing circles. I feel it's really important for me to speak out as a gay player because there are so many people struggling who are gay, and you hear about people taking their own lives because they are homosexual. That should never happen. How can I expect other people to speak about themselves if I'm not willing to do that myself? Casey thinks world governing body Fifa set the wrong example by awarding the World Cup to Russia and Qatar: I won't be going to Russia or Qatar to watch a World Cup because I wouldn't be accepted there. I think it's incredible that these countries get World Cups and Olympics when they don't accept everybody to go there and be part of it. There will be [Olympic] athletes competing out [in Russia] who are gay. I can't imagine how frightened they must feel going out there and competing. When Russian President Vladimir Putin says that gay people can come over but please don't go near the children, what sort of message is that sending if he is that uneducated and he's ruling that country? It seriously worries me. It's about educating the people at the top, all the way down.

) American college footballer Michael Sam came out in an interview with ESPN's Outside the Lines. Sam, a defensive lineman with the Missouri Tigers, said: Its a load of my chest. He confirmed he had told his teammates last August: They took it great, rallied round me, supported me and I couldnt ask for better teammates. At present there are no openly gay American football, baseball, hockey or basketball players playing in the US and Sam's decision to come out is unique for a young sportsman as high profile sports people in the past who chose to come out did so after they had retired. He said he wanted to own the trust and make an announcement before any newspaper chose to out him. He said he didnt want to be defined as
The NFL released a statement supporting Sam, with Greg Aiello, NFLs senior vice president of communications, saying: We admire Michael Sam's honesty and courage. Michael is a football player. Any player with ability and determination can succeed in the NFL. We look forward to welcoming and supporting him in 2014. He came out to his parents during a phone call: I told my mom and dad, and they just pretty much said we knew and we love you and support you. I'm their baby boy. I'm the first to go to college. I'm the first to graduate college. Something like this is just another milestone. Sam said he understood that his life was about to change forever and was happy and proud to be speaking out at last: I'm not afraid to tell the world who I am. EXETER CITY FOOTBALL CLUB SAY NO! TO HOMOPHOBIA

) Exeter City Football Club took a stand against homophobia in football at a home game with Rochdale on Saturday, February 22. The match was designated as the clubs annual Football v Homophobia fixture a move welcomed by the Exeter City Supporters Trust and its One Game One Community (OGOC) Group. The OGOC Group organised a series of initiatives at the match working in partnership with the Devon Lions, the local gay-friendly football club. The anti-homophobia campaign has been backed by Exeter Citys OGOC Ambassador, first team goalkeeper Artur Krysiak, who said: Football should be a game for all to enjoy. There is no place for prejudice and discrimination Also supporting the special focus on opposing homophobia is Alan Quick, south west co-ordinator for Football v Homophobia, founding trustee of Exeter Pride and a member of the Exeter City OGOC Group. Alan said: It is really positive to see Exeter City taking such a principled stance. Everyone, be they player, official, employee or fan, should be free to be themselves. Exeter City takes a firm stand against things like inappropriate chanting or hateful or prejudiced language, which is to be congratulated." Exeter Citys OGOC is part of the national Kick it Out campaign which aims to address all types of discrimination in football including race, disability, gender, age and sexual orientation. ) After taking a break from league football in the Gay Football Supporters Network league this season, GFC Brighton & Hove (formerly called the Brighton Bandits) are rebuilding the team with a focus on its LGBT grassroots. BLAGSS PRIDE HOUSE IN HOVE

) BLAGSS, the LGBT sport group, created a Pride House at the Grosvenor Bar last month during the Winter Olympics at Sochi. During the evening those present held hands in support of the Same Sex Hand Holding Initiative (#SSHHI). #SSHHI was launched by Pride House International on August 14, 2013 and called on everyone in Sochi - athletes, staff, media, officials, spectators, sponsors, vendors and fans - to take every opportunity to hold hands with a person of the same sex during their time in the city. To make as many people present in Sochi aware of #SSHHI, Pride House International launched a photo blog at http://holdhandsinsochi.tumblr.com where anyone could post a photo showing themselves holding hands with a person of the same sex as a sign of solidarity with everybody who held hands throughout the Sochi games. A Pride House is a venue welcoming LGBT athletes, fans and their allies during international sporting events to learn about LGBT sport and homophobia in sport and to build relations with mainstream sports. The first Pride House was organised for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic games in Vancouver/Whistler followed by others in Warsaw for the 2012 UEFA Euro Football Championships and London for the 2012 Summer Olympics/Paralympics. Pride Houses are planned for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the 2015 Pan-American Games in Toronto and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Sadly the Russian authorities banned any Pride House in Sochi during the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Subsequently, in 2012, he co-founded My Genderation, www.mygenderation.tumbr.com, a documentary series about gender variation. My Genderation has been featured on BBC Fresh, and this year, he is working with Channel 4 to produce 25 new films, in conjunction with All About Trans / On Road Media (www.allabouttrans.org). Fox's work was acknowledged with Lewis Hancox on the Independents Pink List. He creates fine-art screen prints (www.salutehq.com) and designs for the queer community, including Queer In Brighton, Trans* Pride, the Just Like You campaign, FTM Brighton, Allsorts Tagfest and the photobook Being Human; Human Being. He is also creator of the Queer Observer logo, and part of the www.thequeerobserver.com team. In 2013 Fox helped to set up the first Trans*Pride in Brighton and is again part of the core team for 2014. Additionally, he appeared on the front cover of META magazine, the UKs first trans* publication. Fox continues to liaise with the mainstream media to raise awareness of trans* issues, chatting with Daybreak, LBC radio, The Observer, the Daily Mail, the BBC and is also transsexual and genderqueer editor for Cliterati (www.cliterati.co.uk/the-cliterati/). The council's Trans Equality Scrutiny recommended that sport and leisure activities should be made more accessible to trans* people resulting in the setting up of trans-inclusive swimming sessions. The sessions take place at Brighton Swimming Centre every Friday between 8-9.30pm till April 11 (but excluding March 28). If the classes are popular they can continue indefinitely. Brighton Swimming Centre has both private and communal changing facilities and all staff have received trans* awareness training. Sessions are 2.55, subsidised from the usual rate of 4.30.

) To mark the opening day of competition at the Winter Olympics in Sochi last month, protesters in Brighton highlighted the plight of LGBT people in Russia. More than 200 people turned out in dreadful weather to support the To Russia With Love demonstration at the Clock Tower on Queens Road. The

) Ray Gregory and Paul Wills, life partners of ten years, opened Gregorys, their new coffee shop, bakers and takeaway in October of last year. Ray has worked in catering all his life as well as being a full time carer to his mother. He now lives between his home in Oxford and the flat he shares with Paul in Brighton. He previously had four coffee shops in London in Hounslow, Ealing, Richmond and Kingston upon Thames but the pressures of running four businesses led to him and Paul not seeing much of each other. They both love Brighton and visited the city over the years to attend Pride. Paul suggested getting a shop in Brighton so Ray bought a shop for Paul to manage and somewhere where they could both live and spend more time together. Paul has left his home in Olney, Bucks where he lived with his parents to live full time in Brighton, while Ray continues to live between Brighton and Oxford. Ray and Paul are enjoying the Brighton gay scene. Ray said: Opening the shop in Brighton has been very special for us not only as another challenge for me personally, but we are making hundreds of new friends from all the communities in Kemp Town. We are being accepted and we are proud to be part of a busy High St. So far we have had a productive first four months, everything seems to be going very well and we are getting a lot of support from everyone in the community." In the past, with his other businesses, Ray helped local community groups and charities such as epilepsy and multiple sclerosis by raising money for them and supporting their events. He is looking forward to doing the same for Brightons LGBT organisations in the future. Ray continued: We offer a loyalty card scheme and welcome feedback though our Facebook page or better still, direct to us. With Pauls experience in retail and customer service it works well for us at the shop. Following the speeches the protestors moved along Western Road to McDonalds, one of the main sponsors of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, who have refused to speak out about the persecution of LGBT people in Russia.
LOCAL LICENSEES REMOVE COCACOLA PRODUCTS FROM THEIR BARS

