Lauren Midwood - PGCE Geography Education

I decided that I was interested in being a teacher from an early age as I had a really inspirational Geography teacher at my secondary school. During my degree I decided to apply for the Students into School Scheme to get some valuable work experience. I found working with young people really rewarding and thought teaching would be a really interesting career as every day would be different. When I finished my degree I knew that I wanted to study a PGCE in Geography and the University of Sunderland was recommended to me by many friends and family as having excellent courses for teacher training. It had good Ofsted reports and it was also where my Geography teacher trained. I found the PGCE gave me a lot of experience within schools and I was able to develop my teaching skills and style as well as my behaviour management techniques. At times the programme can be hard work but the support you get from the staff, both pastoral and academic is second to none, they are a very approachable and friendly team who are always willing to help. I know that when I start my NQT year at Kingsmeadow School in September I will be fully prepared for the challenges ahead thanks to my mentors, tutors and course colleagues. I now find teaching second nature and everything I have learnt I am now putting into practice, and no doubt will use and take with me wherever I teach.

Jonathan Douglass - PGCE Primary Education

I have wanted to be a primary teacher since the age of 9, which I think is all down to having a really enthusiastic teacher at that age. I was very inspired by him. He opened up a lot of doors for me. He taught me to play guitar and I took that further and completed a performance degree. I feel that completing this degree helped me immensely as when teaching you tend to perform and use different characters to work with the children, especially with the younger ages so I would definitely recommend it. When looking to study my PGCE I decided that I wanted to move back up to the North East and therefore got in touch with the University of Sunderland as I knew they offered the programme that I wanted. The advice they gave me was really helpful so I decided to accept their offer to study with them. I have really enjoyed the course; the teaching staff really want you to do well and succeed. The course has a really nice atmosphere, even though it feels like us against the world at times, especially when we are out on placement. This is when we come together and help each other on the course and provide each other with support. It is really important to have that support and to be able to share ideas and resources. On such a short intense course you learn so much, especially out on placements, as it is really hands on. I have enjoyed every placement Ive been on even though at times it has seemed like a hard learning curve, but I now feel all those things I have experienced have really prepared me for my future.

Susan Korhonen - Alis

In 1996 I began to teach music as a classical vocal teacher in Vienna, Austria whilst simultaneously maintaining my singing career as a professional artist. It was during this time I realised how much I enjoyed encouraging and equipping international students. Later, after my two sons were born in Vienna I began to focus on teaching voice in an after school music programme offered at the Vienna International School where I also worked in Primary as an Educational Staff Support member. I developed an interest in pursuing a formal teaching qualification; however, it was challenging to find one that would be suitable in that I had decided to prioritize my family and did not want to leave Austria. It was during this time that several of my colleagues highly recommended the PGCE overseas programme at Sunderland University to me. I was fortunate to be able to combine my year of study with being appointed the Artist in Residence for Voice at the Vienna International School in Secondary Music. I had the unique opportunity to collaborate as an established professional and to immerse myself in the intensive PGCE programme for my teacher training. I found that the PGCE curriculum at Sunderland was relevant for my work with international students in an IB School. I had an excellent mentor at VIS and also benefited from the support, guidance and feedback I received from Sunderland, most especially from their visit to observe my teaching. My studies were quite demanding but equally enriching and solidly prepared me for my next step, Both music teachers left for a maternity leave and I was fortunate to finish my studies and be appointed for one of their positions in secondary music! I am very happy and continuing to enjoy my journey in teaching!

James Dias - PGCE Primary Education

I had thought about going into teaching for quite some time but I always thought that I wanted to teach Secondary Education. I decided to go and get some experience working with children within years three and five which I really enjoyed as they were all so eager to learn and so enthusiastic, I knew from that point that it was Primary Education that I wanted to teach. When looking for a course, I knew that I wanted to be based in the North East as Ive always liked the area, so when Sunderland offered me a place I was thrilled as the city is right on the coast and I had heard lots of good comments regarding the course itself. I have found the course at Sunderland an invaluable experience; the staff are very supportive and strive to get the best out of you to enable you to succeed. The course only has a small number of participants on it which is great as everyone is friends and we all really support each other especially when youre out on placement which is really important as it can be very daunting. The course has really prepared me so much for my future career and Ive taken so much from it. I would say that the course is hard work at times but can guarantee that the outcome is extremely rewarding.

Customised Award Scheme

Customised Award Scheme (CAS) is a flexible way to study at University.
The scheme offers you the opportunity to write your own programme of study customised or tailor-made according to your interests and/or your needs, within clearly defined University regulations. We can offer you a qualification that suits you from a huge variety of subjects and you can gain anything from a University certificate to a Masters degree! You could study full-time or part-time and even transfer between the two. You can join the scheme in either September or January depending upon timetabling of individual subjects. Past examples have been students who combined their interest in Music with their love of Fine Art and Psychology. These combinations were not part of the suite of degrees that the University offered but the unique design of the Customised Awards Scheme meant it was possible to facilitate the development of these personalised degrees. Other possibilities are available too. For instance, you might wish to learn a language for pleasure or you might need to take a

selection of modules for professional development in your workplace or you might wish to explore a selection of subjects to enhance your academic knowledge, e.g. History, Politics and English. If you are unsure as to exactly what you would like to study, the Customised Award Scheme allows you to take one or more modules as 'tasters' to explore your interests and also develop your confidence. In addition to academic and vocational subjects, we can also offer a range of skills modules to help get you back into formal study and develop your research and writing skills. Your specific needs can be addressed by developing a suitable programme. If you are an employer looking to develop training packages for your staff then the Customised Award Scheme academic team and subject specialists can help you develop modules and packages which are suited to the needs of your organisation and your staff. The modules will have academic relevance and quality and may also be used to help your employees study for further qualifications.

Career Opportunities
Career opportunities would depend upon the areas of study undertaken. In addition to academic study CAS also provides you with the opportunity to develop, demonstrate and assess, transferable and employability skills, as these can be integrated into your CAS programme of study.

Entry Requirements
It is strongly recommended that you discuss your options with the CAS Programme Leader prior to application. CAS Programme Leader, Maria Dawson, can be contacted on: 0191 515 3303 or via email at maria.dawson@sunderland.ac.uk. The Programme Leader will then guide you through the application process.
