Scout collects
DVDs for
service project
By L. HABER
The Sun
As a senior at Haddonfield Me-
morial High School, like most stu-
dents, Robert Keegan has enjoyed
many extracurricular activities
throughout the years. Besides
being a dedicated track athlete,
Keegan has continued to be a ded-
icated student. His most notable
extracurricular activity may be
his ranking with the Eagle
Scouts.
As a long-time member of Had-
donfield Troop 65, Keegan stood
in front of a panel of local Scout
leaders to announce a service
project on Jan 15 to collect DVDs
for a local shelter.
Since the project was approved,
Keegan has worked tirelessly on
getting the whole town to notice
his efforts.
The idea is to try and get as
many people in the community
and as many people in the Scouts
involved, Roberts mother, Jane,
said.
Keegans first step in his offi-
cial Eagle Scout service project
was emailing local businesses to
ask if he could put collection
boxes in places for as many peo-
ple as possible to see.
With fellow Scouts, Keegan
went to the local Acme supermar-
ket and gathered free cardboard
boxes.
The next phase of the project
was advertising. Keegan and fel-
low Scouts made flyers and post-
ed them in visible locations
around town.
After much negotiation, Kee-
gan was given permission to post
collection boxes for DVDs at Had-
donfield Memorial High School,
Haddonfield Middle School, the
Haddonfield Information Center,
Christ the King Church and the
coffee shop Jersey Java. Loca-
tions in other towns include De-
Masi Elementary and Middle
Schools in Marlton, and Lou and
Anns Delicatessen in Cherry
Hill.
Until March 9, the collection
boxes will rest at the above loca-
tions for the sole purpose of col-

The Sun
On the evening of Feb. 12, swim
teams across the country were
finishing their regular seasons.
For Haddonfield Memorial High
School sophomore Sophie
Fontaine, a season of swimming
may have come to an end, but
something unusual happened
along the way.
For the first time in HMHS his-
tory, three swim records were bro-
ken in one night by one person.
Fontaine broke records for the
200-meter freestyle, the 100-meter
freestyle and the 100-meter but-
terfly races.
When I looked up at the score-
board after my races and saw my
times, I was really surprised. I
was not at all expecting to go per-
sonal best times and win both
events. I really owe it to the sup-
port of my coaches and team-
mates. They helped me get excit-
ed, and seeing the rest of the girls
swimming so fast really helped
me, Fontaine said.
For the 200 free and 100 butter-
fly races, Fontaine broke the
record by about two seconds each.
Fontaine had a time of 1:50.29 in
the free, and 56:81 in the butterfly.
By sheer milliseconds, Fontaine
broke the 100-meter freestyle
record, with a time of 52.11.
The only expectations we
coaches have from swimmers are
that they accept any challenge be-
fore them. In her short two years
on the team, Sophie always has
the team first concept, head
swim coach Bob Querubin said.
Even after Fontaines high-
scoring personal victories, the
team lost against Ocean City in
the final round of the Group B
NJSIAA Tournament, by a team
score of 95-75. Still, the records
echoed throughout the collective
spirit of the team.
The girls performed their best
meet as a team, scoring over 400
more power points than their pre-
vious best this season, Querubin
said.
Power points are used for
teams to enter state team tourna-
ments, where there is a chart
with numerical values for a time
achieved in each event. The faster
the time for a race, the more
points a team scores.
I don't think a lot of swim-
mers knew until after the meet
and we were on the bus ride home
what Sophie had accomplished,
and when they heard, the bus
went ballistic cheering, Queru-
bin said.
Even with such outstanding
team support, Fontaine has
events in which she recognized
she could use improvement, in

lecting new and gently used DVDs
for the Crossroads Programs
Youth Center.
I choose DVDs simply because
the place I went to asked for
DVDs. The reason I choose Cross-
roads was because most shelters
focus on younger kids or adults.
Crossroads focuses on teenaged
kids, so I thought it was a really
good place to help out, Keegan
said.
After a friend was placed in the
Crossroads care facility for a
short time, Keegan was inspired
to help. Crossroads helps adoles-
cents in foster care find homes.
Crossroads also helps displaced
and at-risk teens find paths to fu-
ture success, and Keegan wanted
to give the shelter a collection of
something permanent, as op-
posed to a supply of items that
would eventually run out.
One of his obstacles was fig-
uring out who he wanted to help,
Jane said. Its really all about
leadership skills youre con-
stantly working on goals.
To create a real donation proj-
ect for Crossroads before he goes
to college, Keegan had to first
complete many Eagle Scout as-
signments, team projects and
other forms of community serv-
ice.
Budgeting for the project was a
challenge in itself. As required by
the Eagle Scout code, Keegan was
set with the task of gathering do-
nations, via neighbors and col-
leagues. Donations from family
members are not acceptable, as
part of the project is learning to
be resourceful to raise appropri-
ate funds.
Its part of the whole Boy
Scout pledge, Keegan said.
Its very involved, but it defi-
nitely teaches the kids to plans
and be a leader, Jane said.
Though there is a learning
process within the process of
completing such involved Eagle
Scout projects, while simply try-
ing to finish out his senior year,
Keegan seemed grateful to partic-
ipate in such a unique service
project.
After the collection process is
completed, Keegan plans to sepa-
rate the DVDs by genre, then
build and transport a permanent
shelving device to the shelter.
The only restriction on the
DVDs for Crossroads is that they
do not accept titles rated R. The
last day to donate DVDs to collec-
tion boxes is March 9. For more
information about helping Cross-
roads as Keegan is doing with the
Eagle Scouts, please visit

