Havlng [ust been made redundant

thelr laurels though, a brewery was
bullt at the rear of the pub, the
range of ales/clders was lncreased,
cheese/open mlc/comedy & poker
nlghts were all lntroduced along
wlth regular 8eer Pestlvals. All thls
and much more has seen lts stature
rlse among Peal Ale enthuslasts who
beers are on each week at more
than reasonable prlces. So lt ls
followed up lts runner-up award last
year wlth the top award thls and lt
wlll now go forward lnto the

Punner-up ln the Clty was the Llttle

has added somethlng new to the

the pub has been bullt up over a

AMPA's whatPub webslte
has revolutlonlzed the way
we revlew pubs, but before the
advent of on-llne technology
local beer/pub guldes ln hard
copy format were essentlal. |n
l983 and l990 thls county's
and nelghbourlng CAMPA
branches collaborated to
produce Derbyshire AIe,
expertly edlted by Derby's Peg
Newcombe. The l990 edltlon
llsted 800 pubs servlng l00
today, can be nearly doubled
for Derby alone. The clty has,
however, lost a quarter of the
72 pubs featured back ln l990.
The most strlklng statlstlc
though lles ln the gulde's
brewery sectlon, where two
thlrds of 46 malnly reglonal and
natlonal brewerles have closed.
The sole Derbyshlre survlvor ls
the 1ohn Thompson at |ngleby,
but thanks to the mlcro-
brewery exploslon there are
now some 43 brewerles ln
Lngland's mldmost county.
those lost pubs and ln DD l55
fortunes of a number of our
pubs ln outlylng locatlons.
DDl56 wlll see the three part
serles conclude on a posltlve
note by revlewlng some
Derbyshire AIe clty pubs that
fell on hard tlmes and then
revlved ln startllng style.
Pub bulldlng was at lts zenlth
when Derby's suburb of New
Normanton rose ln the late
vlctorlan era. |t was a great area
ln whlch to drlnk real ale,
however, populatlon change
and the relocatlon of Derby
County away from the 8aseball
Ground have declmated the
pub scene. Pams' fans would
congregate on match days ln
taverns such as the Sun Inn
(Hardy and Hanson), Mlddleton
Street, and the Vine (8ass),
whlttaker Street, whlch was the
brewery. The multl roomed
lnterlor of the Mafeking (8ass)
on Porter Poad, made lt one of
our more characterful lnns.
Three generatlons of the Morrls
famlly ran the "Maf" ln the
second half of the 20thC, and lt
was here that a young Nlgel
8arker "cut hls teeth" ln the
llcensed trade. Nlgel would
later revlve the crescent shaped
8asebaII HoteI named after the
football ground opposlte whlch
orlglnally hosted the Amerlcan
sport. Lnterprlslng Nlgel kept a
good cellar, and the long,
curved publlc bar, wlth parquet
[oy to behold. The 8ass pub on
Shaftesbury Crescent was
demollshed prematurely ln
l995 when lt was mooted that
the 8aseball Ground would be
re-bullt. However, Prlde Park
was destlned to be the Pams'
new home and lt's regrettable
that these and many more New
Normanton pubs exlst ln
memory only.
Llsewhere ln the clty, Davld
8ruce of London, the man
behlnd a chaln of "Plrkln" home
brew pubs, revlved Derby's rlch
brewlng herltage ln l988 when
he opened the IIamingo and
Iirkin on 8ecket Street whlch,
on occaslon, brewed some hlgh
quallty beer. The cavernous pub
and on-slte brewery ceased
tradlng ln the 90s followlng a
takeover of the Plrkln chaln. The
redoubtable Robert PeeI near
the rallway statlon was stlll
open when the gulde was
publlshed, havlng hltherto
balked at Allled 8rewerles'
relentless transltlon to keg beer
ln the early l970s. 8oaters 8ar

