Are you ready for the road? You didn't think you'd be able to just pack up and go, did you? Not so fast!
Your car needs special attention before you go on a long driving trip. Starting a vacation with a car that has mechanical problems is a sure fire way to ruin a trip. Take some simple precautions before you hit the road to help make your vacation more pleasant. Cooling System The cooling system needs to be flushed and refilled at least once a year in order to keep the cooling system in good working order. If your coolant hasn't been changed during the past year, get the radiator flused and filled before you start your trip. Check the air conditioning. Is it cold? if not, have a technician inspect it to find out why not. Drive Belts / HosesDrive Belts and hoses can deteriorate with age and heat. Check all the belts and hoses in your car for signs of cracks or leaking. Any cracked or damaged belts or hoese should be replaced before heading out on the road for a long trip. BatteryA dead battery is one of the more common reasons for break-down. Make sure yours is in good condition before you go. EngineIf your car is due for a tune-up soon, go ahead and get one before leaving on a long trip. Check your owners manual for the proper intervals for tuning up your engine. FluidsMake sure to check the levels of transmission fluid, engine oil, brake fluid, washer fluid, power steering fluid and, of course, gas. If you are due for an oil change, get one before you take the trip. Suspension If you are going to be towing something, or carrying a heavy load, you should definately get your shocks and springs checked out to make sure they can handle the load. TiresMake sure all tires are properly inflated to the specifications in your owner's manual and have plenty of tread with no uneven wear. Don't forget your spare tire! In an emergency, you don't want to find out that your spare is flat. BrakesHave your brakes inspected prior to your trip to ensure that everything is in good working order. Windshield WipersMost people don't think about their windshield wipers until they are no longer working. Don't wait until you need them to find out your wipers need to be replaced. Check them before your trip. Refill your windshield washer fluid. LightsTest the brake lights, turn signals and headlights to make sure they work properly and have enough illumiation.

Don't be an aggressive driver Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by as much as 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent on city streets, which results in 7 to 49 cents per gallon. Avoid excessive idling - Sitting idle gets zero miles per gallon. Letting the vehicle warm up for one to two minutes is sufficient. Observe the speed limitGas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Each mpg driven over 60 will result in an additional 10 cents per gallon. To maintain a constant speed on the highway, cruise control is recommended. Combining errands into one trip saves gas and time. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much fuel as a longer multi-purpose trip covering the same distance. Avoid carrying unneeded heavy items in the truck. An extra 100 pounds can cut fuel efficiency by a percent or two.
Vehicle gas caps - About 17 percent of the vehicles on the roads have gas caps that are either damaged, loose or are missing altogether, causing 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize every year.
Gas Prices
Here are some gas saving maintenance and driving tips that really work:
any homeowners need general repairs and remodels at this time of the year to get ready for Summer and Fall and these minor repairs or improvements can and will make a big difference in your comfort and your pocketbook. However, homeowners can and do feel a little lost in finding a reputable craftsman to do the work. They also become confused and disillusioned by some companies because they dont show up, or try to price over the telephone and do not complete the work in a timely fashion, if at all. Handyman Connection, a home repair and remodeling service with more than 148 locations nationally and over 18 years of experience, offer tips to help find the right person for the job. Nick and Tim Dvorak are in their sixth year as owner/operators of Handyman Connection. As Licensed General Contractors they offer on time appointments, prices by the job, and guaranteed results. Nick commented, Many customers come to us after theyve had problems with unlicensed repairmen that could have been avoided initially. Tim added, People should know it is OK to ask questions and set guidelines before hiring anyone to come into their home. Additionally, the more questions you ask the better informed you will be about how the work will be accomplished and the person and company you are planning to use. Handyman Connection is also a member of the Better Business Bureau and Chamber of Commerce, which are great resources for collecting information on who you are planning to do business with. Handyman Connection offers the following questions to ask as you proceed to hire someone to do work in your home. 1. Number and proof of their Contractors License? www.cslb.ca.gov

