CCB 2073 Jan 2014 Objectives

Page |4

The main objective of the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory is to adapt the students in analyzing experimental data. It is important for the students to understand the theories they study in lecture and in their textbooks. In addition, laboratory experimentation provides opportunity to the students to learn how to write clear and concise scientific reports. It will be a strong emphasis in this course to

get the student familiarized with the analytical equipment.

Laboratory Location: Experiments 1-5 will be conducted at the following laboratories, respectively: Experiments 1 2 3 4 5 Laboratory Location 05-00-06 04-02-09 05-00-06, 05-00-09 05-00-08 05-00-06, 04-02-09

Laboratory Safety Safe practices in the laboratory are of high importance. The general rules and regulation in the laboratory while conducting experiments are as follows:

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) All students are COMPULSORY to wear lab-coat and covered shoes all the time in the laboratory. Safety goggle and gloves are necessary when handling chemical reagents.

CCB 2073 Jan 2014 General Rules of Safety and Precautions 1. Food or drinks are not allowed in the laboratory.

Page |5

2. Familiarized with the location of the safety equipment such as eye wash, shower and fire extinguishers. 3. Pay full attention to all instructions presented by the instructor. Do not conduct any unauthorized experiment. Consult instructor if something is not clear. 4. Avoid contact your skin with chemicals. If contact does occur, wash the area contacted thoroughly with water. Report all accidents to the instructor immediately. 5. Consult instructor before dispose any waste chemicals. 6. Use all heating and electrical equipment carefully to avoid any burns and shocks. 7. NEVER handle broken glassware with your hands. 8. After the experiment is completed, turn off all equipment and clean your area.

Pre-Experimental Preparation A proper planning is crucial before carry out any of the experiment. Students will not be granted
extra time to complete the laboratory. Students are required to read the procedure and theory of the experiment carefully before arriving at the laboratory. It is important to prepare a brief outline (or flow-chart) before start of experiment and to organize the format of the data section before coming to the laboratory so that you will only need to record your data and observations during the experiment.

CCB 2073 Jan 2014 Format Report Writing (Group Report)

Page |6

As part of post-laboratory exercise, all the groups are required to submit laboratory report for each of the experiment. The format and content of the report are as follows:

Cover Page Experimental number and title, Name for all the group members, date of the experiment and report submission deadline. For example:

CCB 2073 Jan 2014 Introduction

Page |8

Write a brief statement or a paragraph to describe the objective of the experiment and the method used. State the purpose of the experiment.

Experimental Procedure
A brief description of the experiment steps and a drawing of the apparatus should be included.

Data and Observations Report all the measurements or data collected during the experiment, including the units of the data. The use of table or graph is suggested. For the experiments 3-6, attach the spectra, graphs, charts or other data that produced during the experiment.

Calculation and Discussion Calculations: If the experiment involves calculation, perform a sample analysis of the data that was collected during the experiment prior to calculation. Use an appropriate equation. Discussion: Include an interpretation of the data that you observed and understand the data. Explain how the data fit your hypotheses. If not, discuss why. Include also possible sources of error. Refer to the Questions section which may help to guide your discussion of the data.

Questions Questions are provided in the manual and all assigned questions are answered in this section.

Conclusions Report the outcome of the experiment.

CCB 2073 Jan 2014 Report Grading

Page |9

The laboratory contributes overall 20% of the total grading in this course. Therefore, a student must complete all of the assigned laboratory work including report submission. All groups are required to submit five reports, 100% will be allocated for each of the report based on the following criteria: preparedness, cleanliness, following safety rules, following instructions, taking notes during laboratory report attendance (0 % for those absent)

The report must be completed and submit to Lecturer within 1 week, by the next scheduled
laboratory date. Late submission of your report will be met with a 10% deduction.