) Licensees Adam Brooks and his partner Tony made a personal stand against the refusal of Coca-Cola to speak out about the basic human rights being denied to LGBT people in Russia last month. They removed all Coca-Cola products from their shelves following the deafening silence from one of the headline sponsors of the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. Adam runs the Bedford Tavern on the border of Hove and Tony runs the Brighton Tavern in Gloucester Road, Brighton. Adam wrote in an email to other licensees of gay venues in Brighton: This small gesture from two backstreet Brighton pubs is certainly not going to have the giant that is Coca-Cola worried. However, this small act can snowball. What if every gay/gay friendly venue in Brighton followed suit? That would start a ripple. Perhaps London gay venues would jump on board this could easily spread and that is when Coca-Cola would take notice. Were not activists; were just trying to do the right thing. If you feel your venue can do something similar to help make a difference, NOW is the time to do it.

) Betty La La's restaurant in St James Street reopened with a full house sitting on Valentines Night after being closed all January for a refit and refurbishment. Betty's will now be open lunch times from TuesdaySunday, noonlate. While the tried and tested main menu remains, a new lunch menu has been introduced along with a new vegetarian menu, a new burger menu and some sharing platters which come with a carafe of wine. I hope you dont mind me writing but I felt I had to highlight something. Since its creation The Rainbow Fund has been a wonderful tool to centralise local funding for the LGBT community here in Brighton and Hove. I myself along with my peers and fellow entertainers have been a great supporter of this approach, along with many others including Pride and the Brighton Bear Weekender. I feel its so important to raise the profile of the Rainbow fund and what it does in Brighton for all the different groups, specially as government funding is always being cut. After all, if we dont look after ourselves who will? There are always some people who give to charity, quietly, with no fuss, like for instance Tony Chapman from Legends, who not only supports the Sussex Beacon and The Rainbow Fund, he is one of the only businesses who helps Pride with sponsorship, along with many other events and causes. He donates privately with a personal cheque when Legends have fundraisers, without any fuss or glory. Not all people are like Tony. So my point is I think we should be promoting the Rainbow Fund more for all its hard work and making sure we secure a brighter future for all the recipients of the the grants because without it (and everyone who gives to charity) Brighton would not be the Gay Capital of the UK. SHORTAGE OF ADOPTERS AND FOSTER CARERS

There are around 90,000 children in care across the UK, 6,000 of whom need to be adopted. However, there is a desperate shortage of both adopters and foster carers. Thousands more people are needed to give these vulnerable children a secure and loving home and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) adopters and foster carers are welcomed. Through our work at the British Association for Adoption & Fostering (BAAF) we know that members of the LGBT community make fantastic parents and that children in their care flourish. 20 GSCENE An initial application form was completed and a date was agreed for our first visit from the allocated social worker. As someone who had grown up in the care system in the 1970s and 80s I was convinced that our social worker would be useless, rude and incompetent. I knew they would be, I had first hand experience of them and I knew all social workers were the same. How wrong I was; our social worker was fun, friendly and full of hope for our application, it was a surprising but pleasing start to the journey. Weve been parents now for the last 19 months. Starting off as foster carers to an incredible young girl of seven, were now her full on, full time legal parents after being approved by the adoption panel at the end of last year. Seven months into our time as new parents we were joined by our son. He is six years old, a complete star and were currently going through the adoption assessment process for him too.

Being a parent is great fun! Watching them grow physically, mentally and emotionally, truly is an amazing thing to witness and be a part of. Syd Spencer talks about his experience of becoming a parent through fostering and adoption.
) Being a parent is scary. Being a part of a childs life who has already experienced extreme neglect, harm and abuse is hard, the anger and hatred that they may have for adults and towards themselves is very difficult to witness, especially when it is in your home. Being a parent to a damaged child and watching them grow, to learn to trust, to unload their fears and to smile with warmth in their eyes is amazing! It's a great thing to be the adult in their life who teaches them that adults can be safe, that adults shouldn't treat them badly, that adults should offer them love without creating fear or abusing them. This is without doubt the greatest thing that any adult, that you, that I, can offer a child. things that youd forgotten, happy memories will be given new life and your self belief will grow as your allocated social worker works with you. Your sexuality is not something that will go against you. Yes, you being homosexual, bisexual, transgender or heterosexual will be discussed, as will your health, your diet, your religious views and your support network. None of this will be done in an attempt to trip you up, its purely to find out more about you, to see if you can bring up a child, if you have the strength, love, sense of humour and indeed common sense to do the job, after all we are talking about a child's life here so everything needs to be explored. Its important to remember that the social services want you to succeed, they are on your side, but if its decided that you arent suitable then youll be informed as soon as it has become apparent and the reason will be discussed. One thing that became clear throughout our assessment was that it isn't nearly as bad as wed first feared. When we decided to make the initial telephone call to a fostering agency we were terrified, a night void of sleep but full of questions had only added to our anxiety but we were very relieved when our enquiry was met with warmth and encouragement.
So, there you are, reading our story and recognising in yourself that you too could offer a safe, nurturing home and life for a child or two. But where do you start? Who do you contact? This can really depend on the type of child you wish to foster or adopt. Its very rare these days to foster or adopt a baby. A lot of work is done these days to keep babies with their birth families and to put in the appropriate support. The age of children in the care of local authorities, who are looking for a family, can be as young as two years old and will go right up into the early teens. There are many fostering and adoption agencies who offer excellent support for the carer or new parent. See below for some contact details to help you out. ) As we took the taxi from the Don Mueang, the low cost terminal at Bangkok, haze hovered over the city. Whilst we wonderered if this was smog, the lady taxi driver assured us No, this is winter weather. I wasnt convinced. Im not alone. Supat Wangwongwatana, secretary of the Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia, is also not convinced. The levels of carbon monoxide and an increasing ozone hanging over Bangkok ensure that clear days are less likely these days. Dont let that put you off though for a trip to Bangkok as this gay holiday destination is for the 3 Ss. Actually its for one big fat S forget Sun and Sand. No trip to Bangkok would be complete without tasting some of the classic delights that Bangkok has to offer. Bars for people watching, karaoke, massage, cabaret and disco, Bangkok has it all. the staff friendly and helpful. But, sorry to say I found the female breakfast staff less helpful, and carpets throughout were shabby and in need of replacing. On the positive side, the extra that I really liked was that on checking in they give you a set of personalised cards with your name and the hotels address. Useful to give someone you like or to show the taxi driver the way back to your hotel. Couple that with a daily delivery of a piece of fruit, and we have some nice touches. Another thing I liked is the security. Theres no problem about having guests, but they must register at reception on entry. When they leave, the receptionist will call you in your room to check that everything is okay. Theres also a friendly security officer at the elevator. Security in Bangkok is an important issue, and shouldnt be under estimated.

Diagonally opposite Telephone Bar is Balcony Pub (www.balconypub.com), a highly rated site with a Metro Magazine High Fives Award. You can drink, play videos and connect to the internet. Whilst the locals attached to the bars and spas are young, and the clientele much older or even of retirement age, the bear community also has its niche bar at Bearibie Karaoke, opposite the Telephone Bar. As the name suggests it is a karaoke bar patronised by the bear community. At Soi Boytown, theres Hotmale, Hotmale 2, Maxis, Bangkok Boys and Dream Boys on one side of the street, and Future Boy, Dicks Caf, Bunnys Massage, plus a few go-go bars on the other side. Sit outside Maxis and watch the young masseurs of Massage Bangkok sit outside waiting for clients. Watch out too for door touts who will try to guide you into their clubs. Some much pushier than others.

