Description
Shigella Dysenteriae (Shiga 1898), Homeop: Bacillus Dys. There are four subtypes; 90% are (S flexneri, S. sonnei), S boydii, S dysenteriae (virulent). All the types can cause shigellosis (bacillary or epidemic dysentery), It accounts for 20% diarrhoea worldwide, 600K fatalities per year. Facultative anaerobe related to E col. It does not ferment CBH, It produces bacillus dysentery / shigellosis and fever, common cause of travellers diarrhoea, some strains produce shiga toxin. There are some associations with arthritis and reiter's syndrome in the HLA B27 genotype Cats injected with shiga toxin produce behavioural changes resemble those from 5HT -> become quiet and hesitant, then trembling.
