Spleen Strengthening Foods ETIOLOGY.

Spleen encompasses the entire digestive system of the body and is responsible for the fundamental transformation and transportation of food into energy in the body. Possible causes for spleen deficiency include poor nourishment and diet, excessive consumption of cold raw foods or over consumption of refined highly processed foods. Irregular eating habits, eating on the run and excessive eating also injure the spleen. Excessive over thinking, mental strain, prolonged exposure to dampness or chronic disease can also cause spleen deficiency. SYMPTOMS. No appetite or poor appetite. Bloating after meals, abdominal pain, vomiting, tiredness, lassitude, general weakness, bouts of fatigue and lethargy, somnolence, sallow complexion, fainting spells, lethargic voice, emaciation. Weakness if the limbs, edema, diarrhea or constipation, excessive bleeding, excess menstrual flow or amenorrhea, wheezing feeling of heaviness, easily bruised, difficulty acclimating to new ideas. CONDITIONS. Chronic fatigue, Chronic gastritis, hepatitis, enteritis, prolapse of uterus or stomach, peptic or duodenal ulcers, menorrhegia, nervous dyspepsia, dysentery, anemia. Blood Circulation Promoting Foods


ETIOLOGY. When blood circulation is impaired, it can coagulate and congeal resulting in blood stagnation. Causes include traumatic injury, blood deficiency, qi deficiency or damp phlegm accumulation. SYMPTOMS. Intense fixed piercing stabbing pain, accumulation and lumps that are immobile and hard to the touch. Dark facial complexion, dry scaly itchy skin, tortuous purplish veins, hematomas, yellowish brown or grey blue maculae (liver or age spots), purple lips and nails. ETIOLOGY. Cold patterns usually arise from lack of physical activity, eating or drinking too much cold food stuffs. Insufficient warming foods in the diet, cold environment or insufficient natural endowment.

SYMPTOMS. Chills, aversion to cold, attraction to warmth. Yang Tonifying Foods


ETIOLOGY. In Chinese Medicine the Yang energy of the body is responsible for warming and energizing the body, it is responsible for all major functional aspects of the body. The key Yang energy arises from the Kidneys. Kidney Yang energy tends to wean with age and can further be depleted with chronic illness, insufficient natural endowment, excessive sexual activity at young age, use of recreational drugs, poor nutrition, and excessive physical and emotional strain. SYMPTOMS. Low back and knee soreness, pain and weakness is a predominant symptom as well as aversion to cold, cold extremities, sensation of cold in low back and genitals, frequent or inhibited urination, diarrhea before dawn, loose sloppy stools, impotence and erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, infertility, edema that is severe in lower parts of the body. Asthma, shortness of breath, difficulty inhaling completely, coughing, or panting, palpitations, perspiration on forehead, tinnitus, lack of willpower or direction, mental lethargy, poor spirit, apathy, fatigue, poor appetite, pale complexion, hair loss. In females menstruation is irregular and there may be vaginal discharge that is clear and profuse.

ETIOLOGY. In Chinese Medicine the Yin energy is responsible for nourishing and revitalizing the body. When emotions, especially repressed or excessive anger and frustration, resentment and excessive alcohol use injure the liver, the function is impaired. SYMPTOMS. Distention in the chest and hypochondria, flank pain, sighing hiccups, melancholy, depression, moodiness, fluctuations of mental states.