There are many massage parlours. Some are conventional ones offering services such as foot massage, but for a more intimate experience there are so many to choose from. You pay for two things - the massage service which goes to the establishment and the tip for the masseur. Tips generally range from a minimum of 500 Bahts (9.25) up to 1,000 Bahts (18.50). Make sure you establish the prices, including tips, before accepting any type of service. Tarntawan Massage is adjacent to Tarntawan Place and a 90 minute body massage costs 750 Bahts (14), not including the tip. One spa and massage venue heavily advertised as the newest and largest is The Prince (www.theprincebkk.com) in Sathom Soi 3.
Local guides
Tarntawan Place is located between the gay street area of Soi Boytown and Soi 4. Soi Boytown is a street off the other side of the road of Surawong Road, whereas Soi 4 is off Silom Road which runs parallel to Surawong Road. To help get your bearings, head off to the legendary Telephone Bar in Soi 4. From there, besides eyeing up the guys strutting down the street, you can pick up a useful free GM guide which lists all the where to go places. The mythical Babylon (www.babylonbangkok.com) is well renowned and more of a high class fitness centre, which also doubles as a hotel. On ground level theres a swimming pool with lounge chairs and gym, with a restaurant and a bar looking out onto the pool. Theres a small sauna and dark steam room as well as cold showers on this level. Walk up one level to the snack bar, changing rooms, hot showers and a small dark maze with cabins. The top floor is reserved for massage and a barber shop. Its clean and frequented by the 3050 age group. You can train those muscles in the gym, show off those muscles around the pool or be a sleaze bag its your choice. Other saunas to check out include Chakran, Men Factory, Troy and 39 Sauna. Live sex shows exist: Tawan Bar (www.tawanbarbangkok.com/eng) has muscle guys penetrating a she-male doing a helicopter routine. The mind boggles. This is just round the corner from Tarntawan Place (go left and then first left). If youre looking for a disco, visit DJ Station (www.dj-station.com). Most discos are on the street three roads down parallel to Soi 4.

Apart from the bars, clubs, go-go bars, massage parlours, spas, saunas and live sex shows, you may actually want to see another side of what Bangkok has to offer. Typical tourist trips include canal trips stopping off at the temples and visiting a snake farm, and there are excursions to see elephants. Thai boxing is world famous so a trip to the boxing ring may be of interest. Apart from this, there is plenty of shopping to do in the streets as the street markets seem to bring the place alive selling anything from Singha Beer singlets to wrap around panda salt and pepper pots. You can even get a made to measure suit, which will be posted on to you afterwards.
When to visit...
) Temperatures range from 2232C in December to 2736C in April. So no matter when you go, you can expect a pleasant climate. What differs is the amount of rainfall. Rainy season is from MayOctober, with most falling in September. With this in mind, between November and April would seem the best time to visit Bangkok. Even so the humidity levels are over 70%, even in the dry season.

Final Report
Following his election, Mike campaigned to have squatting in residential properties criminalised, with the backing of Justice Minister Kenneth Clarke. The campaign was successful and led to a provision in the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 creating a new offence which has been labelled by opponents Weatherley's Law. He has an interest in protecting intellectual property rights and is a member of the AllParty Parliamentary Intellectual Property Group. In 2010, he launched a national music competition, Rock the House, one of the main objectives of which is to highlight intellectual property rights. The campaign has gained support from musicians such as Alice Cooper. Mike campaigned against the repeal of the Hunting Act 2004 and pledged to vote against any measure which would lead to the ban being overturned. He has also campaigned against the implementation of the proposed ban on the retail display of tobacco products arguing that it would damage trade for small businesses. He is Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Business & Retail Crime, along with various other APPGs and is a VicePresident of the Debating Group and a supporter of the Free Enterprise Group. Since his election Mike has shown support for his LGBT residents across the board in Brighton & Hove, supporting Pride and World AIDS Day while helping raise awareness of the importance of HIV testing. He fully supported the Same-Sex Marriage campaign and has highlighted gay rights abuses abroad.

) While Brighton Kemptown is seen nationally as Brighton's 'gay area', Mike Weatherley's Hove & Portslade constituency has more than its fair share of gay couples and like Saltdean to the East of Brighton, Portslade in the West is becoming an area of choice for many single gay people because of property prices in the area, which are much lower than the inflated prices demanded in central Brighton. tackling HIV where he highlighted the dangers of HIV to those from supposedly low risk groups. Mike supported THT's HIV Testing Week and has taken a number of HIV tests in Parliament to help draw attention to the importance of getting tested and help raise general awareness of HIV. One of the most significant LGBT issues for Mike in Parliament has been to highlight the inequality that existed before the recent Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act became law. Back in 2011, before the Government made an announcement on its commitment to Same-Sex Marriage, Mike highlighted to the Prime Minister that Civil Partnerships still left an inherent inequality for LGBT couples in Britain and needed to change. He welcomed the Governments commitment to introducing Same-Sex Marriage and voted for the measure in the House of Commons. He has written to his colleague the Rt Hon William Hague MP, Foreign Secretary, to highlight the plight of LGBT people abroad who cannot be open about their sexuality. He has been particularly critical of Russia and received a death threat on Twitter following this intervention. Mike has also helped lots of LGBT constituents on an individual basis who continue to face discrimination on a daily basis.

LGBT Credentials
Mike has been a strong supporter of gay rights since his election to Parliament in 2010 and mentioned in his maiden speech in the House of Commons that he was proud of the LGBT community in Brighton & Hove. In 2011, when Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard faced closure, he repeatedly raised the issue to try to help save the organisation. Mike has also publicly branded gay-to-straight conversion therapy as flawed and dangerous.

While commitments in Parliament mean that he cannot attend many LGBT events, he is always keen to send a message of support. Step back in time invites the flier from Blackbird Tea Rooms in Ship Street on the curve, east of Browns. With an upstairs and a courtyard, this delightful outlet is open seven days a week and specialises in the traditional: eggs for breakfast or luncheon (4.757.50), soup (4.50), cheese board (7.80), sandwiches (4.204.70), savoury or sweet scones (3.503.95), cream tea including a pot of tea and fruit scone, jam & cream (6). Afternoon tea (12.50 per person) is perhaps the real deal with fruit scone, jam & cream, pot of tea of choice, choice of sandwich and cake selection.

