With a little help from the camp
professionals at the American Camp
Association, heres some sound advice
that helps parents sort through the choices
and benets that camp delivers. As spring
approaches, parents and children can look
forward to planning for the future a
future that includes the opportunities for
exploration and discovery that arrives
with summer camp.
How to Decide When Your
Child is Ready for Camp
Children are ready for new experiences
at different stages. Parents know their
children best and these questions can help
gauge whether this is the summer your
child will start camp.
What is your childs age?
Children under age seven may not adjust
easily to being away from home. Consider
the day camp experience to prepare them
for future overnight camp.
How did your child become
interested in camp?
Does your child talk about camp on a
sustained basis? How much persuasion is
necessary?
Has your child had positive
overnight experiences away
from home?
Visiting relatives or friends? Were these
separations easy or difcult?
What does your child expect
to do at camp?
Learning about the camp experience
ahead of time allows you to create
positive expectations.
Are you able to share
consistent and positive
messages about camp?
Your condence in a positive experience
will be contagious.
A Camp for Every Child
The Perfect Fit
Camp can last for just a few days or
stretch to all summer long. Its well worth
the trouble to investigate the variety of
choices offered by camps before your
child packs a backpack. These questions
help you consider the options.
Near or Far?
Where do you want your child to go to
camp? Locally or far away? While each
camp experience has something unique
to offer your child, this is an opportunity
for families to assess what they value for
their campers.

Summer may seem like its miles away, but its not
too early to begin making plans for summer fun for
the kids. Exploring the offerings at local rec centers
is a great place to start.
Lititz recCenter will again offer a large variety of
preschool and youth summer camps for kids ages
3 to 12 years old. Program director Amy Howett
said that there will be weekly sports camps, activity
camps, preschool themed camps, art camps and
specialty camps.
Last year we offered two new specialty camps
that turned out to be very popularthe American
Girl camp and a Just for Boys camp. Since they
really went over well, well offer them again this
year, she said.
The American Girl camp focuses on a different
historical American Girl doll each day as well as
the modern day American Girls. Crafts, games and
swimming are included in the activities, and the
week ends with a tea party.
The Just for Boys camp includes all boy activities
such as Nerf Zone, Flag Football, dodgeball and
making boats to foat at the Lititz Springs Park. The
week includes a day at Camp Shand in Cornwall
with hiking, canoeing and archery.
The preschool camp for 3-5 year olds has summer
themes such as Ocean Week, Camping Fun Week
and Summer Science & Nature. Art camps will be
offered for children ages 6-8 and 9-12. Creativity
and talent will be explored through working with
a variety of art mediums and exploring new
techniques in a fun and stimulating environment.
Howett indicated that all Camps and programs
are open to everyone, not just members or Lititz
residents. lititzrec.com.
Ephrata recCenter offers 11-weeks of summer
fun for kids ages 6 to 11. Jean Wentz, marketing/
membership coordinator, said that Summer Kidz
Kamp features swimming, crafts, feld trips, special
events, games and much more with professional
staff in a structured setting. Its held Monday through
Friday from mid-June through mid-August, and
parents may opt for daily or weekly registration.
Ephrata recCenter also hosts a summer recreation
program thats sponsored by Ephrata and Akron
boroughs and Clay Township and is free to residents
of those municipalities. Wentz said that Ephrata
Township does partly fund the program, so its
residents can participate at half of the non-
resident rate. Programs include swimming
lessons, week-long
nature
programs,
sports
clinics,
and
specialty
camps
such as
craft and
art camps.

States Tennis Association (USTA) National Junior
Tennis & Learning (NJTL) program; locations include

