Buildin

a Victorian

Team

B;:::::::~iL:GR : CC C i

All soccer enthu~iasts are becoming alive to the fact that more enterprise is needed in the t.lme. Nowhere is this more applicable thah in the present archaic method of selecting teams for representing the State and ~xpecting to get results. Ofteh, without even trial games, teams ~ave been selected only a short period, sometimes justa few days, prior to an l~portant gat1.1e. The .players do .not meet eac.hother unt11they are m-the dres~1)Jg room, as It were. They even are cpmparqt1~e strang~ ers to each other and must feel anythmg but a happy team which is so esse?ti~l. to success. They actually are eleven mdlvlduals, and ,.,;thout any preyious ,pla:ying together as athey are expect-ed to succeed. Naturally

The result of such a method if adopted would be astonishing, and other sports, -such as tennis, have proved this to be absolutely essential if 'we are to ~oldour own in international, or even interstate contests.. It is applicable toallgraaes, seniors down tq schoolboys. ' . Ani)t~er method of getting the players, would be for them to be nominated by the Clubs, and the State Selectors to go to the various matches and watch those players tr.at have been nominated and if found suitable the players names to b~ included on a trai~ing list.

',-"ill:

such methods cannot succeed, and our pe.rformances in the past have proyed it. quite conclusively. N Qi'o',ta k e anot her met h0d w h. h must g1ve ' 1C ,far ~etter resrilts, As early in the seaso? as possIble, the State Selectors shQuld nom mate , approxi-mately 20 of the most promising playersbrought in the tpgether game, and arrahge fora them be weekly, under coach,to a trailJer, and a m,anager. Olympic Park would be an ideal place. This would allow these playet:s to practice :toget!1er, with definite '.-;;che:mesas o.utlined.. by the coach. Views cQuldbe frankly discu~ed al11ong~tthe lot .of them. pnssibly 1119re players could bead'ded to the,..t~aining list" as the season went on. ~

r;et Into the local soccer team, he finds thIS IS not so easy as it sounds. He must get his own kit together, and this is one of the most vital things in his effort to become a soccer player. How many boys realise this?