2 The answer is TRUE! Some additives in anti-freeze coolant, such as anti-corrosive chemicals, can be depleted with time, yet the anti-freeze coolant looks OK. Regular flushing of the cooling system and replacement of anti-freeze coolant helps avoid a later, and bigger, expense in radiator repair.
1 The answer is FALSE! Wear bars are 2/32" deep. When your tires wear to that point, they're vulnerable to failure and to hydroplaning on a wet road.
3 The answer is TRUE! New spark plug technology, along with improved engine design and lead-free fuel, have greatly extended spark plug life. However, the active word in question #3 is "may". Fine print in most owners manuals indicate circumstances where more frequent engine service is recommended. (Tests show that a 4 cylinder car with just one spark plug misfiring takes 54% more time than normal to accelerate from 25 mph to 55 mph.) 4 The answer is TRUE! Other causes of brake noise include the squeal of a wear warning indicator or, in the case of excessive wear, the annoying sound of metal against metal.
5 The answer is FALSE! That interval is recommended for driving under optimum conditions. Check your owners manual. Most technicians advise 3,000 4,000 mile oil changes for maximum engine life. Always change the filter when changing oil.
8 The answer is FALSE! Back to diagnosis. The engine cant turn over if the starter is shot.
7 The answer is FALSE! Invest your money in a diagnostic check-up. The engine turned over, so the battery probably is OK.
6 The answer is FALSE! A clogged fuel filter is most likely to cause a faltering engine under heavy load.
10 The answer is FALSE! Weak or overloaded springs cause the rear end to sag, not weak shocks. Air shocks, which can be inflated for extra support, can be installed as can overload springs or other auxiliary support accessories available in auto supply stores.
9 The answer is FALSE! Cooling system trouble is the most common cause of car trouble on the open road.

Of the thousands of components in a vehicle, tires are probably the most important. Your life literally depends on them one hundred percent of the time you are on the road. Recent events, in which tire failures have allegedly caused a number of fatal crashes, have focused attention on the vital role tires play in vehicle safety. Caring for tires is extremely important and relatively easy. In fact, The Rubber Manufacturers Association recommends getting in the habit of taking five minutes every month to check your tires, including the spare. Proper tire pressure goes a long way toward improving your vehicle's gas mileage. Tire treads must have at least 2/32- inch depth in every groove. If the tread is wearing differently between the edges and the middle tread, check the tire pressure. If one side of your tire tread is wearing more than the other, it may be time for an alignment. Check tire pressure. The correct pressure should be listed in the owner's manual and on the inside of your driver's door.

Brake Rotors (discs)should be inspected all the way around the surface and on both sides for any concentric scoring (grooves) or obvious defects. If defects are found, replace your rotors immediately. Any rotor discoloration may be a sign of overheating and an inspection by a brake repair professional is needed. Brake Padswill normally match rotor scoring but should also be inspected for uneven wear, breakage or cracking on the friction surface. Again, if defects are found, replace the pads immediately. Many cars also have brake pad sensors to warn of pad wear. If your car uses sensors, replace these at the same time as your pads. Brake Drums (if equipped)should also be inspected on a regular basis. Check for the same types of flaws as noted above. The drums should not have excessive grooves or have a deep "trough" dug into them where the shoes ride. Brake Shoes (if equipped)should be worn evenly and have no rivets protruding to the friction surface. A "spongy" brake pedal or one that's gotten lower underfoot also needs looking into. It could be caused by sticking calipers, worn pads, low fluid or hydraulic system problems. Constant brake noiseis never a good sound and any grinding noise spells real trouble! Most importantly:As soon as any problem is noticed, get it repaired immediately. Delaying brake repairs is extremely dangerous. Overstressed rotors and drums can break. Brakes may be too worn or damaged to stop your car in an emergency. Even if you manage to avoid physical harm, the longer you delay fixing brake problems, the more you increase the cost of doing so. Remember, dont take chances with your brakes!

t some point in our lifetime, most of us will encounter a situation that requires expert help. When you need legal help, it can be a daunting task trying to find the right person to answer your questions and to provide some direction.
