The Court Mediation Program Small Claims Practicum The Court Mediation Program

is a Program of Mediate BC Society. The Program started in 1998 when a need was recognized for aspiring mediators to gain experience after receiving formal training. Since then the Program has attracted individuals from diverse backgrounds such as real estate, government, health care, education, and the legal eld. Mediate BC Society is a not for prot society committed to providing people with practical, accessible and affordable choices to prevent, manage and resolve disputes. While specializing in mediation, the Society also has expertise and experience in a wide variety of dispute resolution tools and processes. We help individuals, families and organizations by providing mediation information, services and programs and provide training, professional development and resources to mediators and other dispute resolution professionals.

I have mediation training but I dont know where to get real life experience. I would be better at what I do if I developed my listening and communication skills. I would like to see some experienced mediators in action and learn from them. Im the problem solver at work and Id like more skills to take me to the next level.

The mentors level of involvement depends on the practicum mediators skill and comfort level as well as the complexity of the case. Written feedback from the mentor is provided at the end of each session.

What happens during the practicum?


Our practicum uses a unique model which enables the practicum mediator to practice mediation skills as they assist parties to resolve their disputes in a court setting. Participants attend two mandatory orientation sessions and mediate 10 Small Claims cases.