cosy hostelry has, together wlth

to hlstory. Darley Thorne 8est

7he Victoria
another casualty and, glven the
number of chlmney pots ln the
8ass house could have been a
vlable concern. One of the more
unusual late 20thC pub
openlngs was the Thomas A
8ecket, on Green Lane, an
lmaglnatlve converslon of a
8aptlst chapel. The then Derby
County manager, Colln
Addlson, opened the new pub
ln l979 as watney's Plned Ale
debuted ln the clty. 8y the tlme
of Derbyshire AIe's publlcatlon,
ownershlp had transferred to
Devenlsh and
newly named as
the Steam
Cafe/OId AIe
House, but bar
and brewery
were destlned
for obllvlon. The
Putherford famlly who superbly
restored the Queen's Head,
Marlpool, and General
Havelock, |lkeston, were
rumoured to be lnterested ln
turnlng the place lnto a brew-
pub. Thls appears not to have
galned tractlon however, and a
once vlbrant venue stands
forlorn and unloved [ust llke the
nearby Hlppodrome.

Good Beer Guide
2014 - Out Now
The 20l4 edltlon of CAMPA's popular Good 8eer Gulde ls now
out and ls fully revlsed and updated and features pubs across
the Unlted Klngdom that serve the best real ale. Now ln lts
4lst edltlon, thls pub gulde ls completely lndependent wlth
llstlngs based entlrely on nomlnatlon and evaluatlon by
CAMPA members. Thls means you can be sure that every one
of the 4,500 pubs deserves thelr place, plus they all come
recommended by people who know
a thlng or two about good beer. The
unlque '8rewerles Sectlon' llsts over
l000 brewerles - mlcro, reglonal
and natlonal - that produce real ale
ln the UK, and the beers that they
brew. Tastlng notes for the beers,
complled by CAMPA-tralned
tastlng teams, are also lncluded.
The Good 8eer Gulde 20l4 ls
the complete book for beer
lovers and a must-have for
anyone wantlng to experlence
avallable onllne from
CAMPA.org.uk or local book
shops and some pubs
around the area lncludlng
the Alexandra Hotel &
Purnace |nn ln Derby.
I
f you ever traveI to the
wonderfuIIy Scenic town of
8udapest, I recommend
seeking out the ruined
garden pubs. 7he biggest and
most iconic of these is
SzimpIa kert in the town
centre. 8ased on a simpIe idea
of converting a ruined city
site such as a an oId garage,
car park, or a demoIished
apartment bIock into a pub
with a Iarge centraI outdoor
area. It seems to work a treat.
Otkert and koIoves kert are
other fascinating versions of
ruined Carden pubs. SzimpIa
is the biggest of these on two
stories with nooks and
crannies gaIore and a vast
outdoor seating area,
incIuding a coupIe of
decapitated oId 7rabant cars
to drink in.
|t has extended the rulned
[unk furnlture, [unk sculptures
and plctures. They brew thelr
own beer as well as servlng
lagers and splrlts and supply
shlsha plpes for trendy locals
and tourlsts. |t has a surreal,
happy amblance and ls a
fasclnatlng experlence. An old
bath becomes a sofa and a
battery of old Tv's llght up a
dark corner wlth kaleldoscoplc
patterns and a [unk robot slts
by an old telephone box. There
are numerous bars to serve the
crowds that seem to come
every nlght. To vlslt the place ls
to become entranced.
|t seems a wonderful slmple
ldea, recycllng an untldy plece
of waste land, lnto an eccentrlc,
spaclous bar that appeals to a
dlverslty of people. Perhaps
Tlm Martln should thlnk about
thls concept, turnlng away
from convertlng banks, shops
and clnemas to creatlng the
wetherspoons. |t would cost a
lot less than the normal
wetherspoon converslon.
However the comblned welght
of bulldlng regulatlons and
health and safety pollcles may
well defeat hlm ln thls country.