63a Holland Road, Hove, BN3 1BA 01273 725701 www.bellagiorestaurant.co.uk ) My focus for this trip was mysteriously closed, so it was a toss up and the first venue won out. For me, it was a quite spectacular night out at the Bellagio. Brilliant presentation, fascinating menu, sumptuous tastes and a foursome coming together to eat for the first time, such fun! There was more than enough to entice and the waiter had to wait some time before we finally sorted ourselves out. We kept to the house white and red, the latter being seriously good (both red & white 17.50). Other bottles of white ranged from 19.50 to 30.50, and reds from 23.50 to 62.50. Glasses arrived and a jug of water was poured without hesitation, then a bowl of black olives which were so good it required replenishment without charge. Then the amuse-bouche: a fish mousse on a black biscuit, topped with a sliver of pastry. The starters (from 6.95) included a sweet corn panacotta (v) with pickled baby vegetables, kiwi and granny apple jelly; ponzu cured duck breast with pickled daikon, crispy leaves, toasted pine nuts; a stylish smoked salmon with blini, poached egg, asparagus and crme fraiche; and finally my seared scallops with scallop roe mousse, sweet corn pure, roasted water chestnut and lemongrass foam. Full marks for style, taste and presentation. The mains, priced from 11.95 to 17.95, included a coq au vin with pancetta, baby onion & girolles, creamy mash and red wine jus; braised free range pork belly with crispy cracking, confit potato, apple & prune pure, French bean & prosciutto wrap, caramelized baby apple, baby beetroot, pomegranate & pink peppercorn jus; a seriously rich roast rump of lamb with fondant potato, young spinach, confit garlic, roast baby beetroot, baby carrots and almond & rosemary jus; and for me a trio of duck: roast breast, confit leg and liver parfait with roast salsify, pear, dauphinoise potato, butter beans, courgette, dehydrated parsley sponge, port jus which as quite exceptional in taste, texture and presentation, as were all the dishes. The desserts (from 4.95 to 6.95) were even more spectacular, the more so as I had cheekily suggested that we would have tried out the trio of chocolate at 5.95 which arrived in addition to our order for gratis; wow, was that good, with a chocolate delice with chocolate biscuit, chocolate mousse and a dark chocolate truffle with cocoa tuile. The tiramasu with iced expresso parfait (possibly the most predictable), then there was a pistachio & walnut mille feuille with honey, raspberry texture with raspberry mousse, sorbet, jelly, pure, powder, fresh raspberry and raspberry tuile, then my stunningly tart lemon curd tart with sabl biscuit, honeycomb, orange jelly, orange tuile and meringue which was sampled by all! Americano coffees all round (1.95 each), and we were well pleased. All in just over 75 for two, including a bottle of house wine, thoroughly worthy. The service had been attentive without being oppressive, which is something of a challenge, as we happened to be the only table, but what an evening. For me verging on memorable which is not a phrase Ive managed in all 15 or so years that Ive been out and about on Gscenes behalf!
My trip, at lunchtime, included sharing a pot of breakfast tea for two (4.60), a bowl of the spicy butternut squash soup of the day accompanied by roll and butter. Really filling and satisfying. Not so satisfying however that I couldnt do justice to one of the selection of delectable cakes and tarts (3.90). Mine the drizzled lemon, whilst my companion attacked the rich chocolate torte. Quite the nicest Ive sampled for a while. Other cakes include blackbird, carrot, banana & passion, coffee & walnut, orange & almond with chocolate ganache. Alternatives here were meringue served with fresh fruit and cream, Bakewell tart and of course the traditional toasted tea cake (2.60). Business was brisk, service swift and charmingly attentive as there appeared little pressure for the table, though all a tad removed from our modern emporia where folk seem to set up camp and plug in for an afternoon of free light and leccie whilst consuming just the one cup Im signed up with my Blackbird Ration Book eagerly awaiting my freebie in due course.

Beginning with flat plains of colour, leaving no area blank, then leaving the work face down on a blanket until he's ready to resume, he then incorporates the smudges, smears and textures to build up the scene which first inspired his imagination. ) TOM BENJAMIN: SOLO SHOW (Sat 22Sun 30). Born in 1967, Tom grew up near Lewes within the South Downs. He trained at Brighton then Norwich School of Art. Tom paints his landscapes and seascapes on the spot, despite the potential extremes of weather. He is quoted as stating The artists job is to make poetry out of the ordinary. ) Nicola Streeten is an anthropologist-turned-illustrator and comics scholar. She presents the stories of Victoria Hamer and Dr Ingrid Kane, Consultant Stroke Physician, Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust. Nicolas graphic memoir, Billy, Me & You, about her bereavement following the death of her two year-old son is the first graphic memoir to be published by a British woman and she received a British Medical Association Award in 2012. Her second graphic novel, Hymn, explores issues around abortion. Nicola is working on a PhD at the University of Sussex on British womens comics. Postcard-sized art will be exhibited for one week, before being auctioned on Amazon. The Big Art Secret 2 features postcard-sized art signed on the back so that the identity of the artist remains secret until the end of the auction, when all will be revealed. The exhibition and auction attracted national attention in 2013, when it featured works by David Hockney, Tracey Emin and David Dimbleby.
) Woodrow Phoenix is very interested in using comics to extend the possibilities for factual and fictional narratives. He presents the stories of Duncan Harrap and Dr Khalid Ali, Senior Lecturer in Geriatrics at Brighton & Sussex Medical School, and consultant stroke physician, Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath. Woodrows book Rumble Strip (Myriad Editions) was called a work of genius by The Times. www.woodrowphoenix.co.uk ) Ian Williams is a comic artist, physician and the founder of GraphicMedicine.org. ) Violinist Tasmin Little and the BBC Philharmonic, under Sir Andrew Davis, have gone for some canny programming here. Getting top billing is the ever-popular The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams, which Little performs this month in Brighton (see listings), and it receives a beautifully sensitive performance here, without a hint of routine a remarkable achievement in itself. We are also treated to expanded arrangements of three popular
Elgar salon pieces. Once again, these are lovingly yet not overindulgently performed. However, the real meat here is E J Moerans (1894-1950) Violin Concerto. The Irish inflections throughout, the lively dancing middle Scherzo, and a particularly beautiful slow final movement make this a very enjoyable and accessible piece that surely could be more regularly performed. Heres hoping Littles advocacy brings it greater recognition. Deliuss (1862-1934) Lgende is a delightful short single movement work, with singing violin lines, and skillful orchestration, particularly in the use of the wind section. This is followed by Holsts (1874-1934), A Song of the Night. Unfortunately, this suffers from the juxtaposition, and despite some interesting brass writing, and a striking opening violin cadenza, it didnt hold my interest the performance cannot be faulted, however. Throughout, Little combines a consistently
smooth and sweet tone with an easy command of the considerable demands of these pieces. A well crafted programme of winning performances, highly recommended. Chandos CHAN10796 ) The Heimbach Festival draws great chamber performers, and their live recordings often have real excitement and energy. The latest, a collection of early 20th century works, is no exception. It opens with Two Pieces for Piano Trio by Lili Boulanger (1893-1918), the first female winner of the Prix de Rome at the age of 19, who sadly died just five years later. Her older sister, Nadia Boulanger (18871979) went on to become the the most celebrated composition teacher of the last century, with students including Copland, Philip Glass, Piazolla and even Quincy Jones. She produced a limited output herself, as the tragic death of her sister led her to vow to stop composing, devoting herself to teaching, conducting and to promoting Lilis work. Here, her early Three Pieces for Cello & Piano are already more challenging harmonically, in contrast to the more lyrical soundworld of Lilis work. Debussy is represented here by an early Scherzo for Cello & Piano, and his Violin Sonata. The Sonata is performed by Alina Ibragimova (violin), with Lars Vogt (piano). Ibragimova produces a slightly more rounded sound than cellist Gustav Rivinius achieves in the Scherzo and the Nadia Boulanger pieces. At times, his tone is a little brittle although to be fair, this is perhaps more suited to the astringency of Boulangers writing. The final work on the disc is Paul Hindemiths (1895-1963) Trio for Violin, Viola & Cello. Sometimes his music can be somewhat dry and cerebral, yet here there is real energy and life, and the live performance led by Christian Tetzlaff (violin) communicates this well. Avi 8553295
Tempest (Op. 31 No. 2), the Moonlight (Op. 27 No. 2), the Grande Sonate (Op. 26), and of course the Waldstein (Op. 53), which heralds the final period sonatas which will presumably form the final volume in due course. As with Volume 1, Bavouzets playing is commanding, and following his ongoing Haydn cycle, it is interesting to hear him bring the articulation and joy of that repertoire into his Beethoven, whilst also having the power and gravitas required for the increasingly extreme writing in Beethovens sonatas. I particularly like his Tempest, and the slow/fast contrasts in the first movement are especially sensitively judged. I prefer a darker, more menacing Moonlight than Bavouzet gives, and the finale here could be wilder and less tamed. However, his Waldstein is a towering performance, particularly throughout the challenging Rondo finale. Chandos CHAN10798(3)

