Saccharometers for Brewers and Distillers
Our range of precision round stem Saccharometers has the following advantages:
Easy to read double scales.
All individually numbered and certified to traceable standards.
All available with UKAS or works calibration certificates. There is a 10 discount
on works calibration certificates bought with a new hydrometer (see page 9).
Coloured bands at the bottom of the paper scale for easy range identification.
Graduated in Degrees of Specific Gravity 20/20C.
Adjusted for use at 20C and 45mN/m surface tension.
Saccharometers with an accuracy of 0.2 or better are suitable for ABV
determination and customs declarations.

Customs and Excise Pattern Saccharometers for Distillers

The SC2520 range of Saccharometers is made to the old Customs and Excise Notice
39 specification. They are 250mm in length with a range of 10 specific gravity and
0.2 subdivisions. Maximum permitted error is 0.2. Any range of 10 not shown

BSI Kitemark on Alcohol Hydrometers
If you are using standard hydrometers to BS 5470, the BSI Kitemark on your
hydrometer is an assurance of quality, accuracy, and reliability.
It means that conformity to the standard is continually monitored and BSI
independently tests samples to make sure this is the case.
It means you can be certain of the accuracy of the hydrometers to 0.2 kg/m
BS 5470
without having to send them off to be calibrated.
An inaccurate measurement can cause problems and cost money in duty declarations, so it is
important to use measuring instruments you can trust.
Kitemarked Alcohol Hydrometers to BS 5470

These are made to the BS5470 specification, and are 300mm long overall, with a
torpedo shaped bulb. The hydrometers have a range of 20kg/m between
780/800kg/m and 980/1000kg/m at 20C. Graduations are every 0.2kg/m. For
use in Ethanol/Water mixtures only.
UKAS certification of the hydrometers means that the hydrometers are tested at an
independent UKAS density laboratory, and a certificate is issued showing calibration
corrections at four points on the scale.

Accessories for Alcohol Hydrometers

The Practical Alcohol Tables Volume 2 (B0260) is used to convert temperature and
hydrometer reading to percentage alcohol by volume at 20C.
The carrying case (B0270) will hold 6 hydrometers and one thermometer safely in a
foam plastic lining. Spare linings are available (B0270/L).
The glass trial jar for use with the alcohol hydrometers has a 320mm internal depth
and 76mm internal diameter, and is available both with (BJ3480) and without
(BJ3480/NL) a lip. Capacity 1.5 litre.
The B0446 is a 245mm thermometer, red spirit filled, graduated on glass, with a
320mm stainless steel back designed to hang on the inside of a glass hydrometer jar.
Individually numbered for traceability. Range -5/+40C in 0.5C, accurate to 0.5C
This replaces the mercury filled version (the B0545 to BS5471).

Hydrometers measuring Ethanol % vol at 20C, for use in distillers spirit safes.
Spirit safe hydrometers measuring kg/m can be made to order. We can supply
spirit safe bowls and glasses to order. Please state dimensions. If hydrometer jars
are used, the BJ2266 and BJ2551 jars are suitable, depending on bulb diameter.

These Saccharometers measure percentage sugar by weight at 20C (i.e. the Brix,
Balling and Plato scales). They have easy to read double scales, are individually
numbered, and are certified to traceable standards. They are for use at a surface
tension of 45mN/m.

BS718 Hydrometers
These Hydrometers are made to BS 718:1991 and measure density in g/ml. The
standard series hydrometers are for general purpose use. The SP series are for use
with oil and fuels typical densities are 0.73g/ml for petrol, 0.83g/ml for diesel and
0.88 g/ml for biodiesel.
They have easy to read double scales, are individually numbered, with
conformance certificates to traceable standards.

Certification of Hydrometers
All of our precision hydrometers and Saccharometers come with our own certificate
of conformance. This states the specification to which the hydrometer or
Saccharometer is made, and the traceable standards it has been checked against.
This gives a record of checks traceable to national standards as required by ISO9000
quality systems.
For the highest accuracy in reading hydrometers, a certificate of calibration with
corrections should be used. We can provide certificates with corrections at two or
three points from our own testing lab, or certificates from external UKAS accredited
testing laboratories.

Fermenting Vat Scoop Thermometers
The B0415 and B0420 are 253mm long refill thermometers (without cases), red
spirit filled and graduated on perspex back. Ranges 40/80F and 5/28C
respectively.
The B0536 is similar to the above with a range of 10/45C, used by distillers.
The B0424 thermometer case fits all the above refill thermometers, and is stainless
steel with a plain base.

Mercury Filled Thermometers

The B0505 is a 305mm mercury filled laboratory thermometer (not numbered).
The B0512 is a 305mm thermometer to BS1704, and is available with a UKAS test
certificate.
The B0517 is 220mm mercury filled thermometer to BS1365 and is available with a
UKAS certificate. It is the thermometer recommended by the I.O.B. for original
gravity and alcohol content determination.

