Setting the origin

At the factory, the alignment table top has been designated as the origin of the SD scale.
If the [ORIGIN] or [ZERO/ABS] button has been accidentally pressed, restore the original
condition according to the following procedure.

• If the [ORIGIN] button has been pressed:

Lower the detector until the stylus comes to the
same height as that of the alignment table top.
Hold the [ORIGIN] button down for more than one
second at this stylus position. Zero will be
displayed on the LCD of the SD scale, and the
origin will be restored.

• If the [ZERO/ABS] button has been pressed:

Hold down the [ZERO/ABS] button again for
more than two seconds. The character string INC disappears from the LCD of the SD
scale, and the original condition is restored.

TIP • If the SD scale surface is stained, "ErrC" will be displayed on the LCD or the displayed
value will fluctuate. It is advisable to clean the scale surface and apply a small amount
of low-viscosity oil to repel water.
• If the Up/Down Feed knob is turned too quickly, the least significant digit on the LCD
may display ”E”, but measurement will not be affected. Continue the measurement
operation. If the SD scale surface is stained, “E” may be displayed on the LCD in the
position of the least significant digit. Clean the scale surface.

3.3 Performing Measurement/Analysis Using the Keys

to Call Conditions
3.3.1 What are the keys to call conditions for?
The keys to call conditions are keys used to register and call calibration ratio,
centering/leveling conditions and measurement conditions.

Registered conditions can be called all together at once by pressing the key to call
conditions. This saves the procedure of setting conditions otherwise needed for each time.
Four keys 1 through 4 are available allowing four sets of conditions to be registered
according to the workpieces to be measured.

Conditions that can be registered on the keys to call conditions are the following three
kinds.
Any combination of the following condition items can be registered:

(1) Calibration ratios

(2) Centering/leveling conditions

(3) Measurement conditions

*Refer to “7. Condition Registration” for the procedures of registration of conditions on the
keys to call conditions.

This chapter describes the procedures of performing measurement by automatically

calling the conditions with the use of the keys to call conditions.
Refer to “5. Centering/Leveling Measurement” and “6. Measurement/Analysis” for the
procedures of manual setup of each condition.

conditions

No. 99MBB203A 3-7

Measurement examples with the use of the keys to call conditions

NOTE To perform measurement with higher accuracy in the range of ±100μm or lower, take the
following into consideration:
• Slight fluctuation takes place in detector displacement immediately after the detector
has been changed in orientation from the vertical to horizontal or vise versa or shifted
along the X or Z-axis. So, allow dozens of seconds for the detector to stabilize before
commencing measuring. When shifting the detector in the Z-axis direction, reciprocate
the detector a few times in the vertical direction for running-in around a target position
and finally stop the detector in position while shifting it upward. This reduces fluctuations
that may take place immediately after the detector shifting
• The effect of table speed fluctuation upon the start of table rotation can be reduced by
commencing measurement well after the table has started rotation.

• Consider as necessary the installation of a windbreak screen and/or vibration dumping

stand.

5 CENTERING/LEVELING
MEASUREMENT

5.1 Centering/Leveling
To perform measurement with high accuracy, it is necessary to accurately carry out
“centering” and “leveling” and correctly set up a workpiece to be measured in place. This is
an important work especially when performing measurement with a higher magnification.

Centering Leveling

▪ Centering

"Centering" is an alignment procedure for bringing the center of a measured

cross-section contour close to the axis of rotation of the alignment table so that stylus
deflection does not exceed the detecting range of the detector.

▪ Leveling

"Leveling" is an alignment procedure for adjusting the tilt of the alignment table so that a
measured cross-section contour may approach a circle.
If the axis of a cylindrical workpiece is tilted with respect to the rotational axis of the
alignment table, the measured profile will form an ellipse. This is critically detrimental to
obtaining a correct measurement.

No. 99MBB203A 5-1

To perform centering/leveling measurement efficiently, the following four kinds of
measurement procedures are provided.

▪ Single cross-section measurement for centering:

Determines a centering amount from one-cross-section data.

▪ Dual cross-section measurement for centering/leveling:

Determines both centering and leveling amounts from two-cross-section data.

▪ Single plane measurement for leveling:

Determines a leveling amount from one-plane data.

▪ Dual cross-section measurement for leveling:

Determines a leveling amount from two-cross-section data.

Also, two methods of measurement data input are available: full-circumference input and
multi-point input.
This manual explains measurement based on the full-circumference input.

5.1.1 Setting a workpiece

The measuring range of the RA-120 detector is ±1mm (±.04"). Therefore, it is necessary to
set the workpiece on the alignment table so that the stylus deflection is within the 1mm
(.04") range.