) Finally, chamber music by HEINRICH HOFMANN (1842-1902). Previously unknown to me, he was one of the most frequently performed German composers of the day, and yet is almost completely forgotten today. Having listened to this new CD from the Berolina Ensemble of three of his chamber works, I can see why his music was very popular, but I can also perhaps understand why it hasnt stood the test of time. The String Sextet is lively, with lyrical tunes and a rousing finish; the Serenade for Flute & Sting Quintet has great writing for the flute, with a touching slow movement and dance-like finale; while the Octet, for the unusual line-up of flute, clarinet, horn, bassoon and string quartet, is the most interesting piece here, with greater complexity of ideas yet there are still no great surprises. And therein lies the crux music that doesnt surprise may be popular in its day, but it is unlikely to achieve longevity. These are convincing ) French performances, and the wind players pianist Jean in the Octet particularly deserve Efflam-Bavouzet mention for their lyricism. ) Being a child of the 1980s, I was raised on some amazing cartoons. From the adventures of He-Man to the camp extravaganza that could only be Jem & The Holograms there were so many animated shows to keep a young lad happy that I was spoilt for choice! Out of all the cartoons of the time my absolute favourite was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT), renamed Hero Turtles in good old Blighty due to some weird controversy created by Margaret Thatcher over ninjas in the media at the time. TMNT followed the exploits of four turtles that were mutated into human form by some spilled mutagen formula in the sewers. They were then trained in ninjitsu by their mentor and father, Splinter, a human who was mutated into a rat after coming in contact with the same mutagen spillage. The four turtles, named after four famous renaissance painters, mainly faced and fought the evil foot clan, a group of robotic ninjas led by the Shredder, an old enemy of their master; and Krang, a villainous brain-like creature from the hellish Dimension X. The cartoon began in 1988 and was a massive hit straight away with the franchise becoming a huge worldwide success. This helped the series to continue on until 1996, when the cartoon ended after 10 fantastic seasons. In celebration of this awesome cartoon from my childhood, and the fantastic new series on Nickelodeon, heres a look at the comics that inspired these brilliant spin offs. Lets start with the original comic that started it all: TMNT was created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird back in 1984 and published by Mirage Studios. The series was a one shot parody of many different comics of the time, mostly taking the piss out of Daredevil and writer/artist Frank Miller. The original comics success and popularity inspired many a spin off and led to a comic run that would last right up until 2009. The original comics were all in black and white and were much darker than any of their spin off counterparts with the turtles freely killing their enemies and blood flying everywhere. The original comics still stand up today and more than deserve to be read either in their original black and white style or the recent releases that collect different arcs in graphic novel format and lovingly fill the stories with colour. After the series was sold in 2009 to Nickelodeon, the rights to the comics were now with IDW Publishing who put out their own series in 2011 that re-imagines the origins of the turtles and many other aspects of the series. The IDW Turtles mixes stuff from the original comics and the animated series to create a new storyline that has been amazing since its first issue. The art and writing are constantly spectacular and manage to bring the Turtles origins right up to date, keeping the series feeling fresh and a must read for any comic fan!

) Due to the huge success of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic and even more so the animated series, there were many different types of media and collectables revolving around the story of the Ninja Turtles. Arguably the most successful of these were the video games based on the TMNT series, which themselves cover many different genres of fighting games. From scrolling fighting games to one-on-one tournament fighters; if it involves weapons then the Turtles have tried it. The first ever game based on the Turtle quartet is 1989s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Konami (get used to that title as many of the later games are also called this!), which itself is based on the TV series opposed to the comics. Originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) it found its way onto most platforms of the time such as the Amiga, Commodore 64 and the ZX Spectrum and was a huge success. Taking control of the Turtle of your choice, you navigate the mission map defeating enemies whilst moving from mission to mission. This section is controlled using an overhead view and switches to a side scroller once you jump into the missions. This game is notable in its sharp difficulty level with the second half of mission two still being rated by gamers to this day as one of the hardest levels ever in a video game. Even though it is a difficult and mostly frustrating experience the game does capture the fun of the Turtles TV series with each of the Turtles having their own strengths and weaknesses. It even has a rendition of that famous theme tune whilst venturing across the map! Possibly the greatest and most fondly remembered TMNT video game is 1992s SNES port of the arcade game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time. Being based once again on the TV series, this game follows the turtles as they attempt to take down Krang and Shredder after they steal the Statue of Liberty (just go with it!). The game is a scrolling fighting game ala Streets of Rage or Final Fight but can support up to four players (two in the SNES version) with each fighter taking control of one of the turtles. Every turtle has their own strengths and weaknesses and trying all of the characters out and learning these is all part of the fun. The graphics are bright and colourful like the show, and even features the voices from the TV series uttering some of the Turtles more famous catchphrases as you battle the hordes of the foot clan and some recognisable enemies from the TV show. Whilst the original SNES game is only available on that platform, you can download an enhanced remake on Xbox Live or PSN which features new graphics recreated in 3D, all the levels from the arcade version and taunts and quips re-recorded by the 2003 series cast.

ITS NOT JUST RAINING MEN SAYS CRAIG HANLON-SMITH
There will not (should not) be a gay in the land, possibly the world, certainly not the world possessed by a hand held social media device, that will not have heard of Panti Bliss by the time you read this article. Irish Drag Queen Panti delivered an emotive speech recorded on stage at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, in response to the homophobia faced on a daily basis by Irelands gay community, and the recording went viral. Within three days of the online broadcast close to 300,000 people from all over the world had watched the statement, it is likely to be many more now. Pantis alter ego Rory ONeill both in and out of drag has at the time of writing received statements of support from celebrities from across the world of entertainment including Stephen Fry, Graham Norton, RuPaul and Madonna, not to mention thousands of Joe Public followers on Twitter. Panti, well known and celebrated within his own community, had, in very little time at all, stepped into the international shoes of Legend.