First time at camp
S
ending your child away to
camp for the frst time is a
major milestone for most
families, one that is often
marked by excitement,
anticipation, and perhaps
even some anxiety. Though camp is
certainly about making friends and
having fun, it is also about being on your
own and being a part of a community.
One of the most important things you
as a parent can do to help prepare your
child is to talk with your child about it
before he/she goes.
In fact, it may be better to have
several occasional, shorter talks rather
than one long conversation as children
often absorb more when there is less
to think about at one time. I also fnd
that children do better with this sort
of conversation if it is part of a more
general conversation and if it is part of
a pattern of talking, either at the dinner
table or while riding in the car doing
errands.
The following are some sample topics
for discussion that will help prepare your
child for their big adventure:
FRIENDS
Camp is not anything if it is not about
making new friends. If you are shy
about meeting new kids, then learn to
get to know others by being a good
listener. Remember that not everyone
in your cabin, bunk, or group has to be
your friend, and you dont have to be
everyone elses friend. As long as you
treat others with respect and they do the
same with you, then having one or two
friends at camp is fne. If you have more,
then thats great!
ACTIVITIES
There are many exciting things to do at
camp, many of which you may never
have tried before. If your child tends to
be a bit homesick or worried about being
homesick, remind him/her about the
excitement of going to camp. Remember
when you frst decided to go to camp,
what made you so excited? You may
not like all the activities, or you may
be better at some than others. Thats
normal. I, however, hope you are willing
to try. The more you put into camp, the
more you will get out of it!
COOPERATING
You, like every other camper there, will
be part of a cabin, bunk, or group. As
your parent, I hope you will cooperate
with others and help out. Thats part of
what makes camp so special kids
helping each other out. Most kids will
help you if you are friendly and help
them.
GIVE YOURSELF TIME
One thing about camp is that almost
everything is new the kids, the
activities, the routines, the bed you sleep
in, the bathroom. It takes a few days to
get adjusted, so be patient with yourself.
Most of the time you will be having
so much fun you wont mind all the
changes, but if you do, remember that
you will get so used to things that by the
time you come home you will miss all
those things!
HELPING OUT
Camp is about fun, but it also requires
that you help out. Clean-up is part of
camp. You do it every day.
GETTING HELP
Everyone has good days and bad days.
If you are having a problem, your
counselor is there to help you! You
dont have to wait to tell us if you are
upset about something. After all, if your
counselor doesnt know what might be
troubling you, he/she cant help you.
Be honest and ask for what you need.
If your counselor doesnt seem to be
concerned or doesnt help you, then
you can go to the unit director, head
counselor, etc.
BEING POSITIVE
Its a great thing to remind your frst-
time camper about his or her strong
points. I would focus not just on what
they do well, but their positive qualities
as well, such as what makes them a good
friend or the type of person other kids
would want to know. Helping children
identify their strengths can help them
when they are having a setback one
of those inevitable growing pains all
children have from time to time.
Talking with your child about these
kinds of issues is a great way to show
support as your child gets ready to take
this important step on the road to being
more resilient and self-reliant. For you
as a parent, it can give you more peace
of mind as you allow your child to
participate safely in a broader world.

development, please visit the American
Camp Associations family-dedicated

Dutch Wonderland will have a new
attraction, Exploration Island, that will star 15
animatronic dinosaurs and their families.
Michele Wischmeyer, vice president of
marketing for Dutch Wonderlands owner,
Palace Entertainment, said Exploration Island
brings a new element to the park.
We have the rides, the water attractions
and the walk-around characters, she said
Wednesday.
Now we can give children the opportunity
to experience what its like to walk with
dinosaurs.
Exploration Island at the rear of the
Lincoln Highway East park will feature four
areas.
There will be Dino Dig, where youngsters
can dig for dinosaur fossils, including
triceratops and stegosaurus skeletons and
tyrannosaurus rex footprints.
Prehistoric Path will allow visitors to walk
along lush trails to discover animatronic
dinosaurs who come to life as you approach.
On the Gondola Cruise, visitors will
be able to take a picturesque canal cruise
around the inner rim of Exploration Island.
Then theres The Turnpike, one of the
parks original rides. It will be relocated to
Exploration Island and doubled in length.
Hurley called Exploration Island the most
signifcant addition to Dutch Wonderland
since the 2003 debut of Dukes Lagoon, a
large water-play area.
This is going to appeal to a wide base of
guests. Families as a whole will really enjoy it,
at their own pace, she said.
Wischmeyer described the 15 dinosaurs as
realistic in appearance and action. Their tails
will sway, eyes blink, chests infate and wings
fap, she said.
Exploration Island will sprinkle education
into the fun, by providing story board and
fact panels to tell the habits, history and
family lives of the ancient creatures.
Exploration Island is scheduled to be
complete when Dutch Wonderland opens for
the 2014 season on Saturday, April 26. The
park will be open weekends until Saturday,
May 24, when it will be open daily through
summer.
Walk with dinosaurs
Dutch Wonderland will offer a walk on the wild side.

