¾ Satpura Province comprises granite gneisses and metamorphics,

Gondwana sequence, Deccan trap, etc.

ARCHAEANS
¾ Chhattisgarh
g owns the oldest rock in the Indian Peninsula ((3700
Ma)
¾ Archaean rocks are older than 2500 Ma in age g and are
represented by wide spread cratonic blocks, occupying ∼60,000
km2
¾ Chhattisgarh has observed all the orogenic, metallogenic and
mineralogenic epochs activated during various periods
¾ These are host rock for circulating mineralising solutions /
magma and also forming basements for the sedimentary basins

Mineral Resources Department, Government of Chhattisgarh, India

PROTEROZOICS
¾ World over, largest number of mineral deposits (90%) are hosted
by Proterozoic rocks
¾ These rocks
Th k range from
f 2500 to
t 570 Ma
M in i ∼
i age occupying
53,000 km2 (40%) land in the State
¾ Most of the bulk and high
g value mineral deposits
p are associated
to these rocks in Chhattisgarh like iron ore, limestone, dolomite,
diamond, gold, etc.
¾ Mafic and ultramafic rocks are widely occurring as intrusive in
the ancient Archaean platforms which include diamondiferous
kimberlite
¾ Quartz veins with gold and base metal mineralisation
¾ LCT class and Alexandrite containing pegmatites
¾ The sedimentary basins contain bulk mineral deposits
Mineral Resources Department, Government of Chhattisgarh, India
MESOZOICS

¾ Major coal deposits are confined to Gondwana Formations in the

world, named after the “Gond” tribes of Central India

¾ These rift controlled rocks are widely occurring in the north and
northeastern parts of Chhattisgarh occupying ∼19,000 km2 in the
State

¾ Gondwana coals of Chhattisgarh

g are mostlyy of ppower ggrade with
medium carbon content

Mineral Resources Department, Government of Chhattisgarh, India

CENOZOICS
¾ Cenozoic era includes rocks of basaltic flows and sub
sub-recent
recent to
Recent period ranging up to 65 Ma in age and occupies ∼ 3000
km2 in the State

¾ These rocks form plateau and cap over older formations, which
are mostly exposed in the northern parts of the State

¾ Important bauxite deposits confined to this formation

¾ Laterite is widely developed in parts of the State
