QUARTERLY REPORT ......................................................................................................... 19
Introduction
This is 2nd quarter report which began from July 03, 2013 to Sept. 24, 2013 in which I have
fortunately begun it with a fresh project that was at its very initial stage, meaning on a mobilization
stage. The ongoing project is of construction of one storey building for Prevention of Corruption
Combating Bureau (PCCB) Musoma municipality Mara region office on Plot No. 8 & 9 Block A
nearest lake victoria (~0.5 km from TANROAD Musoma) with building permit No.
MMC/UPC/BF/2013/1139/1-6. The entitled contractor is KS Builders Ltd. registered by CRB in
class III and having its headquarters at Dar es Salaam.
PCCB Musoma Municipality Mara region office building comprises of one storey that is 21x14 m2
coverage in a Plot area of 60x30 m2 and comprising of other facilities such as guard house,
generator house, septic tank, soak-away pit, paved parking and water tank tower on the same
plot. The project is estimated to take a period of one 9 months from commencement to
commissioning.
As a remind during the first quarter we were able to work out the project from mobilization to
erection of ground floor columns for main building and part of permanent fence foundation was
also constructed.

QUARTERLY REPORT
STATE OF THE PROJECT AT THE END OF 2ND QUARTER
19
As I have introduced earlier, the project commenced on 10/04/2013 and up to the end of second
quarter .i.e. 24/09/2013 the following major activities have been done:a.
b.
c.
d.
e.
f.
g.
h.
i.
j.
Throughout the process of formwork construction the following issues were given attention as
they seem to be essential and basic.
i.
ii.
iii.
20
Strength: Forms and shutters were constructed to support dead weight, live load and
hydrostatic pressure caused by the fluid action of fresh concrete. The pressure of the freshly
cast concrete increase proportionately with depth of the concrete hence firm bracing of the
formwork.
Speedy erection and easy dismantling: To accelerate the speed of construction formworks
were constructed such that they should be simple and easily erected and dismantled without
causing damage to the concrete.
Joint tightness: To avoid cement leakage and fine aggregate from the concrete we
constructed formwork that are tight enough to provide liquid retaining properties of the
formwork.
iv.
v.
After erection of ground floor columns, wood formwork for first floor slabs and beams followed.
Slabs and beams formwork were supported on the ground floor except for the parapet walls
(canopy) which were supported on 150x50mm sole plate based on blocks continuous under few
props as the figure bellow illustrate
21
In a typical reinforced concrete building frame, the slabs are the primary load carrying
element. They transfer their load to secondary elements such as walls or beams.
In constructing floor formwork after column erections the formwork for beams were
constructed and fixed in space as follows
Beam soffits: These are the pieces cut from marine plywood in corresponding to beam width
(b = 230mm) and fixed on the columns faces as per beam span and supported by props.
Beam soffits level were checked and corrected to correspond horizontal level. Erection of
props were done first and firmly supported.
Erection of props: Props were basically of timber poles spaced at 50mm c/c and supported
on the ground floor with double wedges system that ensure no lateral movement that occur
during concrete casting. Props were perfectly plumbed at the time of pouring the concrete.
Props were nailed with struts support plywood beam soffits
22
concrete ground floor. Side of major penetrations were covered to surpass leakage
during concrete casting.
c. Fixing the sheeting: The position of joists was determined by the sheet length, in this
case the length of plywood which is 240cm by 120cm, and the c/c spacing of the
intermediate joists. Sheeting were done by nailing plywood on joists as close as
possible to minimize leakage.
24
3. STAIRCASE FORMWORKING.
The formula that we used to erect and fix staircase formwork was similar to that of slab
except for the case of sloping soffit of the staircase slab and raisers that make the difference.
Steps raised by 150mm and horizontally 300mm. The first run i.e. the stairs from the ground
floor are supported from ground to mid of the floor (landing) height by beam and from to the
first floor as you can see on the figure below.
Staircase formwork
N.B. After construction of first floor formwork service system i.e. electrical, data and telephone
trunks were placed on the sheeting as per service engineer drawings together with plumbing
pipes
The following were done after construction of formwork and fixing service system
25
1. REINFORCEMENT TEST
As a matter of principle every materials in construction should be tested to comply with
standard specified in building specification, so before we undertook reinforcement fixing for
the first floor we brought supplied reinforcement bars to laboratory for testing. Due to the fact
that most of materials that we are using here at site are ordered from Dar es Salaam we also
did testing at University of Dar es salaam build materials laboratory and submit certified copy
of test results to project manager and structural engineer for approval.
2. BEAMS REINFORCEMENT
Beams reinforcement bars were prepared as per structural detailing drawings by our steel
fixer and placed appropriately to each beam with my supervision. According to reinforcement
detail from structural engineer, beams were arranged such that beams contain four bars of
16 and tied together by link bars of 8 spaced at 175mm c/c. as showing on the attached
drawings of beams at back of this report. Both tension and compression bars were spaced by
25mm for cover while placing and fixing.
3. SLAB REINFORCEMENT
Slab deck was reinforced by 12 spaced at 200mm c/c and with cover of 20mm both bottom
and top bars. Slab reinforcement contains bottom 1 & 2 and top 1 & 2 these bars were fixed
and spaced by spacer bars magoli.
26
After arrangement and f ixing of reinforcement we invite engineer for inspection and
approval.
C. BATCHING, MIXING, PLACING AND COMPACTION OF CONCRETE
i.
Concrete mixing on site is prepared by using potable water from the Musoma municipal water
supply, free-dust-aggregate and fine grain sand as per specifications.
Batching is done by weight and minimum of one bag per batch while maximum of 10 cement bags
per batch is being used.
The already casted concrete grades are C25, C20, C15 and C7
There are two concrete mixing machines in which there is transit Mixer for large volume cast and
the mixing Drum for moderate concrete volume cast.
Consulting Engineer ordered for the test of both cement, sand, aggregate and water that we are
using for concrete mixing, so for every concrete casting we were preparing a concrete cubes
ready for 7days and 28 days as per specification.
ii.
Concrete casting/placing is being done by using 10lts buckets by casual labors and porker
vibrator is used to compact the placed concrete within the contained formwork.
27
