Also, SONAR needs to be opened at least once before you can install CakeTalking. So, you need to both install SONAR, and open it at least once. This document will instruct you how to nstall SONAR without sighted assistance. !irst there will be an o"er"iew of what you are going to be doing. Then there will be concise step by step instructions. #on$t install SONAR, until you ha"e read the O"er"iew. Then, install SONAR, by following the Step by Step nstructions. OVERVIEW. %. All you will need to install SONAR, is the SONAR nstallation C# or #&#, and your SONAR Serial number. 'hile installing SONAR, the serial number should be stored e(ternally to the computer that you are installing SONAR on. That way you can refer to it without mo"ing away from the current SONAR nstallation screen. So ha"e a )raille copy of it, or ha"e it on some other medium that you can access. *. On the plastic container of your SONAR C#, there is a sticker with your Serial Number. t contains letters and numbers. +ou$ll be prompted to type it, when the ,et Registration dialog pops up. -. After you insert the SONAR nstallation C# into your C# RO. dri"e, SONAR$s auto run feature will bring up an installation screen. This screen is inaccessible without a mouse. So, instead of keeping this inaccessible screen open, you will be closing by it pressing /SCA0/. Then, you will install SONAR by typing a path in the Run dialog. 1. +ou open the Run dialog by holding down the 'indows key, and tapping the letter R, then letting go. The Run dialog will open. +ou will be typing a path that begins with the letter of your C# RO.. This letter of the C# RO., is different on different computer systems. So, before installing SONAR, you should know what your C# RO.$s dri"e letter is. 2. Assuming that your C# RO.$s dri"e letter is the letter #, then type the following path into the Run dialog e(actly as it appears below3 d34 nstall4Setup 5. 'hen you type the path, and then press /NT/R, SONAR$s Setup program will begin. 6. )efore SONAR will actually start installing, numerous dialogs will be opened for you, that re7uest information. .ost of the time, all you ha"e to do is O8 the dialogs settings, and thus mo"e to the ne(t one. 9. .ost of the SONAR installation dialogs ha"e - buttons. The )ack, Ne(t and Cancel buttons. The Ne(t button is always the default button. So, pressing /NT/R in a dialog, will close that dialog, and open the ne(t one. f you wish to return to the prior dialog, then TA) to the back button, and press /NT/R. f you wish to e(it the setup, then press the cancel button, or :ust press /SCA0/. ;. #uring the installation of SONAR, you usually ha"e the option of 7uitting the installation, without any problem at all. <ust press the

Cancel button. A dialog will then pop up telling you that Setup is not complete. There will be * buttons. The default button is the Resume button. The other button is the /(it Setup button. So, if you really wish to e(it the installation, TA) to the /(it Setup button, and press /NT/R. +ou will wait a few minutes while SONAR installs into your computer. %=. After the main part of the nstallation is complete, another 1 dialogs will open asking you "arious 7uestions that you can mostly say yes to. %%. !inally, SONAR will start to open automatically. Then there may be - dialogs that will test your soundcard. %*. Then, you may get a SONAR dialog asking you to configure your . # de"ices. +ou will /SCA0/ from this dialog because it won>t be necessary to do this until after you install CakeTalking. +ou may also get a tip of the day dialog, and another help dialog. Again, you will escape from these dialogs. The main thing is to :ust get into the main SONAR window. Then when the main SONAR window opens, you mo"e around in it a little, and then close it. !inally, you reboot the computer, and then install CakeTalking. %-. <A'S will not automatically read to you all of the information in the SONAR installation dialogs, unless your <A'S screen echo is set to all. The default setting for screen echo is set to highlighted. To change it to A??, press NS/RT@S, until you hear <A'S say AA??.A 'hen you are done with the installation, remember to return screen echo to Bighlighted. <ust press NS/RT@S, until you hear <A'S say ABighlighted.A STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE FOR INSTALLING SONAR. %. 'ith the computer turned on, close all open programs e(cept for <A'S. *. Open up the computers C# by pushing the C#$s openCclose button. 0ut the SONAR C# in the tray, and close it by pressing the button again. -. 'ait a minute until the SONAR Auto run acti"ates. 'hen it does, an inaccessible SONAR installation screen will pop up. <A'S will say SONAR Auto Run. +ou$ll hear music, and a SONAR sound effect. 0ress /SCA0/ to close this inaccessible screen. 1. 0ress 'indows key @ R. Turn your <A'S screen echo to all by pressing NS/RT@S, until <A'S says AA??A. 6. 0ress /NT/R, and the Run dialog will close and SONAR$s 'elcome dialog will pop up. t reminds you that all opened programs should be closed before proceeding. Of course, you should lea"e <A'S open. Since the default button is the Ne(t button, press /NT/R to continue. 9. The ne(t dialog is the Software ?icense Agreement. Dnless you want to be tortured listening to the terms of the agreement, press /NT/R. ;. The ne(t dialog is the ,et Registration nformation dialog. This has three edit fields. The first one you will find yourself in is the Name edit field. TA) once and you will be in the Company edit field. TA) once again and you will be in the Serial Number edit field. +ou ha"e to fill in the Name, and the Serial Number fields. The company field is