There is little doubt that the internet has changed the world and that the positive characteristics of social media can bring that world closer together. It is possible that Its Raining Men was only purchased by gay men over the age of 40, but unlikely that the global sharing of Panti Bliss inspirational and yet at times both self-reflective and depreciating statement on stage at The Abbey was assisted by only one clearly defined community; Panti more than likely had much broader help. But such assistance demonstrates a force for good, a change in perceptions, and an international support that if I might be so bold, I should like to name The Power of Gay. A power that in the first decade or so of the 21st century, has transcended the patronising limitations of the pink pound, and has come out fighting into the mainstream society spotlight wearing Swarovski Crystal bejeweled boxing gloves. If, despite their occasionally odd career moves, gays can keep Madonna and Kylie in Louboutins for the best part of 30 years, then we are nothing if not loyal. If our communal fan-base can shift recorded music by the thousands in almost an instant, if the measured social observations of a drag queen can encourage the online sharing of a YouTube clip to produce viewing figures and Twitter followers our politicians would bite their own hands off for, contemplate for a moment what we are able to achieve in the run up to both local and in 2015 national elections.
The same weekend as Pantis impassioned speech, Its Raining Men, yes that one, of The Weather Girls fame, re-entered the UK top 40 chart at number 31 following a few days of download sales alone. A recording with little, possibly no radio play, not a record company push, film soundtrack accompaniment or televised commercial support. Not an eagerly awaited anniversary edition or remix, nor Saturday night exposure to millions after a torturous murdering on the X-Factor. Its Raining Men shifted thousands of units as part of a pro-gay, anti UKIP, Facebook and Twitter campaign to push the song into the charts following comments made by a UKIP local councillor David Silvester, in an open letter to David Cameron that were both homophobic, and with respect Mr Silvester, a trifle ridiculous: This happened in the Old Testament, he railed, They were warned if they turned against God there would be pestilence, there would be war, there would be disasters. A published letter in a local paper (note, not even national) in which Mr Silvester is to be found blaming inclement weather and flooding in the South West on the progression of the UK Same-Sex Marriage Bill. One of the online campaign organisers Darren Pop said of the Its Raining Men chart position: I am incredibly proud of the song getting [in] the charts,; he wrote defiantly on the campaigns Facebook page that, its insanely humbling to see that we are not the weaker minority in society anymore that could be bullied and picked on. This well publicised defiance and rebellion is enough in itself to make anyone think twice before saying something bigoted in a public forum again." Of course it is much easier to click like or favourite whilst queuing for chips than it is to trek out to a polling station but consider this: David Silvester lost his party political membership for comments linking the gay community and the rising tides of flood water, he did not lose his job or opportunity to vote on important social and political issues that shape the lives of local residents. The Church of England is currently getting to grips with the Pilling Report on human sexuality. This is the outcome of two years work by a committee of Anglican bishops and others inquiring basically into the question of whether the Church's repressive teaching on homosexuality should be changed. Are we impressed with the answer they came up with? Well no, not really. The only concrete proposal of any minor significance that they came up with is that individual vicars and parish church councils should be allowed to have some sort of ceremony to 'mark' gay relationships for same-sex couples who wish it. But there will be no official authorised service. It will be a 'make-it-up-as-you-go-along' affair for individual clergy to decide on if they want to do it. All very grudging, all very squalid, as if the Church knows it has to do something (there are going to be gay marriages from now on for heaven's sake!) but wants to do as little as possible, and wants to dissociate itself as much as possible from the whole sordid business. Not much cause here for celebration, as was abundantly clear at the meeting held by Changing Attitude Sussex in January to discuss Pilling. And yet even this modest proposal has been greeted with howls of outrage from conservative evangelicals, for many of whom any acceptance of homosexuality at all is an abomination in the sight of God and to be put down at all costs, as illustrated by the obnoxious behaviour of Chichester General Synod member Andrea Minichiello Williams reported previously in this column. But while we in England discuss the niceties of an episcopal report, in sub-Saharan Africa our LGBT brethren find themselves in a living hell of Church-sponsored persecution, violence and murder. In Nigeria, Uganda and Kenya vicious anti-gay laws have been introduced which not only impose harsh prison sentences for gay sex but also criminalise anybody who fails to report somebody they suspect of being homosexual to the police. In this climate a cruel witchhunting atmosphere has developed making life a total nightmare for gay people.
Last week, Aloysius Agbo, the Anglican Bishop of Nsukka said, Every Christian in Nigeria is happy about the development especially when the President did that contrary to the pressure from the Western world. Being gay is unnatural, unwise and ungodly, he said. If our forefathers have done that [samesex marriage], many of us would not have been born. Davis has been phoning Nigerian friends and LGBT networks checking whether people are safe.
Tochukwu, a 29-year-old gay man from Aba, recounted how he ran away from home because his neighbours were pointing fingers at him saying he is one of those homosexuals. Tochukwu told Davis how in St Michaels Anglican Cathedral, the church where he worships, people are rejoicing and thanking God for the new law anti-gay law. He said he was avoiding going into the city for fear of been identified, as the violent mobs often rush to attack anyone suspected of being gay. You wont be given a chance to deny or refute such claims before you are attacked, he said. Adams, a 25-year-old member of Changing Attitude Nigeria in Jos said hes living in fear and scared to even reply any chat that has to do with being gay. I havent attended church since the law was passed because I dont want to be attacked. You need to read the newspapers to hear what bishops and religious leaders are saying. My members, most of whom depend on cyber cafes as means of getting internet services, are in fear of their emails being spied on by the authorities. Nik, a 31-year-old gay man from Abuja said that landlords are now giving notice to tenants who look feminine, or are suspected to be gay, to leave their homes because they fear mob attacks which could vandalize their property. He said that during a meeting in Abuja of a non-government organisation to discuss the new anti-gay law, we received an alert to run away from the village where we were meeting because the police would be there for random arrests. That was the end of the meeting we all ran for our lives and have not been able to come together since then. Uche Sam, the current Director of Changing Attitude Nigeria, said: As an Anglican and a gay citizen of Nigeria, I am not impressed with the silence of the Archbishop of Canterbury on the anti-gay law passed by the president of Nigeria. I want the Archbishop to speak against this law. I would also like the Archbishop to advise the Church of Nigeria to be welcoming to all people and stop persecuting us. Sam described how the law makes the work of Changing Attitude Nigeria illegal in Nigeria. We can get up to 10 years in prison if we are caught trying to organise a meeting, he said. As the law stands we cant affirm our identity as LGBT members of the Nigeria Anglican Church. Davis said that remaining silent means turning a blind eye as some of the most vulnerable people on the planet are imprisoned or flogged. It also risks destroying the credibility of Christianity in England and many other parts of the world where homophobia is considered scandalous. As they consider what to do about Pilling, bishops in the Church of England would do well to reflect on Davis' words, especially those bishops who are gay but still in the closet.

Davis Mac-Iyalla, founder of Changing Attitude Nigeria, was granted asylum in the UK as a result of his public stance in Nigeria which led to attacks and threats of violence. Davis has brought together reports of the way the Anti-Gay Marriage Bill recently signed into law by the Nigerian President is affecting gay Anglicans. He has also documented the shameful support given by the Bishop of Nsukkas to this heinous Bill.

I was brought up in a family of Jehovah's Witnesses; no birthdays, no Christmas, and definitely no gays. I grew up with a secret that I knew instinctively not to talk about. Closeted, I knocked on doors, led bible studies, (no free thinking allowed), and pretended. I was 20 when they found out and threw me out. I had nowhere to go and after living in a closed community all of my life the world was a strange and alien place. All of my family turned their backs on me, friends deserted me, my job fired me (I was working for a company run by JWs), and I lost my home. After sleeping in my car for a few nights I called the Samaritans and they found a shelter for me. How I wish there'd been a friendly old queen to hand that could explain to me how the world worked. I needed someone who had been around the block to help me navigate unfamiliar waters. Instead I muddled through on my own. It would be 10 years before I fully accepted myself as a gay man and understood that I was as deeply and unconditionally loved by God as anyone else. Adopted families became my lifeline. My friend Liz, who welcomed me unconditionally to her family, taught me that real love came with no strings. My church, (MCC), adopted me into the queerest family I had ever met and showed me that my sexuality and spirituality were not only compatible but deeply connected. My husband's family accepted me as a member with all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities due. Anna Madrigal calls family of choice our 'logical family', and I believe she is right. Odd that there are those that think that LGBT folk are unsuitable foster parents, or unqualified as adoptive parents. In my experience it's LGBT folk who especially understand what real family is

I dont know if the American sportsman who said If you dont go to friends funerals they wont come to yours was a natural comic or an idiot, but one good friend will now not be attending mine. I liked her for many reasons, but most of all for her delightful and focused generosity, the type that requires thought and kindness, not money. She died recently from pancreatic cancer, an increasingly common malignant tumour. The causes of this almost invariably fatal disease are not fully known but my prediction is that there will prove to be a relationship with sugar, and possibly alcohol, intake. It often takes the loss of an important person in ones life to make a review of ones lifestyle, finances, beliefs, and the state of relationships virtually unavoidable. In the wake of my friends death I have made a few decisions most of which revolve around being more generous with my time of which at my age I have plenty, at least on a day by day basis, and my money, there being no pockets in a shroud.

Based on these and similar experiences I propose that death and taxes are really part of a trio the last of which is uncertainty.