The B0370/TE is a versatile thermometer with a robust ABS case with biomaster
antibacterial protection. Reading C or F, it has a switchable 0.1/1 resolution,

pH Testing
The B0610 SenZ pH Pro has a resolution of 0.01pH and an accuracy of 0.05pH. It
features a clear, easy to read 8mm LCD display, and calibration at the touch of a
button in pH7.0 Buffer solution. The pH readings are automatically compensated for
temperature.
The B0620 Walklab pH meter is a highly accurate instrument with a 0.01pH
resolution and accuracy. It simultaneously displays pH and temperature, and is

Brewers' and Distillers' Gauging Rods

Rods are graduated every 2mm and figured every 1cm in accordance with
requirements of HM Customs and Excise. They are normally made of seasoned
wood and have a 25x25mm section, but can also be made in stainless steel with a
19x19mm section. The maximum length of a one-piece rod is 250cm. Larger rods
are made in two or more pieces by means of scarf joints (as shown in the B1160
illustration), or screw joints (as shown in the B1171).
The B1160 wooden Float Rods screw into a stainless steel welded float. Any length
made to order. For wet dip.
The B1162 wooden Shoulder Rods have a metal shoulder and tipped end. Any
length made to order. For dry dip.
The B1171 wooden Wash Charger Rods have a ring at the top and brass T-piece at
the bottom to prevent withdrawal. Any length made to order. For wet dip. Brass

The B1173 wooden Spirit Vat Rods are brass tipped at the top with a solid brass

The B1185 mild steel and B1186 stainless steel Wet Dip Tapes are for deep
fermenting vessels etc. where rigid dip rods are impracticable. Graduated in cm and

The B1187 Mini Vacuity Rod is used to measure evaporation (the angels share) in
American barrels, Hogsheads, and Butts for 3 to 9 years. It also measures dry dip up
to 30cm.

Determination
New Reeves Stainless Steel Carbonation Tester
The B2030 Stainless Steel Universal Carbonation Tester has an all stainless steel
piercer block, making it stronger and more durable than our crossbar tester. The
spring-loaded piercing lever locks into place when down, and rises easily when the
release button is pressed. The push button snift valve closes automatically when not
depressed, and the new overflow tube directs messy overflow away from the tester.
A wing handle on the single height adjustment clamp makes it easy to raise and
lower the block. Price includes B1138 pressure gauge, B2030/RD rinsing device,
B0360/DT400 digital thermometer and B2050 CO2 Slide Rule.

Pressure Gauges for Carbonation Testers

The individually numbered B1138 pressure gauges have a stainless steel bourdon
tube in a 63mm stainless steel watertight case with zero-setting device, and are
screwed 1/8" B.S.P. for use with all Reeves Carbonation Testing equipment. Ranges
are 0/30 psi (0/2 bar), 0/60 psi (0/4 bar), and 0/100 psi (0/7 bar). Accuracy 1.6%.
We can repair and recalibrate B1138 pressure gauges promptly, normally within 7
days. A pressure gauge test pump is also available, please ask for details.
The B2045 in bottle thermometer is a bi-metal dial thermometer with a thin pointed
end. The stainless steel 202mm stem fits through the hole made by the B2033/117
piercer and is suitable for use with all our testers.
The B2050 CO2 Slide Rule is for determining volumes Bunsen of CO2. It is a plastic
slide rule graduated on one side in C with pressure in psi and bar, and on the other
side the same, in F.

Safe Carbonation Tester

The B2090 Safe Carbonation Tester is designed to ensure operator safety when
making CO2 tests on products in glass bottles. It has a brass canister with hinged
cap, pressure gauge B1138 and Side Snift, made to suit individual bottle size. The
bottle is completely and safely enclosed during the whole process. The hole that is
made in the cap will accept the dial type bottle thermometer B2045. Please send a
full sample capped bottle with order.
The B2095 rotary holder is a wall mounting back plate with ball race and bearings to
take the Safe Carbonation Tester to prevent operator fatigue, particularly when
large bottles are tested. By controlling the number of swings, greater consistency is
obtained than with hand shaking, providing that the back plate is mounted
vertically. A special boss is incorporated in the canister of the Safe Tester and
locates in the centre of the ball race where it is retained by a quick release knob.

Bar Spirit Testing Hydrometer Set
For use by Trading Standards, and stocktakers in hotels, clubs and managed houses.
The set comprises a 130mm Glass Hydrometer with glass jar and thermometer in a
pocket case complete with chart for checking pure spirits at retail strength to detect
adulteration. A 75ml sample is required for the standard jar, but a 25ml jar is also
included for single shots. All components are available as replacements. A
separate leaflet is available on request. Both the hydrometer and thermometer are
individually numbered and the hydrometer is certified to a traceable standard, and
available with a certificate of calibration.
The standard hydrometer (B0141/H1) tests normal strength spirits (33-45%). For
higher strengths up to 55% an extra hydrometer is needed (B0141/H2). A
Saccharometer is also available for testing Specific Gravity of beer (B0141/S1).

Alcohol Test Kit for beers, ciders, wines and liqueurs

The alcohol content of beer, cider, wine, and some liqueuers can be calculated from
the readings of two instruments: a hydrometer and a Zeiss refractometer. Less than
150ml of sample are required for the hydrometer, and only a few drops for the
refractometer. By following the simple instructions a reading with an accuracy of
+/- 0.5% ethanol by volume can be determined. Not suitable for customs
declarations where higher precision is required.

variable charge for handling and delivery: a
minimum 14.00 charge for consignments of 12kg or
less for mainland UK deliveries, or 10.50 if a part