time.
For me, the hardest race is the 100
freestyle. It's a sprint, so everything has to
be perfect, or else you don't have a chance
of doing well, Fontaine said. I'd rather
swim longer races than shorter ones be-
cause you have more time to get into a
rhythm, and make up for any mistakes
you've made earlier in the race. For me,
they are easier to swim because they cause
me less stress and anxiety. While I don't re-
ally have a favorite race to swim, breast
stroke is my least favorite stroke.
To swim as fast as possible in all races,
Fontaine has a meditative-like ritual to
help her power through the short and
sometimes vigorous races.
Before swimming the race, I really try
to focus and visualize the way I'm going to
swim it, Fontaine said.
The girls swim team prepares for compe-
titions, no matter how big or small the
stakes. Team preparations include activi-
ties quite opposite to quiet visualization
and thought, but Fontaine still appreciated
the preps this season.
Before every meet, we listen to music
on the bus and in the locker room to get
everyone excited and ready to swim fast.
Right before our meets start, we do our
good luck cheer and talk to our coaches,
who are always really excited and support-
ive, Fontaine said.
Before swimming for HMHS, Fontaine
was swimming on other Haddonfield-asso-
ciated teams.
This is my second year swimming for
HMHS. Other than swimming for the high
school, I swim for a club team called South
Jersey Aquatic Club year round, and Had-
don Glen swim club as I grew older, I
began to excel more in the freestyle and
distance events, which broadened my hori-
zons as a swimmer, Fontaine said.
Swimming for many different teams on
many different levels has taught Fontaine
not just about the sport itself, but also
about practical life matters.
Swimming has taught me dedication
and time management. It has also taught
me how to prioritize, an important skill to
have when trying to decide between club
swimming, high school swimming, school-
work, while trying to have fun at least once
in awhile, she said. Without swimming, I
would not have these skills that I think
have improved me as a person and better
prepared me for the future.
Though only 15 years old, Fontaine
would like swimming to be a part of her fu-
ture.
I definitely have plans to swim in col-

ear Mother Nature: We re-
spectfully request that you
stop dumping loads of snow
upon us. Yes, we realize that we were
hoping for a snow day or two at the be-
ginning of the season. And yes, we re-
alize we were praying for colder tem-
peratures during last summers heat
wave. But this is a little nuts, dont you
think?
Seriously, Mother Nature, look what
you have done to us:
You broke a 130-year-old record
this year when you dumped more than
six inches of snow on us in four sepa-
rate storms in one season.
You have crippled traffic, causing
major motor vehicle accidents and de-
laying planes in and out of airports
for days on end.
You have caused local schools to
delay their openings, close early and
close for the full day so many times
that this school year may end only
days before the next one begins.
You have caused us to run out of
salt. Yep, its all gone. And were hav-
ing trouble getting more. Who would
have thought that a shipping law
would stand in our way of making our
roads safer?
Mother Nature, oh powerful one,
wielder of our wintery fate, please
have mercy on us. We beg you to get us
through these last few weeks of winter
unscathed.
We ask you to forgive our similar
pleas for an end to summertime heat.
We were misguided in our thoughts
then, and we hope to not be as mis-
guided next time around.
We promise that well put every-
thing in perspective when we wish for
warmer weather, colder weather,
dryer weather or wetter weather.
And we promise, oh how we prom-
ise, to enjoy every day of sunshine you
give us this spring before youre sure
to reign down your fury with swelter-
ing temperatures this summer. At
least well have the sea and our pools
to cool us down.
Our plea to Mother Nature...
...Be kind to us the rest of this winter

