Consult physician if needed for children < 3 yr; if needed for longer than 10 days; if continued fever, severe or recurrent pain occurs (possible serious illness). Avoid using multiple preparations containing acetaminophen. Carefully check all OTC products. Give drug with food if GI upset occurs. Discontinue drug if hypersensitivity reactions occur. Take the drug only for complaints indicated; it is not an anti-inflammatory agent. Report rash, unusual bleeding or bruising, yellowing of skin or eyes, changes in voiding patterns.

Drug Name

Mechanism of Action Cetirizine competes with histamine for binding at H1-receptor sites on the effector cell surface, resulting in suppression of histaminic edema, flare, and pruritus. The low incidence of sedation can be attributed to reduced penetration of cetirizine into the CNS as a result of the less lipophilic carboxyl group on the ethylamine side chain

Adverse Reaction In adults and children 12 years and older: Drowsiness, excessive tiredness, dry mouth, sore throat, dizziness In children 6-11 years old: Headache, sore throat, stomach pain, coughing, drowsiness, diarrhea, bronchospasms (sudden, uncontrolled narrowing of airways in lungs), epistaxis (nose bleeding), nausea, vomiting

Contraindications - Cetirizine is contraindicated in those patients with a known hypersensitivity to it or any of its ingredients or hydroxyzine.

Nursing Considerations Patient Teaching: -Ensure patients are awarethat this medication may make them drowsy. If affected they should not drive or operate machinery. -Alcohol can increase any drowsiness. -Patients who have missed a dose should take it as soon as they remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, patients should skip the missed dose. Double doses should not be taken. - Health education advice should be given regarding limiting exposure to allergens. -Nurses should refer to manufacturer's summary of product characteristics and to appropriate local guidelines