If your kids eat only chicken tenders, hamburgers
and macaroni and cheese, it may be time to take
them on a culinary adventure.
Perhaps they would enjoy a trip to India, where
they can try pockets flled with tasty vegetables
known as samosas. How about a journey to South
America for arroz con pollo, or rice with chicken?
In Thailand or Cambodia, they might just take a
liking to Pad Thai, the comfort food dish of noodles,
chicken and vegetables. In Japan, some colorful
sushi, especially the vegetable and cooked seafood
varieties, might offer something fun for children.
Of course, it might be a bit costly to travel the
world for a culinary adventure. Fortunately, there
are many local restaurants that can give your
children a taste of the world. The key is to start
with milder dishes that they are likely to enjoy, then
expand their horizons into other dishes.
At Taj Mahal, 2080 Bennett Avenue just off
Rohrerstown Road, the family will fnd Indian food
like Tikka Masala, Biryani, Samosas, Tandoori and
Naan. Many of the dishes are vegetarian and made
with fresh produce, spices and herbs, instead of
heavy fats and oils. Its a great way to introduce
your children to the exotic favors of curry, ginger,
cardamom, garlic, turmeric and other spices.
One of the best ways to explore the many favors
of Indian food is to go to the Monday evening buffet
at Taj Mahal, where the family can try a variety of
dishes, from rice dishes to breads to chicken, lamb
and vegetarian dishes, and even dessert.
Have your kids try the Tiki Masala, which is a
northern Indian dish made with charbroiled chicken,
meat or vegetables in a tangy sauce of tomatoes,
herbs and spices that is really Indian barbecue.
Most dishes are served with aromatic basmati rice.
For dessert, try Gulab Jamun sweet cheese balls
with honey is a bit like cheesecake, or Kheer, the
Indian version of rice pudding with nuts and raisins.

Next stop is Thailand and Laos, where your family
can savor authentic Thai food at SukhoThai, located
at the Champion Forge Center at 398 Harrisburg
Avenue. The food is fresh and favorful, with choices
that include soups, salads, noodles, seafood, rice
and curry dishes. For youngsters, you can request
toned-down versions of the spicier dishes.
Thai food is healthy too, packed with fresh
vegetables and delicate rice and noodles. There is
nothing heavy about dishes brimming with fresh
broccoli, carrots, apples, asparagus, peppers,
zucchini, peas, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, baby
corn, ginger, cilantro, mango, peanuts, cashews
and more. Steamed shrimp, chicken, beef, fsh
give dishes added protein, while there are many
vegetarian options.

about a trip to Italy? You do have to head to the

Lancaster County. At Fiorentinos Italian Restaurant
at Lancaster Airport, kids get to watch the airplanes

There are paninis, veal, chicken, beef and pasta
dishes, salads, gourmet pizzas and much more,
all based on the traditional cooking of the owners
Southern Italian family from the Calabria region
of Italy. Many of the recipes come from her mother
and grandmother, including the light, full-favored
marinara that relies on fresh tomato and basil. Kids
are sure to like Nonnas meatballs that show up in
spaghetti and meatballs, meatball subs, meatball

range from classic Margherita with fresh tomato,
mozzarella and basil to pizza with all the favorite
toppings. forentinos.com.
Think your kids would never try sushi? You might
be surprised. At Blue Orchid at Richmond Square,
just off Fruitville Pike, the concept is Asian fusion,
which blends Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese,
Thai and other Asian cuisine with Mediterranean
infuences.
Watch for the little red chilies on the menu
that mark the spicy dishes, which are usually not
popular with kids. Spices can be toned down on
request. Other dishes with more kid-appeal include
satay, stir-fry rice, General Tsos chicken, honey
walnut chicken, Pad Thai noodles, Beef Teriyaki and
more.
Blue Orchid has an extensive sushi menu with
sliced nigiri, rolled maki, fsh sashimi and cone
shaped temaki. Most children will prefer cooked or
veggie sushi, such as the California maki with crab,
avocado and cucumber. blueorchidsushi.com.
Next stop for your culinary adventure is
Colombia, South America. On South State Street
in Ephrata, visit Aromas Del Sur for authentic
Spanish-inspired food. Aromas Del Sur
means Aromas of the South in
Spanish, and your kids will think they
were in South America, with beautiful
murals hand painted on the walls.
One of the most intriguing dishes
is a traditional comfort food known
as Bandeja Paisa. It is a one-dish meal
of rice, beans, sweet plantains, beef steak,
pork strip, cornbread and a fried egg. It is a hearty
dish prepared by the wives for the working men
after their hard day, with a little bit of everything
in the pot. There are also little meat pies known as
Empanadas, which are flled with shredded beef
or chicken, vegetables, potatoes and seasonings.
Arroz con Pollo, or rice with chicken, is another
classic dish, as well as Tamales which are made
with corn dough stuffed with pork,
chicken and vegetables
wrapped in a plantain leaf.