Im a mother and a
resident and I want to
know that the places
Im taking my chil-
dren to eat are clean.
In Camden County,
all parents and resi-
dents have access to
this pertinent infor-
mation to make in-
formed choices.
The Freeholder Board provides ac-
cessible digital Health Department in-
spections of food serving facilities on
our website to strengthen our com-
mitment to protecting the health and
welfare of our community. Since the
programs inception, thousands of
Camden County residents have vis-
ited www.camdencounty.com to check
on their favorite restaurant or their
childs school cafeteria.
Camden County Health Depart-
ment inspectors utilize an electronic
process to record the information
they gather. This has increased the ef-
ficiency and effectiveness of the food
inspection process. It uses standard-
ized language and methods to report
food protection results. Previously,
restaurant inspections were con-
ducted using a paper form process.
The system also reports the stan-
dards that the establishment has suc-
cessfully met as well as any violations
noted at the time of inspection. This
will make the inspection report
clearer for both operators and con-
sumers. By putting our inspection re-
ports online, the inspection process
has been streamlined, compliance
among restaurants has increased,
and most importantly, it is more
transparent and easily-accessible for
residents.
Using a Tablet PC to complete the
State mandated inspection checklist,
inspectors report the compliance sta-
tus of the retail food establishment
observed at the time of the inspection
in a more efficient
manner. The database
information of ap-
proximately 3,500 ven-
ues also lists
ownership (local and
corporate), mailing ad-
dresses, e-mail ad-
dresses, food handler
information, risk type
information, etc.
In addition to the restaurant in-
spections, reports are also posted for
all school cafeterias and other food-
handling enterprises in Camden
County. Again, as a mother of four
children, I can truly appreciate this
service because we need to know that
when we send our kids off to school
in the morning, were sending them
to an environment that is safe in
every way. Whether or not our chil-
drens school cafeteria is safe and san-
itary is not something a parent
should have to worry about. This is a
tool that can either help eliminate
that fear, or be used as an instrument
of change if it looks like improve-
ments need to be made.
To access the service, visit
www.camdencounty.com and click on
Restaurant Inspection Reports under
the Health Tab. You can then search
by the establishments name or by
municipality. You can also register to
receive e-mail alerts when new re-
ports are posted for your favorite
restaurants or when the Camden
County Health Department issues
food-related alerts. For other informa-
tion, contact the Camden County De-
partment of Health and Human

lege, but I'm not sure about pro-
fessionally. Professional swim-

sport, takes an insane amount of
focus and dedication, Fontaine
said.
Closer to her heart at the mo-
ment are dreams about the out-
come of Fontaines season next
year with the HMHS swim team.
I think everyone's really excit-
ed for next year's swim season, be-
cause this year's team had many
talented freshmen who added
strength and depth to the team. I
know that they will help the team
do great things in the future,
Fontaine said.
The girls finished 7-5 overall,
with a record of 5-4 in the regular
season. Next year, the girls have
some room for improvement,
which is especially possible with
members such as Fontaine.
I've coached at Haddonfield
about 20 years and although I be-
lieve there is no limit to what So-
phie can accomplish, her remark-
able time this early in her high
school career in the 200 free must
rank her high in the history of
that event in New Jersey swim-
ming, and therefore make it hard-
er on future Haddonfield swim-
mers to surpass, Querubin said.
While the team season is over,
individual swimmers from
HMHS have one last chance to
compete in individual state cham-
pionship meets, on March 1 and 2.
The meets will take place at
Gloucester County Institute of
Technology, and will put Fontaine
against top contenders from dif-
ferent schools in the state. Abby
Czerniecki and Abbey Neveling
will also be competing for HMHS.
I'm really excited for that meet
because there are a lot of fast
swimmers in every race, which
pushes HMHS swimmers to go
faster and faster, Fontaine said.

The Haddonfield Outdoor
Sculpture Trust has received its
first private contribution. A dona-
tion of $3,700 from Haddonfield
attorney and internationally rec-
ognized corporate compliance ex-
pert Joseph Murphy was given to
the Trust.
Joe Murphys generosity is
precisely the kind of support that
is going to make our vision of
transforming Haddonfield from a
walkable, attractive and histori-
cally significant borough, into a
significant center for juried out-
door sculpture in the great tradi-
tion of public art, HOST chair
Stuart Harting said.
The trust, in cooperation with
the borough, is creating a public
and private outdoor art initiative.
Downtown locations in
Haddonfield will display rotation-
al, contemporary outdoor sculp-
ture.
On June 8, the trust unveiled
its first public placement at the
intersection of Haddon Avenue,
Mechanic Street, and Clement
Street.
That initial installation was ti-
tled Uno, by Miguel Antonio
Horn of Bala Cynwyd.
Horn is a graduate in sculpture
from the Pennsylvania Academy
of Fine Arts.
This sculpture was last exhibit-
ed at the Brownsville Museum of
Fine Art in Texas. In conjunction
with the trust, new sculptures,
like Horns, will be popping up
around town.
Haddonfields town wide gift
certificates are always a popular
purchase for downtown shoppers
during the holiday season, when
the cards are offered at a 10 per-
cent discount. That popularity
jumped in bounds when, for the
first time ever, the Partnership
for Haddonfield held a flash sale
on these gift certificates in 2013 to
incentivize last-minute shopping
and gift giving. From Dec. 22 to
the 24, the cards were offered at
an unprecedented 20 percent dis-
count for just three days. The gift
cards were exclusively sold at the
Information Center. Within three
hours of the 20 percent discount
sales launch, $34,000 in gift certifi-
cates were sold.
The flash sale was incredi-
ble, said the Partnership for
Haddonfield Retail Recruiter
Remi Fortunato. People lined up
at the Information Center on Dec.
22, and just like that, we sold out
of every gift certificate designat-
ed for a 20 percent discount.
Due to popular demand, and
the tremendous success of the
2013 flash sale, The PFH plans to
hold more gift certificate flash
sales in 2014. Dates and times for
these sales will be announced
within hours of the sale dates, so
Haddonfield shoppers are encour-
aged to keep an eye on the down-
town Haddonfield website,
www.downtownhaddonfield.com,
or www.facebook.com/Down-
town.Haddonfield.
