How to Care For Cartilage and Oral Piercings

When caring for cartilage piercings (ear, nose) here are some tips:

1. Don’t use Q-tips or Kleenex on it. The cotton fibres and dust can get
caught up inside your piercing.
2. Pillowcases must be changed at least twice a week, if not more.
3. Hair is meant to be kept off your piercing. Your hair collects dirt and oil
and can cause infection if it gets inside your piercing.
4. Keep makeup off and away from your piercing. This can also cause
irritation or infection.

What to expect:
There is a risk of scar tissue called hypertrophic forming. It is a raised red
bump around or to the side of your piercing. This is caused by stress or trauma to
your piercing. This isn’t permanent but can cause your piercing to heal crooked if
not looked after.

Oral Piercings (tongue)

For cleaning you should rinse with mouthwash. You should not use
mouthwash that has alcohol in it. It will burn on your piercing and could cause
infection. You should expect some swelling and it may bleed for a few days
after getting pierced. The swelling is minimal if you keep ice on it. You can
take pain killers and eat cold things like ice-cream, popsicles and slurpees for
pain relief. Glands along your neck may also swell. Tongue rinsing should be
done for three weeks. After three weeks you can cut down to rinsing after big
meals, smoking, and drinking alcohol. Avoid spicy, salty, or citrus foods. They
will burn and sting very much. Infections in your mouth are very uncommon. If
you experience a greenish
coloured discharge
accompanied by pain and
swelling, call your piercer. Call
before going to a doctor, they
will often recommend taking
the jewellery out and
prescribe antibiotics. Both are
not necessary.

can happen if your oral piercing
gets infected.

Mostly As…
You’re a regular ear lobe piercing. Boring, longing to
be accepted, laid back and tiresome. Get a little crazy
sometime. It works wonders.

Mostly Bs…
You’re a Lip/Labret piercing. Laid back and easy with
pain. You love to make people laugh but you’re not
too crazy.

Mostly Cs…
You’re a tongue piercing.
You go with the flow and love to be wild. You’re
outgoing and enjoy fried foods.

Mostly Ds…
You’re a surface piercing.
You’re insane and have the highest threshold of pain.
I love you, you are my hero. You also love tacos,
most likely, which is fantastic. You probably also like
salad. Salad is good.

How to Care For Navel, Septum, Nipple, Eyebrow, Earlobe, Lip, and Labret
Piercings

First of all, some things to expect with these

sorts of piercings are itchiness, swelling, and
bruising. Touching your piercing is the fastest way
to get an infection as well as irritate your piercing,
so no touchy touchy! If your piercing is constantly
under stress from hats, belts, clothing, etc. or being
played with constantly, it will slow the healing
process. This irritation will cause your body to build
up excess scar tissue, which is not a desirable
result. Excess scar tissue on one side of the
piercing will often cause it to heal crooked like this.


For cleaning, your piercer will provide you

with a saline solution. If you run out of the
solution you can make your own (1/4 teaspoon
non-iodized sea salt per one cup of water) or use
contact lens solution. Don’t use rubbing alcohol,
peroxide, iodine, hibitane, bioseptic, witch hazel,
tea tree oil, antibacterial soap, Epsom/table salt
or polysporin. Using these can lead to chemical
reactions, dry flakey skin and infection like
symptoms.

Some piercings aren’t permanent. Your body can push the jewellery closer
to the surface of your skin. Ask your piercer if you think this is happening. If your
body pushes it out all the way it will result in a bigger scar than if you take it out.
After you take out the piercing it is possible to get the piercing done again.

You should always feel comfortable asking a question. You also should
never feel stupid by doing so. The only stupid questions are the ones that you
don’t ask.

Tattoos: Harmles or DEADLY?

Did you realize that your

little tattoo can be contracting a
deadly blood-born disease?
These include AIDS, Hepatitis
B, Hepatitis C, Tetanus,
Syphilis and Tuberculosis.
Commercial tattoos have
actually proved to be the
number one distributor of
Hepatitis C! They’re also
accounted for more than twice
as many infections than
injection drug use. Tattoos just
may be the biggest single
contributor to the nation-wide
epidemic of this type of Hepatitis. Hepatitis C kills over ten thousand
people a year. Four million Americans are infected and rising. Guess what
the number one channel for it is? That’s right. Tattoos.

