Presidents Message Linda A Doll As your returning President, I am grateful for a wonderful Board of Directors, a great Gallery Director, enthusiastic volunteers and an awesome membership. This should be a great year; contact me if youd like to help or have concerns. I look forward to working with all of you. Our organization is run entirely by volunteers and we are so grateful to those who have served and to those agreeing to serve for the next year. We certainly couldnt do it without these generous souls. Check the left-hand column of the newsletter to see those artists serving on the board of directors for the 2014-2015 year. The votes are in and our Jurors for our Annual Exhibition have been chosen for the next two years. Im thrilled to announce the results of this election. Alternates are listed and will be moved to active juror status if any of the jurors cannot complete their responsibilities. The prospectus for the 2014 Members Only Exhibition has been mailed out. If you didnt receive a copy, you can download it from our web page: www.nationalwatercolorsociety.org or you can email me: nwspresident@gmail.com and Id be happy to email one to you. We have hired an outside data entry person to help any artist that cant submit online. We are uploading images through our own web page this year. This will save us thousands of dollars and hundreds of data entry hours. Deadline for the Member show uploaded entries is April 6, 2014. Mailed entries must be postmarked by April 5, 2014. This year promises to be an exciting year as we continue to take NWS into the digital age. Our new membership management system, Wild Apricot, was definitely a first step to completing this goal. Here you will find your member profile, all information about NWS, including newsletters, bylaws, prospectus, member news, workshop registrations and photos from past events. You are able to update your own member record, change addresses, email addresses and web page addresses whenever needed. This will be particularly handy for our Snow Birds who move often during the year. You are also able to sign up for workshops and demos, and upload images for our juried exhibitions.  Figuring it Out

egarding the NWS National Exhibition, For goodness sake, why do the rules refuse paintings that have been shown in other shows before? Whats more, why do they make such a big deal out of

requiring that the paintings have been painted only in the last two years? What are they thinking? NWS is the only national exhibition that has these odd rules . . . .why do they bother? It would sure be easier to compete if these rules didnt exist. We hear questions and statements like these every year when we publish the prospectus for our annual National Exhibition. You may not be aware of this rule Board members and officers may not be included in our National Exhibition.Wow!!Why is that?Think about it: There are no shortcuts or shoe ins in the NWS National Exhibition for any reason. As a contestant, you can be assured of absolute honesty and integrity in the selection of entries and judging of awards. No favoritism or cronyism, whatsoever! NWS is so sensitive about this aspect of the selection process that the jurors MAY NOT talk among themselves during the selection process! (Bet you didnt know that!!) I was stunned when I learned of how strict NWS is about these rules! As a person who came to know NWS first by gaining acceptance to the show, achieving awards, then gaining an intimate view of the insides of the organization by being a board member, I can now see that the motives of the board of directors that arranged these rules were incredibly wise! I am not sure who made these rules or when they were made. I am, however, extremely proud to be part of such an organization that provides such honor in its selection process!! Consider the effects that these rules insure: To be a leader in the world of watermedia painting exhibitions by showing only the newest and best of the art, and (this is the big one) to set the environment of rich competition so that the art community itself grows and reaches past tradition and habit and is constantly evolving. Would you rather see that same re-tread paintings that have shown in many other shows come to NWS and take our awards?...or would you rather be in a show that honors and exalts the newest, freshest work in our painting community? As a member of NWS, you may have noticed that NWS is always at the leading edge of new innovations in watermedia painting. Just look over the last ten to twenty years of show catalogs and you will see that the winners of those shows went beyond just pretty pictures. We take pride in rewarding the new and different. And, by encouraging and rewarding those sorts of paintings, there are implied higher standards put into the painting community. The result is that we see artists exploring ever deeper into the realm of creative expression. For example, look at the artists and paintings which have won top honors in the last decade or two: Robert E. Wood and his iconic style, George James and his innovative paintings on Yupo, Nicholas Simmons and his huge dripping portraits, or the innovative abstractions of Miles Batt, Sr. Because we demand the newest work and put all that into a highly competitive exhibition, we witness the appearance and methods of watercolor painting evolving from the same old tried and true to the new and exciting. It took me awhile, but it finally became quite obvious that the purpose of these shows and the purpose of associations, such as NWS, is not only to lift up the artists and their paintings, but to sponsor and encourage growth by asking for the newest, best efforts of the painting community at large.

he National Watercolor Society joined forces with the International Society of Experimental Artists to create an exchange exhibit with The Welsh Group of Wales of the United Kingdom. This exchange exhibit was a small works show with half the work coming from the Welsh Group and half the work from a juried exhibit from the United States. Linda Daly Baker, NWS, served as the juror and selected 62 works to be combined with the 38 works from Wales and was exhibited first at BigArts in Sanibel Island, Florida and then traveled to San Pedro to be on exhibit in the NWS Gallery in conjunction with the NWS Annual International Exhibit. The work is now crated and traveling to the Country of Wales where it will exhibit next at Art Central in Barry, Wales from July 12 through August 30th, 2014. The opening reception will be held on July 12, 2014 in Barry. For more information please check the NWS and ISEA websites.  Workshop Etiquette

Be conscious of your attitude.

any aspiring artists try to learn painting by attending workshops. It should come as no surprise that you will be attending these workshops with people of all different skill levels. After a recent challenging experience at a watercolor workshop with a truly wonderful instructor, I felt the need to help create a Code of Workshop Etiquette from the viewpoint of the attendee. I received input for this list from many fellow artists and hope it helps alleviate some of the behaviors that can ruin a workshop.
Remember, we all started as beginners and the learning curve in painting can cause great anxiety. Be conscious of your attitude, one negative person can poison the room which doesnt allow others the opportunity to learn. And please be patient with your fellow painters; you are there to learn techniques not to produce masterpieces.