1.5 units and, shock horror, a

7he maximum safe drinking
Iimits are supposed to be 4
units per day for a man and 3

doesn't matter which you take

that most reaI cider is in the 6-

stiII have |ust the same Iimit
when you restart!
Now fast forward a few years.
The antl-alcohol lobby have
become even more powerful
and voclferous than they are
today. (They also seem to have
as much access to the medla as
they want). |t's obvlous that a
large sectlon of the populatlon
[ust "haven't got the message"
about safe drlnklng. The cry
goes up that "they", l.e. the
government, must "do
somethlng about lt". The
government are convlnced. The
conslder a masslve prlce
lncrease, but that would hlt the
poorest very hard and do
nothlng to curb the drlnklng
hablts of bankers and the llke,
so the "falrest" way to tackle the
"problem" ls by a ratlonlng
system. Lveryone over l8 can
apply for alcohol unlt vouchers
(4 per day for a man, 3 per day
for a woman) and the
approprlate number of
vouchers must be handed over
whenever alcohol ls purchased
ln a pub, restaurant,
supermarket or anywhere else
for that matter.
Of course, problems
lmmedlately appear. The
government have been advlsed
that the allowance for over 65's
should be half the standard
rate, so men and women
pensloners get 2 and l.5
vouchers respectlvely per day,
leadlng to a pensloners revolt.
Pregnant women get none at
all. There are also some
unexpected consequences.
8ecause l voucher gets you a
half of 3.7% beer, for beers of
more than 3.7% fractlons of a
voucher are requlred. Thls
results ln most brewers
reduclng the A.8.vs of all beers
to 3.7%. |t's even worse for
clder makers, you can't senslbly
sell real clder at 3.7%, and a
7.4% standard means 2
vouchers, many [ust glve up.
Porelgn tourlsts are totally
bemused, and tourlst lndustry
collapses. Naturally, a black
market for both vouchers and
alcohol sprlngs up overnlght,
run by crlmlnal gangs. A blg
selllng polnt for the voucher
scheme was that lt ought to
l8's to obtaln alcohol. Thls
doesn't happen, ln Llncolnshlre
the llllclt vodka factorles go
lnto overdrlve, targetlng the
teenage market and resultlng
ln a number of teenagers golng
bllnd.
Thls system doesn't deal
adequately wlth home brewlng
and drlnklng at home. The
government are urged to set
up an antl-alcohol pollce force
wlth the power to enter prlvate
homes and to enforce the safe
drlnklng llmlts there, but even
ln thls nlghtmare scenarlo the
government sees thls as a step
too far. Nevertheless vlgllante
antl-alcohol patrols are allowed
to operate wlth lmpunlty,
pourlng away alcohol wherever
anyone who gets ln thelr way.
Now | have no tlme for anyone
who drlnks so much that they
cause a nulsance to others or
gets lnvolved wlth the pollce
(and by the way, we already
have perfectly adequate laws
for deallng wlth antl-soclal and
crlmlnal behavlour resultlng
from excesslve drlnklng). Dltto
anyone who requlres medlcal
attentlon (here | would go
further than the current
posltlon and allow A&L
departments to charge those
whose admlsslon ls solely the
result of drlnk). However, the
vast ma[orlty of those of us
who llke a drlnk bother nelther
the pollce nor A&L, we should
be left alone to declde for
ourselves what constltutes for
us a reasonable level of
drlnklng.

