AbstractThe abstract of the article goes here. This is one of the most important section of your paper. Make sure that the abstract concisely captures the essence of the paper and the main contributions of your work. Its length should be from 10-20 lines. You should think of the abstract as an invitation to read the paper: describe what the paper contains, and why reading it is worth the readers time. future directions for research in section IV. Finally, this paper is concluded in section V. II. BACKGROUND Introduce the topic in a logical fashion: i.e., the presentation should ow from one topic to another. Ensure that there is no abruptness in the writing. As you begin a long section, you should introduce the organization of that section to facilitate the reader. III. M AIN This is the main section of your paper. You should change the name of this section and align it to the topic of your survey. A. Subsections Name Feel free to break down sections into subsections according to the hierarchy of your ideas. Organization of the paper is very important and it typically takes numerous iterations before you get it right. Do not feel overly attached to your rst draft, since you will nd that editing it through rewriting and rearranging will be necessary for improved presentation. 1) Sub-subsections Name: You can also have subsubsections. Sometimes you might need to create bullet lists A or enumerated lists. The way to do that in L TEXcan be seen in this documents .tex le. Unnumbered list: this is an unnumbered bullet list this is this lists second bullet Numbered list: 1) this is an numbered bullet list 2) this is this lists second item

In this section, you should introduce the subject matter of the paper. You should think of this as the formal start of the paper. You may think of the abstract as a detached summary of the paper. The real paper starts here. Importance of clarity and preciseness: It is important to ensure that your paper is written well. A survey paper is an exercise in exposition or explanation. You will not be able to do your job satisfactorily if you write sloppily. Please note that technical writing is distinct from non-technical writing (like ction) because the main purpose of a technical article is to convey and clarify a technical idea. Therefore, you should avoid ambiguity, suspense, grand expressions, etc. In particular, scientic writing has to be precise. In other words, you should be prepared to back up every sentence you say with evidence. If you are making some assertion, be ready to back it up with a reference. As an example of a reference, or a citation, this is a reference [1] to a classical book on English writing which you should denitely refer to. Importance of referencing other works: A survey paper should refer to many documents since its aim is to survey the state-of-the-art in a particular subject. It should refer to all important works in that particular area. Survey papers address broad topics and can easily include more than 50 (or even 100!) references [2] [3] [4]. It is important not to get intimidated by the mass of literature available on your topic of interest. You should read Keshavs practical tips on how to read a paper [5]. [TODO: PAPERS CONTRIBUTIONS] The main contributions of this survey paper are as follows. List your papers contributions here. [TODO: PAPERS ORGANIZATION ] The rest of the paper is organized in the following manner. In section II, the necessary background to our subject topic is provided and basic terminology is introduced. The topic is explored in more depth in section III. We introduce open research issues and

C. Help on Research You can read about various tips on how to do quality research in the following book available at SEECS library [7]. D. Tips on writing well You can nd valuable tips on technical writing through the following references [8] [9].

E. Devices for improving comprehension Remember that the primary purpose of a survey and tutorial paper is exposition. You want to introduce a broad topic to a reasonably intelligent non-specialist. To make things easier for the reader, explore using various devices for presentation. Deciding on the best format for presentation of technical data is more an art than a science. You can learn a lot by reading any of the following books of Edward Tufte, available at SEECS library [10] [11] [12]. In particular, explore using gures and tables for improving your presentation. An example gure can be seen in gure ??. In general, you should try to use .eps graphic les, and avoid .jpeg and .gif images, due to resolution issues. An example table can be seen in table I IV. O PEN R ESEARCH I SSUES AND F UTURE W ORK This is an extremely important section of your survey paper. Your paper should not only present disconnected summaries of the individual works, but should synthesize broad insights that apply to the overall eld. This is the place where you should provide the big picture of what the main research issues in your subject area are. Highlighting and dening research problems is a very important component of research. It is said with not a lot of exaggeration that a problem well-dened is half solved. As you read various papers on your subject topic, you should be able to categorize the works and identify missing gaps. These missing gaps are to be highlighted in this section as potential future works for research. V. C ONCLUSION In this section, you should conclude the paper by reiterating the main points of your paper. You should enlist the main contributions of your survey paper and differentiate your work from existing surveys (if any) by demonstrating how your work is extending the current body of knowledge.
