This social studies lesson is constructed for 2nd grade students to learn about weather and climate and the difference between the two. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook Neighborhoods (p.84-87). C. Basic Information: Grade Level: 2nd grade Time to Complete this Lesson: 45-60 minutes Groupings: whole group reading, small group discussions, partners for activity, and independent for assessment

Vocabulary & Study Guide (Unit Resources p.23) for every student (sample at bottom of TE 87)

Houghton Mifflin 2nd grade Social Studies Book: Neighborhoods (p. 84-87) for every student Paper, pencils, and crayons/colored pencils E. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G8.2.1 - Tell how the physical environment affects community activity, i.e., recreation, water usage. I can explain different activities people can do in their current climate or weather situation.

G. Procedure: 1. Refer to notes on TE 84 Get Set to Read. Explain the Reading Skill and Study Guide students will complete as we read. Call students attention to the pictures on p. 85. Start a discussion on what the weather was like yesterday in contrast to today. Introduce vocabulary (weather, climate)

2. As a class read p. 84-87, stopping periodically to ask questions as indicated in the TE margins. 3. Students will be encouraged to take notes on their Reading Skill worksheet (optional) and their Study Guide while we read as a class. They can continue filling it out when the reading is finished. 4. Ask the questions listed in the margins of the TE as a continual check for understanding. (after p. 84) What do the words, numbers, and pictures tell about weather in the picture on p.84? (review question #1 p.85) What are two kinds of weather that could be in one climate? (TE 85) What do people want to know what the weather will be like tomorrow? (TE 85) What activities can people enjoy in snowy climates? (TE 86) How does climate affect farmers choices of plants and animals to raise?

H. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

Complete the Lesson Review (p. 87): What is the difference between weather and climate? How do weather and climate relate? Activity: Draw a picture of where you live and how your climate affects the people where you live. Explain your drawing. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students must Tell how the physical environment affects community activity, i.e., recreation, water usage. Drawing a picture of this will show if the student understands what their climate is where they live. I. Closure: Quick discussion over the three statements in the Review/Assess section of TE 87.

J. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think having the students explain what activities they can do in their primary climate will be the easiest because it directly relates back to the students personal experience and everyday environment. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The most challenging part for myself to teach is the difference between climate and weather, because I can see how students would think they are the same thing. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? As an extension of the lesson I would use the Extend Lesson 3 (p. 88-91) about a family who lives in a cold climate and needs a weather report to help them plan. 4. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I would use the Reteach Minilesson sheet on TE 87 to have students summarize in their own words the main ideas of the lessons. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? There is nothing I would change, I think it is a basic lesson over weather and climate. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The hardest part for me was connecting the standards with the lesson. It was difficult for me to find the best fit.