Pub News
Good news for a change, the Three Horseshoes on
Derby Poad, |lkeston once a Greene Klng outlet ls
now a free house wlth l tradltlonal clder on hand
pump and 5 changlng quest beers lncludlng a
regular house beer from Castle Pock. The new
tenants are Scott & Llsa Pyder, Scott ls the llcensee
who ln the past worked for Hardy & Hansons and
Greene Klng and ls now head of sales for Castle
Pock brewery. Llsa's parents, Colln and |rls Duro
once ran the Mlners Arms on the opposlte corner
whlch ls now a prlvate house. The front bar has
had a modern face llft and ls welcomlng and the
rear bar/snug ls more or less the same as lt was
worth a vlslt lf ln |lkeston belng very close to
other real ale bars. Openlng hours are l2-l2
everyday, food avallable wlll be cobs and pork
ples.
The boarded up Poyal Oak on Tamworth Poad,
Long Laton ls rumoured for demolltlon wlth a
retlrement home to be bullt ln lts place. Thls ls
well bullt bulldlng, once a 8ass house whlch has
gone through many changes but has now sadly
come to lts end.
The 8arge on Tamworth Poad, Long Laton no
longer does Camra dlscount.
The Pose & Crown, Draycott has been partly
demollshed but by the tlme you read thls lt wlll
members who stated that the only way he found
anythlng out about the plannlng appllcatlon was
by golng on the councll webslte.
The Stumble |nn, Long Laton recently brewed lts
Song 8lrd and apparently lt was very nlce.
7rips and SociaIs
Our Chrlstmas trlp 20l3 was to Stockport and lt
was well attended, startlng at the popular well
photographed Crown |nn beneath the vladuct
where we were met ln the pub by Dave from the
Stockport 8ranch who was our gulde for most of
the day. A short walk along the A6 took us to the
Magnet and then to the very good Hope |nn
whlch also brews the very excellent Poolhardy
the malnly very busy Poblnsons and Sam Smlth
Stockport ls a very lnterestlng town and well
worth another vlslt.
Our next soclal outlng on Saturday 8th Peb was
round the Cannlng Clrcus area of Nottlngham
whlch turned out to be our largest gatherlng ever,
36 camra members and frlends met ln the Organ
Grlnder. when we left to go to the Portland Arms
the pub was nearly empty, the other 2 pubs
vlslted were the Palcon and Hand & Heart.
Unfortunately the Slr 1ohn 8orlase warren was
closed for refurblshment but thls Lverards pub
wlll open ln partnershlp wlth 8rown Ales very
soon. An excellent selectlon of beers ln all the
the Plough Nottlngham.
A trlp
planned for
later ln the
year ls round
west Hallam
the Nutbrook
8rewery for a

DorTcgr,,,
Considerl Dear 7oper, a recent Friday evening, wbereon,
accompanied by a friend, I ventured into a certain city centre
bosteIry. 7be pIace was uncbaracteristicaIIy crowded, due to
predominantIy maIe (presumabIy tbey bad Ieft tbeir otber
baIves at bome watcbing some vapid teIevised dross, sucb as,
"ritain's got 7aIentIess Idiots") tbe raucous, fouImoutbed
7.V. in ever decreasing circIes of inteIIectuaI input and ever
increasing circIes of voIume.
Viewing our boorisb and
unwanted company, as tbey
jostIed at tbe counter,
making iII-mannered
demands of tbe over-
companion was stung to
comment, "Cbristl It's Iike
being in a men onIy barl"
wbicb was someway from
tbe trutb.
|, unllke my young
companlon, do actually
remember men only bars ln
pubs, and on the whole found
them to be peaceful and
respectable places, usually
overseen by a solltary
barmald, who ruled her
domaln wlth an unspoken
and understated alr of
authorlty. These qulet oases of
clvlllsatlon, were, ln my vlew,
needlessly swept away ln the l970's by the craven polltlcal stooges
of the mllltant femlnlst harrldans. The shrlll cheerleaders of the
latter were at that tlme seldom away from the alrwaves, and
accordlng to an old acqualntance of mlne, "lnvlted envlronmental
dlsaster by thelr lnsane lnslstence on the mass burnlng of bras!" He
stlll malntalns to thls day, that all of that elastlc and nylon golng up
ln smoke ls what caused the hole ln the ozone layer.
ou may chuckle, Dear Toper, but lt ls a lot less fanclful than the
recent well-publlclsed assertlon of someone who clalmed that the
marglnally more credlble
than the theory that they had
been caused by manmade
cllmate change!
Settlng aslde the welrd and
wonderful lntrlgues of green
polltlcs and movlng on to
pleasurable, | for one am
relleved that bras are back ln
fashlon (partlcularly the black
lacy ones) and | am sure that
the ma[orlty of women are
too, especlally the older ones,
for whom defylng gravlty ls
no longer an optlon - lf
lndeed lt ever was!
As for men only bars,
personally | prefer to drlnk ln
mlxed company and as | have
stated before ln thls august
more en[oyable when lt's
accompanled by a pretty
face. Nevertheless, Dear
Toper, there are tlmes, when, havlng found myself ln some nolsy
pub, full of crass, foulmouthed (some of the women are worse than
of yore, when | had the optlon of avoldlng the louts and loutesses
by retreatlng to the relatlve peace and qulet of a men only bar.
Conslder the, Dear Toper!
