On completion of this module, students should be able to: Appreciate the fundamentals of antenna theory and the propagation factors that govern the design and operation of modern wireless communication systems; Analyse the radiation patterns from different types of antenna including microstrip and patch; analyse antenna arrays Understand various modes of propagation and how these are affected by climate; develop link budgets; Understand how diversity, adaptive beamforming, etc., can enhance the performance of a communication system

Detailed Session Plan ANTENNA FUNDAMENTALS & RADIATION FIELDS OF ANTENNAS Isotropic Radiation, Power density and Intensity, Gain, Directive gain, Directivity, Effective area, Reciprocity theorem, Antenna efficiency, Radiation resistance, Terminal impedance, Beam width and Bandwidth. Concept of vector potential, Modification of time varying and retarded case, Fields associated with hertzian dipole, Power radiated and radiation resistance of current element, Radiation from half wave dipole.