Hepatitis B can be transmitted with as

little as 0.00004 ml of blood. It can also live on
blood contaminated surfaces such as needles
and tables. It is strongly advised that people with
tattoos should get Hepatitis checks. Anyone who
gets a tattoo risks disease and infection. This
news is not new, infact, it has been documented
for years.

In 1853 was the first report of Syphilis

transmitted not the old fashioned way, but
through the tattooist’s needle. In the late 1950s,
a New York boy got blood poisoning from being
tattooed with an unsterilized needle. In 1961
outbreak of disease in New York City was linked to tattoos. They were
banned in New York City from 1961 to 1997. There are actually very little
state laws enforcing serious sterilization of equipment. It is up to the shop
owner to decide how well they sterilize their equipment.

Tattoos are very vulnerable because of the amount of puncture
wounds being made. Besides the possibility of fatal diseases, they can
also cause chronic skin disorders such as sarcoid, keloid scarring, allergic
dermatitis, photosensitivity reactions, psoriasis, and benign or malignant
tumours. Pigments in the tattoo ink actually contain small metal fibres
such as iron oxide. These can cause extreme burning pain during an MRI
procedure. Some medical institutions won’t even perform an MRI on
people with tattoos due to the
risk they’d be taking.

Basically, if you’re
getting a tattoo look for health
inspection certificates. If you’ve
already got one, get checked
for diseases.

Interview

I am interviewing Liezl Jupiter because I thought she would be an

interesting person to talk to about her views on tattoos and piercings.

Jeanine: What are your views on tattoos and piercings?

Liezl: I think they’re cool.

Jeanine: Would you ever get a tattoo or piercing?

Liezl: Just a tattoo.

Jeanine: What type of tattoo would you get?

Liezl: Something that means a lot to me.

Jeanine: Why wouldn’t you get any piercings?

Liezl: I don’t like needles.

Jeanine: How could you get a tattoo if you don’t like needles?
Liezl: A tattoo would be more meaningful instead of just a hole in your body.

Jeanine: I see, and what are your biggest fears with piercings?
Liezl: I just don’t want scars.

Jeanine: Ah, well, what are your biggest fears with tattoos? Do you have any?
Liezl: I’m afraid that my skin will peel off in the shape of the tattoo like I saw
somewhere else.

Jeanine: That’s disgusting, but if you keep up the care on your tattoo with lotion
and everything it won’t happen. Back to the interview, why do you like tattoos?
Liezl: They’re so pretty.

Jeanine: Where would you get a tattoo?

Liezl: On my arm or back.

Jeanine: Would you ever get someone’s name tattooed on your body or do you
thing that’s stupid? Why or why not?
Liezl: Yeah if it’s someone important in your life and you put their name on your
body it shows they mean a lot to you.

Jeanine: Thank you Liezl for sharing your views on tattoos and piercings. This
brings us to the end of our interview.

Tattoo Cleaning
Everyone in this industry will have different
philosophies and different advice to give you on
how you should take care of your tattoo. So,
we've taken some of the most important tattoo
tips and put them together for you in a list.
1. Sun block - After a tattoo is healed, apply a
high SPF sun block to keep the colours
bright and beautiful.
2. Lotion - Once a tattoo is "healed" the area
is still somewhat dry. Applying lotion on a
regular basis will do your tattoo wonders.
3. Itching - Never pick or scratch at a healing
tattoo. This will cause your tattoo to form
colourless patches. A light slap will get rid of
the itching sensation.
4. Drinking - Don't drink alcohol 48 hours prior
to getting tattooed. This will thin out your
blood, weakening your system. Caffeine,
acetecylic acid (Tylenol, Aspirin, Ibuprofen)
and anti-coagulants will also have the same
affect on your blood.
5. Eating - A good meal before you get
tattooed is always a good idea.