NOTE Before setting a workpiece on the alignment table be sure to confirm that the rated air
pressure has been supplied to the system.

(1) The adjustable range of the centering (CX and CY) knobs is ±3mm (±.12"). Confirm
that the rotary position of each knob is not off-center (it should be centered at the
adjustable range).

5-2 No. 99MBB203A

5. CENTERING/LEVELING MEASUREMENT

(2) Use the concentric circles scribed on the table to position a workpiece on the alignment
table so that the cross section to be measured comes as close as possible to the table
center.

Concentric circle

(3) Bring the stylus close to a measurement cross-section contour and then turn the
alignment table to check the deflection of the cross-section contour.
If the deflection exceeds 1mm(.04"), adjust the alignment table position according to the
following procedure.

1mm or less

No. 99MBB203A 5-3

(4) Place the centering CX knob in the position shown in the figure at the left, then check
the clearance between the stylus and the measurement cross-section contour.
Turn the alignment table 180° to place the CX knob in the position shown in the figure at
the right, and then again check the clearance between the stylus and the measurement
cross-section contour.
Turn the CX knob to adjust the alignment table position so that the difference between
the clearances in the original position and the post-180° rotation position of the table is
halved.

6 MEASUREMENT/
ANALYSIS

The RA-120 can execute the following ten analysis items.

▪ Roundness
▪ Coaxiality (axial element)
▪ Concentricity
▪ Circular runout (radial direction)
▪ Circular runout (axial direction)
▪ Squareness (axis reference)
▪ Squareness (plane reference)
▪ Thickness deviation
▪ Flatness (1-element)
▪ Parallelism (2-element)

Also, the RA-120 has a versatile element measurement function in addition to being able
to perform the ten basic measurements described above.
For detailed information, refer to section 6.2 "Element Measurement Procedure".

TIP ▪ To perform a high-precision measurement, it is necessary to raise the meter sensitivity

for higher-magnification measurement.

▪ It is recommendable to perform measurement at as high a measuring magnification as

possible according to the measuring accuracy required for a workpiece.

No. 99MBB203A 6-1

NOTE To perform measurement with higher accuracy in the range of ±100μm or lower, take the
following into consideration:

▪ Slight fluctuation takes place in detector displacement immediately after the detector
has been changed in orientation from the vertical to horizontal or vise versa or shifted
along the X or Z-axis. So, allow dozens of seconds for the detector to stabilize before
commencing measuring. When shifting the detector in the Z-axis direction, reciprocate
the detector a few times in the vertical direction for running-in around a target position
and finally stop the detector in position while shifting it upward. This reduces fluctuations
that may take place immediately after the detector shifting.

▪ The effect of table speed fluctuation upon the start of table rotation can be reduced by
commencing measurement well after the table has started rotation.

▪ Consider as necessary the installation of a windbreak screen and/or vibration dumping

stand.

6.2 Element Measurement Procedure
The RA-120 has a versatile element measurement function in addition to being able to
perform 10 basic measurements (described in section 6.1 Measuring Procedure of Each
Analysis Element").
In element measurement, first measure elements (cross sections) required for analysis,
and then perform analysis with a various combination of those results (a maximum of 20
items of analyses). Since this function allows a flexible measurement sequence and a wide
range of element selection, it is not necessary to measure the same element (cross
section) frequently for each analysis item.

For example, once the five cross sections (a to e) of the following workpiece have been
measured, it is possible to analyze roundness, coaxiality, circular runout, squareness, and
flatness.

Roundness: Cross section b, cross section c, cross section d

Flatness: Cross section a, cross section e

Coaxiality: Cross section b with respect to cross section c and cross

section d

Circular runout (radial direction): Cross section b with respect to cross section c and cross
section d

Squareness (axis reference): Cross section e with respect to cross section c and cross
section d

10 MAINTENANCE AND
INSPECTION
This chapter explains daily maintenance of the RA-120, including
consumables replacement and parts cleaning.

To obtain the highest performance from the RA-120 and use it safely for an extended
period, perform maintenance and inspection according to the following items.

10.1 Daily Inspection and Maintenance

10.1.1 Inspection before measurement
(1) Check the air pressure.

The air bearing employed for the turntable requires the specified air pressure 0.39MPa
(4.0kgf/cm2). Unless the required pressure is supplied, it may be damaged. Check if the
Air NG message is displayed on the LCD screen and if the pressure gage on the air
regulator unit points at less than 0.39MPa (4.0kgf/cm2).
If the air pressure is below the rated pressure, adjust it by means of the
pressure-reducing valve (see the figure below) or by increasing the pressure at the
air-source.

(2) Check the air-filter.

