Seismic strengthening of Masonry Structures: conventional system

Prof. A. Prota November 20, 2013
1

Poggio Picenze: Local collapse due to a wall discontinuity

Villa SantAngelo: alteration of the original structural configuration: wooden tie, originally well connected to the external wall by means of an iron device, has been cutted during an heavy refurbishment

Tempera: the heavy roof caused the collapse of masonry walls

Villa SantAngelo: the R.C. roof implied the masonry walls collapse.

LAquila: at second floor it was inserted a R.C. stair.

Paganica: insertion of a deep R.C. slab

Damages and Vulnerability Floor slabs and Vaults

Castelnuovo: poor connection between masonry walls.

Paganica: overturning crack involving a portion of masonry wall.

Tempera: overturning of upper part of facade wall.

San Demetrio: typical cracks in the masonry lintel above the opening

Villa SantAngelo: inplane shear cracks on the whole facade wall.

SantEusanio Forconese: in-plane shear cracks on masonry walls

Castelnuovo: total collapse due to poor masonry quality Villa SantAngelo: collapse due to the trasversal connections lack