optional. %=. 'hen you ha"e finished typing the information, press /NT/R. f you did not type your serial number correctly, then the n"alid Serial Number dialog will pop up, telling you to type it again. So, you would press /NT/R to return to the ,et Registration dialog. Then TA) until you get to the serial number edit field, and carefully type your serial number. Then press /NT/R. %%. The Select components dialog will open. This contains 5 check bo(es that are checked by default. /ach check bo( refers to a particular part of the program that is going to be installed. Dnless you are an e(pert, and know how to do a custom installation, press /NT/R to O8 the dialog. %*. The Choose #estination ?ocation dialog will open. )y default, SONAR will choose the 0rogram !iles folder on your C dri"e, as the default dri"e and folder to install SONAR into. 0ress /NT/R to accept. Bowe"er, if you are an e(pert, you can choose another dri"e and folder path to install SONAR into. <ust TA) to the )rowse button, and press S0AC/. The Select #estination #irectory will open. t has an edit field, where you can type an alternati"e path for SONAR to install into. Type your path, then press /NT/R to return to the Choose #estination ?ocation dialog. Then press /NT/R to go to the Ne(t installation dialog. %-. The Shared 0lug in !older #estination dialog will open. This :ust informs you where . # , #E , and Dtilities plug ins will be installed. <ust press /NT/R. %1. The Select 0rogram .anager ,roup dialog will pop up. 0ress /NT/R to accept the default 0rogram .anager that 'indows will add * SONAR icons to. %2. The Start nstallation dialog will pop up. This is your last opportunity to abort the installation by pressing the Cancel button. Otherwise, press /NT/R and the nstallation will start. %5. <ust sit back and listen as <A'S blabs away. After a few minutes, the Associate !iles 'ith SONAR dialog will pop up. %6. The Associate !iles 'ith SONAR dialog contains ; checkbo(es. The first - are checked by default. The other 5 can be checked if you want SONAR to be the program that open those sort of files by default. TA) to each one, and check them with the S0AC/ bar. Then press /NT/R. %9. The nstallation Complete dialog will open. t contains checkbo(es. The launch SONAR, the &iew Read me, and the add shortcut to desktop checkbo(es. They are all checked. +ou don$t need to "iew the Read .e file at this time. So, TA) to the &iew Read me check bo(, and uncheck it with the S0AC/ bar. Then 0ress /NT/R. %;. The .igrate SONAR preferences dialog will open. This will import some of the settings that you had in a pre"ious installation of SONAR or Cakewalk. 0ress /NT/R to say +es. Or, TA) to the Cancel button, and press /NT/R to accept SONAR$s default settings. *=. The Retain SONAR 0references dialog may open. t contains a list with paths to nitialiFation files that SONAR can migrate older Cakewalk preferences from. f you ha"e Cakewalk installed, then it will migrate preferences from Cakewalk$s nitialiFation files. 0ress /NT/R to say yes. Or, TA) to the Cancel button, and press /NT/R to accept SONAR$s default settings. *%. The 'a"e 0rofiler dialog will open. This will test your sound card. 0ress /NT/R. **. Another 'a"e 0rofiler dialog will open telling you that your sound card has been detected, and would you like to use the standard settings. Say yes, by pressing /NT/R. *-. A final 'a"e 0rofiler dialog will pop up telling you that your Audio Bardware has been successfully profiled. 0ress /NT/R.

*1. f any of the sound producing de"ices on your computer are not compatible with SONAR, the Audio #ri"er /rror dialog will open. t will contain a list of the incompatible de"ices. These de"ices may be things like your &oice .odem, or a ,ame Compatible de"ice. The default button is the #isable button. There$s also the Dse Anyway button. 0ress /nter, to #isable those de"ices in SONAR. *2. SONAR will open. The Choose . # #e"ices dialog may open. 0ress /scape until it closes. t does not need to be configured until after installing CakeTalking. *5. A Tip of the #ay dialog, and another Belp dialog may open. 0ress /scape to close them. SONAR$s main window will then open. *6. +ou need to mo"e around a little in SONAR$s main window with the right and left arrows. Then press /NT/R. An /dit field will probably open. Then press /SCA0/ to e(it the edit field. *9. Now you can close SONAR, by pressing A?T@!1. A dialog will pop up asking you if you want to sa"e changes. 0ress /SCA0/, and SONAR will close. *;.