I fostered LGBT youth through the Albert Kennedy Trust in London. I created my own family and became the friendly old queen that had been through the mill and knew some of the pitfalls to avoid. Sometimes the kids listened to me, sometimes they didn't, but either way there was always someone on their side, whether they realised it or not. Because that's what real family is all about. It's about having someone unconditionally on your side. Whether it's flesh and blood or a family of choice. Whether it's a church family or an affinity group. Whether it's people we've known our whole lives or the stranger that, without strings, offers us a helping hand. Odd that there are those that think that LGBT folk are unsuitable foster parents, or unqualified as adoptive parents. In my experience it's LGBT folk who especially understand what real family is, and what it is worth. I believe it is what real church is all about, and the anchor that steadies us when the seas are rough. I believe that it is the right of everyone, regardless of gender identity or sexuality, to start a family of their own and invite others to feel the warmth of its glow. There are kids out there in the same situation that I was in so many years ago, and I have no doubt that they desperately need that too.

I forward this opening speech on behalf of the Rainbow Alliance to be read out at the opening of the Winter Olympics at Sochi, 2014.
So, go with all your fabulous sins, my brothers and sisters, and real joy will be sure to follow you. I love those who run to that slippery edge in a game of kiss, dare and death. I love those who subvert the very sex thats supposed to define them. I love those who love me back simply because of love itself, and I love those who keep loving, when loving has long passed. And those who know where normality ends and reality begins. The kids who put whatever they have into in a flimsy sack and find a way to leave their early families behind. And to falter over and over again and never stop faltering until they die, because those are the follies that make us. The mettle that binds us in every sea of little hope. The glue that never separates us from the reality of our life and death experiences. The fear that sometimes keeps us separate from each other, yet brings us together when the knives go down. The strength to draw from all history because we know that all history is really ours; that weve peppered the changes on those dull old maps and coloured the weave of every creative stroke. These changes made, because not to reminds us only of regret - the building stone of our lives were never allowed to shred.
NEVER FORGET YOUR HISTORY

What holds queer culture back? We do. We do, because of our continuing lack of acceptance of the normal. We just dont seem to trust the normal. More importantly, we may have nothing in our pockets, but we will never allow ourselves, at any point, to be just normal. Equality is not sought by us, nor is it an end result. So, no gifts please - we want no acceptance, because it seems that weve been right all along. What we are transcends the thousand barriers of race and class and gender because were everywhere and always will be. And we havent worried ourselves to traverse those difficult situations, weve ran at them screaming. Were the ones who have chosen to walk alone down those dark alleyways. And weve been granted no permission whenever its been sought. Weve come through reams of litigation and condemnation and will again and again. And we will still laugh in the face of any contrition, because we cant promise not to do any of it again - to any of your judges in fact, we will do it again, but next time it will be bigger and louder than the night sky in a hurricane. And well rise and fall and not worry because of the stars that surround us, our chosen families, that flicker away and die all too soon. We refuse to count our blessings, be contrite and play tic-tac-toe on the steps of your churches. Or to be strong again, when youve already decided not to listen.
What we are, transcends the thousand barriers of race and class and gender because were everywhere and always will be
So, we dont accept your acceptance, nor do we seek the breadth or creed of your forgiveness. Because we do not need forgiveness from anyone, that has to come from you, for yourselves. That has to come from the conscience of those whove beaten, ridiculed and chided us for thousands of years. Those whove denied us our real, dear families, those whove hijacked the funerals and begrudgingly complied with the normality of our new weddings. Ask yourselves, is this forgiveness? We lean on your one heart with the weight of millions who came before us, and who stand alongside us right now. I bring my pain with me to the table, a pain so great and long-lived that it still stirs the soul and the belly of my being. I bring on the faces of the young dead from my own past, the real warriors of a filthy bloody war we all went through together. And the women, who ran to the aid of their broken brothers and created a single voice thats still screaming out today.
The pathways to our worlds remain open but shackled. The roads are still wide but populated less. But we have shown over and over the power of our steps and grown steadily - supported only by the very best. Can we really give away this life of ours - a history so rich within us all? Can we not falter and have to watch our backs at every life event, lest it be normalized, and given the so-called protection of a society that has proved itself so wrong? To sacrifice our otherness is to walk with passing strangers, to lose the trust weve known to share. Because that otherness is our only identity. Its that one within a crowd that refuses to be accompanied, or the voice that will be heard - but only by a few. Will they kill it off with persecution again? Will they succeed in changing us into what they really think we are? Will they keep trying when they have failed so many, many times before? Its time to stop history, dead. Whats happened up until now happens no more. The door has been closed for the very last time. So, dont rejoice or permit us - we reject all of that. Instead, look to yourselves and in there, see who we are. Then look out to the world and see who has made it glow for you. Go on, I dare you, look out into the world. Philip Larkin once wrote They f**k you up your mum and dad, they may not mean to, but they do. According to his infamous poem, parents are the very last people who should be allowed to have children. Why? Because many do it for all the wrong reasons. They do it to satisfy social, economic, and biological convention. Often its an accidental consequence of unprotected sex. What a mess. But theyre allowed, nay, encouraged to raise children at any cost. We even pay them to do it. With all the hoo-ha surrounding the acceptance of LGBT adoption and fostering, I was surprised to learn that there has never actually been a law preventing gays per se. It was the acceptance of unmarried couples to adopt, that rendered LGBTs legitimate under the new equality legislation. Given that a woman in California has married her pet rock, Id agree marriage isnt a reliable qualification for proving parenting competence. Gay couples are required to demonstrate loving stable relationships as are their straight counterparts. So, its all equal than. Nope. According to the Catholic Church, the family that prays together, stays together, but that edict doesnt extend to LGBT adopters. A Scottish Catholic adoption charity has won an appeal to discriminate against us. The children formally in their care will suffer, but what do you expect from a religion whose leaders once denounced the Potato because it wasnt mentioned in the Bible?

Staying with the USA, where wall-to-wall homophobia is the norm, a recent study showed LGBT adopters to be a valuable new resource in the adoption and fostering of children traditionally left to rot. It seems LGBTs are far happier to open their homes and hearts across racial barriers, or to those with special needs and the much maligned older children. Could this be because we as a subculture are not stymied by patriarchal norms when it comes to recognising a family? Or are we as second class clients being offered children that many traditional straight couples dismiss out of hand. Its all a bit painful to think about. I think LGBT parents are generally more motivated because parenthood is hard-won. Children of LGBT parents often report less anxiety in general. Mealy-mouthed critics say they are damaged and bullied, failing to see that they themselves are the bullies. Their unhelpful, stigmatising commentary is the only fly in the ointment. Gays have been having and rearing children since the dawn of time. Famously, off the top of my hairdo I can name Alexander the Great, James I and also his father Lord Darnley, Mary Wollstonecraft whose daughter Mary Shelly wrote Frankenstein. Todays population explosion facilitates honesty of sexuality over duty to procreate. In short, every LGBT person in a loving relationship deserves their mission, should they choose to accept it, to become chief cook and bottom-washer to some very lucky child.