If water and oil mist have gathered in parts “a” and “b” as shown in the figure below,
drain the water and oil mist off the regulators. To drain them away, close the cock to halt
the air supply to the air filter unit and then push in drain cocks “c” and “d” in the figure.

No. 99MBB203A 10-1

• The amount of filtered water and oil mist depends on the state of the supplied air. For
some period after installing this system check the allowable term between drains. After
CAUTION that drain water and oil mist periodically.

(3) Check the cables and horse for proper connection.

Check if the air tube and signal cable between the main unit and air filter unit,
connecting cable of the detector, and power cord are connected properly, and if any of
them is scratched.

(4) Wipe out the rust-preventive oil.

The alignment table top is a section of great importance to precision measurement. The
table is protected with rust-preventive oil during storage. Prior to measurement wipe out
the oil using an industrial paper towel or lint-free cloth.

10.1.2 Maintenance after measurement

(1) Apply rust-preventive oil to the alignment table.

Wipe off dust and dirt on the alignment table and apply rust-preventive oil to it.

(2) Perform drainage from the air filter unit.

Stop air supply to the air filter unit and drain water from the unit. (For more information,
refer to section 10.1.1 ” Inspection before measurement”.)

(3) Clean the detector stylus.

If the stylus tip of the detector is stained, the measuring accuracy may be deteriorated.
Always maintain the stylus clean.

• Do not use organic solvents such as benzene and thinner. Using either to wipe the main
unit may discolor the surface or peel off the coating. To clean the main unit, use a
CAUTION neutral detergent or a dry cloth.

10. MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION

10.2 Replacing Consumables

The consumables including the elements in the air filter unit and the fuse are required to
be replaced by the customers. Perform replacement safely, observing the procedure
described below.

10.2.1 Replacing the elements in the air filter unit

The elements of the air filter and filter regulator must be replaced periodically. Replace the
two elements at the same time according to either of the following conditions as a guide.

• When the accumulated operation time exceeds 1500 hours.

• When the air pressure indicated on the gage reduces more than 0.098MPa from the
initial pressure by fully opening the reducing valve.

• Perform any work here after the air supply has been halted.
• After the work is complete, supply the air and make sure that there is no air leakage in
CAUTION the system.

(1) Replacing the air filter element

To replace the air filter element, first remove the bowl by turning it counterclockwise.
Next, remove the element by turning it counterclockwise.
To assemble the air filter, reverse the above removing procedure. At this time confirm
that the O-ring is mounted on the bowl.

11.1 Evaluation Methods of Individual Analysis Parameter

11.1.1 Roundness Evaluation Methods
11.1.1.1 LSC: Least Squares Center method
Roundness is determined from the difference between the radii
of the circumscribed circle and inscribed circle, both of which
are concentric to the reference circle obtained by the least
squares method.

11.1.1.2 MZC: Minimum Zone Center method

Roundness is determined from the minimum difference
between the radii of the concentric circumscribed and inscribed
circles. The reference circle in the minimum zone center
method is the mid-circle equidistant and concentric to these
two circles.

11.1.1.3 MIC: Maximum Inscribed Circle Center method

Roundness is determined from the difference between the
radii of the maximum inscribed circle and the concentric
circumscribed circle.
The reference circle in this method is the maximum inscribed
circle.

No. 99MBB203A 11-1

11.1.1.4 MCC: Minimum Circumscribed Circle Center method
Roundness is determined from the difference between the
radii of the minimum circumscribed circle and the concentric
inscribed circle.
The reference circle in this method is the minimum
circumscribed circle.

TIP ▪ Our measuring instrument and user’s manual are conforming to four evaluation
methods: LSC, MZC, MIC and MCC.

11.1.2 Flatness Evaluation Methods

11.1.2.1 LS: Least Squares method
Flatness
Flatness is determined from the distance between the
two planes, which include the measured profiles
between them. They must be parallel to the reference
plane obtained by the least squares method.

11.1.2.2 MZ: Minimum Zone method

Flatness
Flatness is determined from the minimum distance
between the two planes, which include the measured
profiles between them.
The reference plane in the minimum zone method is
the mid-plane equidistant and parallel to the two planes.

11.2 Filters
11.2.1 About cutoff values
A work piece cross-section contour detected by the detector on a roundness measuring
instrument includes long-cycle waviness components such as elliptic and parabolic
waveforms, and short-cycle surface roughness components. Depending on the use and
property of a work piece it may be preferable to analyze the data by extracting only
waviness components while removing short-cycle roughness components for roundness
judgment or evaluation. As the unit of extracting extent (cutoff value) the number of
undulations per revolution (upr) is used. (e.g. 15 upr)