I have children. They are lovely. And they are horrible. They fill my life with meaning and purpose, and they drive me to distraction Gscenes theme this month is adoption and fostering. I dont know anyone who is doing either, so Im not sure that Im qualified to comment. But I do have children, which makes me particularly stand out amongst transmen. In fact when I first visited the Gender Identity Clinic in London last year, the consultant who saw me commented that I was an unusual presentation. When I questioned this, he said that most transmen are first seen at the clinic in their thirties (Im 44), and that it was rare for us to marry and have children. The implication being that for the main part, transmen usually spend time living as a lesbian first, rather than choosing a conventional heterosexual marriage as I did. Nonetheless, I did. And I am glad I did. Although my marriage was unhappy and violent, I stuck it out because I wanted those babies. I think there is a primeval urge to procreate that many people have, and for me it was unstoppable, irrepressible. In my narrow-world view, within the confines of my small-minded Catholic world, the only way to do that was to get hitched. I will never regret my marriage, not least because of its produce. Bringing children into the world, this world, is a massive commitment, and one not lightly undertaken. Its a life sentence of worry and responsibility, and a source of huge joy and wonder. To hold a child in your arms and experience their utter dependence on you as their protector, provider, source of love, food, shelter and comfort, is a privilege beyond any other. It isn't just a matter of feeding them, clothing them, picking the right school and education for them, vetting their friends and paying for their vast array of extracurricular activities. No - theres a far deeper and more subtle job to be done. Shepherding them to adulthood in one piece, hoping that we can teach, or maybe even show them, how to be well-adjusted, productive, self-sufficient, responsible and useful adults, with a desire to contribute to society and the good of the world. It seems to me that from the moment our children are born, when (God-willing) they are about as perfect a specimen as they can ever be, we unintentionally and systematically set about destroying them. This may seem an extreme view; we all want to do our best for our children and try hard to achieve that, making decisions that seem right for them, and us, at the time. Sadly my own fallibility means that they are constantly on the receiving end of behaviours that I don't want them to emulate, or demonstrating actions and reactions that are deeply unhealthy. Im convinced that however hard I try to get it right, my kids will some day turn around and blame me for the things that aren't going well in their lives. Enter the psychotherapists couch. I know this because its what Ive done; looked back and tormented my own parents (mentally, not in person - that would be very unproductive), and blamed them for the various miserable aspects of my youth, and the terrible habits and addictions and emotional insobriety that I find myself fighting against on a daily basis.
Of course if I ever float the idea amongst my children that they may one day resent me for the way they have been raised, they object strongly in a way thats really gratifying. No! cries my 15 year-old daughter, I respect you more than anyone in the world! Youre the best Samjam ever! my nine year-old protests. (Thats their nickname for me and has happily usurped mum). And my 12 year-old lovingly refers to me as daddy penguin. In the Antarctic Emperor penguin colonies, its the male penguin who hatches the egg and feeds the young You see they are too young to know yet, that the bulk of our emotional wiring occurs before our third birthday, and that the legacy of my less than conscious choices will impact on them for the rest of their lives. I am still, thankfully, the centre of their universe, and frankly they have little choice but to be dependent on me. Their world-view is restricted to Samjam, and they don't know any different. Yet. But one day they will, and all I can hope is that when they do, they have an equal measure of compassion and understanding that allows them to process the circumstances of their lives and how they have been shaped in a wholesome and accepting way. There is nothing more poisonous than a resentful and bitter adult who hasn't yet learned to forgive their parents for past transgressions. Lets face it, none of us are perfect, and those of us who choose to parent are not special or different, or better people. In fact were quite possibly more naive and stupid than those who dont. But we do have something as a result of that choice that is unique and irreplaceable. We have chosen a path that takes us outside ourselves, beyond me. The choice to parent in any way by definition is a superlative cure to selfishness and self-centred living. I know Im a better person for this; being forced, on a daily basis, in the big things as well as the little, to take three other peoples lives and wellbeing into consideration at every turn. Now that is emancipating.

ADOPTION OF MUSLIM GIRL STOPPED AFTER DEMO IN HARROW

I saw these headlines on the BBC website a couple of days ago and was intrigued enough to read the whole story. Apparently a threeyear-old Somali girl, who I shall call Casiiso, was put up for adoption and her potential adopters were two White women in a same-sex marriage. Mor Dioum, the Director of the Victoria Climbie Foundation, persuaded Harrow Council to review Casiisos adoption after some 50 women protested outside the Civic Centre. He said: The family wish their religious and cultural values are taken into consideration when making such an important decision. They are saying that this is in the best welfare of [Casiiso]. He also denied that the couple's same-sex marriage was why they were protesting. He insisted: The familys issue in this case is not about the sexual orientation of these two individuals. Relatives of Casiisos extended family had apparently offered to look after her but were rejected out of hand, without any explanation, and yet Social Services insisted there were no Muslim adopters available, and this was why Casiiso was matched up outside her own race/religion. Culture I agree is important, it is good to know who you are, where you came from, what your family history is etc. But the world is smaller than it used to be, there are mixed marriages galore, the age of technology is upon us where in a blink of an eye we find out anything we want to know in the world and its many nations of colour, faith, race, creed, religion. And just as important to all things cultural is a happy family life that gives you love and security; and (playing devils advocate here) does it really matter if the people who want to adopt you dont come from the same racial and religious background as you? Does it?

We are PC Rich Bridger and LGBT caseworker Rory Smith and were the dedicated LGBT Liaison Team for the Brighton & Hove Division. Well be writing a column each month to tell you about important things such as appeals for information, public safety advice and details of our drop-in sessions across the city. Its also about you. Were here to listen to you, answer your questions and to help. Well be hosting an online questionnaire, asking what YOU think about the police, and in particular the LGBT team. Use it to tell us what were doing wrong, what were doing right and what we can do better. Well also tell you the most recent hate crime statistics, so you (and us!) can see what hate crime is happening around the city.
WHAT IS HATE CRIME?

Many of us have probably heard the term hate crime a lot over the past decade, but do we understand what that actually means? Like many organisations, the police have a habit of talking in jargon a lot of the time. We refer to incidents and crime. A hate* incident is where an action is perceived to be homophobic, biphobic, or transphobic by the victim, or any other person. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view) its not a crime to be anti-LGBT, but where a law has been broken and theres an element of hate, that's when we call it a hate crime. However, regardless of whether an incident turns out to be criminal or not, police can help. For example, we can refer victims to appropriate support services, give advice on safety, or help solve neighbourhood disputes. In addition, knowing where incidents are happening helps us to identify where problems might develop into crime, and so preventing that from happening. *Our broader definition of hate includes racism, religious hatred, and disability hate, in addition to LGBT hate.
RECENT FIGURES
) Between Dec 27, 2013 and Jan 26, 2014 there were 10 reported incidents of homophobic and one reported incident of transphobic hate. Whilst there are several investigations ongoing, four of the 11 have been identified as crimes, with the Crown Prosecution Service authorising charges on three of these - two of which were homophobic public order offences against police officers. Not all incidents resulted in police outcomes, with partners in Housing & Environmental Health taking the lead action where appropriate. In all of these cases, the police assist and advise the lead agency in achieving action against the perpetrator. Sussex Police take hate crime very seriously and are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice. We need victims and witnesses to come forward and tell us about it. We promise to treat you with dignity, respect and listen to your reports and treat them with the appropriate attention. We are privileged to appear in the Stonewall Top 100 Employers again this year, and enjoy a top score in Community Engagement. This is important to us, as it tells us were doing something right. We need the co-operation of the community to maintain this, so please help us to help you!
Does it really matter if the people who want to adopt you dont come from the same racial and religious background as you?
But Im troubled by this case for a couple of reasons. Casiiso has two siblings who are already in care, (no mention of either of these two children being adopted) their mother sadly has mental health issues, hence the reasons why her children have been taken away from her, so why have Casiisos extended family not come forward to adopt or care for these other children as they are doing with Casiiso right now? Is the real underlying reason for this protest the fact that the adopters are lesbian or even White for that matter? Is this a case of racism and homophobia, rather than real concern for Casiiso? I simply cant answer these troubling questions combined with the issue of race, religion, faith and culture when it comes to adoption, but I do know one thing. As long as adopters are loving, caring, and want to be good parents, then their sexuality should not matter at all. As She Who Shall Be Obeyed said, Mums and Mums, Dads and Dads, Mums and Dads, they are all the same, they are parents.