Dont monopolize the instructors time.

There are many participants in the workshop wanting attention. Ask the instructor whether he/she will entertain questions during their demonstration. Oftentimes the instructor is at a point in a painting where it is critical that they focus on the painting.

Ask the instructor ahead of time if he/she allows photographs of his demo or work. Be flexible.
Sometimes the instructor is in the middle of a demo when lunchtime rolls around. Be patient until they reach a manageable stopping time. Return from lunch on time; dont expect your instructor to hold his demo and instruction until you return.

Take notes
While watching the demo and listening to the lecture, jot down notes to help when you sit to work on your own painting.

Dont keep asking the instructor, What color is that?

Often it is a combination of many dabs of color that are already on the palette. If there is a critical need to know a particular color, the instructor will point it out.

Bring your own supplies.

Make sure you obtain a copy of the instructors workshop supply list ahead of time and purchase your supplies. This is especially important if you are attending a plein air workshop with no local art supply stores. Dont ask to borrow supplies from your neighbor. It is difficult for some people to say no and it could cause them to feel uncomfortable.

Dont take critiques personally.

Instructors are not there to tell you your painting is wonderful. They are there to point out potential problems with the painting. Be open to suggestions and if you dont understand what they are trying to tell you, ask clarifying questions. Other attendees should not contribute to this critique, unless invited by the instructor. It can be confusing and counter productive to the critique process. While the instructor offers suggestions for improvement, the conversation about the painting will benefit everyone.

Dont bring your previously finished artwork for a personal critique.

The techniques you are learning wont necessarily translate from one to another.

 China Small Image Exchange Exhibit

hou Tianya, CAA, NWS, has invited the National Watercolor Society (NWS) to collaborate in hosting a small image exchange exhibition. The

small image show will be held in conjunction with the 2015 Shenzhen International Biennial Exhibition -- curated by Zhou Tianya -- in Shenzhen, China. In 2016, following the exhibition in Shenzhen, the small paintings from both countries will travel to San Pedro, CA, where they will be shown in the NWS Gallery. Separate opening receptions are proposed for both the Shenzhen International Biennial and the small image exhibitions, possibly on the same day. The small images submitted by NWS artists will be juried by Zhou Tianya, and Linda Doll will serve as juror for the Chinese artists paintings. Zhou Tianya is a well-known artist, teacher, author, and editor, who also has served -- for the past seven (7) years -- as Chair of the Art Department at Jingshu Academy of Technology in Hubei, China. Linda Doll, President of NWS, is an internationally-known artist, teacher, juror, and workshop instructor. Small works for this joint collaboration will consist of images no larger than 15 in the longest dimension. Catalogs of the small image exhibition will be printed through the generosity of China, and each accepted artist will receive this wonderful catalog. (2014) Sandy Kay, has been awarded Honorable Mention for Of This TimeOf That Place in The Artists Magazine March issue: Over 60 Competition. Melanie Lacki, NWS, won the Bronze Award for Cherries Jubilee in the California Watercolor Associations National Exhibition 2014 at the Olive Hyde Art Center, Mission San Jose, Ca. and wrote an accepted proposal for an exhibition titled, Just Add Water, showing at the Harrington Art Gallery, at the Firehouse Arts Center, in Pleasanton, CA, featuring her work and fellow NWS members, Anne Fallin, David Savellano, and Claire Verbiest. Jan Ledbetter AWS, NWS, received notification her Maya Women of Chichicastenango has been selected for the Shenzhen Watercolour International Biennial Exhibition 2013 Traveling Exhibition. It will be displayed at the Ningbo Art Museum in March and then proceed to seven other venues throughout China. Dave Maxwell won Honorable Mention for Interior Mobility in the Shenzhen International Watercolor Biennial held in Shenzhen, China. r. mike nichols received Second Place Watercolor in the 28th Annual National Art Show at the Dog Show for Time for My Walk. He also received a First Place Watercolor for Trout Man and a Third Place Watercolor for Kolorful Koi at the 2014 Winter Exhibition of The Arts Colony in Corona. Jill Poyerd, NWS, published three workbooks to help fellow artists with technology-based tasks: Editing & Saving Images with Photoshop, Editing & Saving Images with Photoshop Elements, and Creating a FREE Website Using Weebly.com., available on Amazon.com. She will have a solo exhibit this May at the Arts Club of Washington in Washington, DC. Kris Preslan, NWS,TWSA, WW, WAS-H, was awarded the Grand Prize by International Artist magazine Cars Ill Never Own, #10 and her article is to be published in the upcoming issue of Art Collector magazine. Frank Spino, won the Strawbridge Art League Merit Award and the Peoples Choice Award at the Brevard Watercolor Societys Annual Exhibit with Fresh Heirlooms . Liz Walker received Signature membership in ISEA (International Society of Experimental Artists), after having her work accepted in three of their annual juried exhibits Steve Walters, NWS, won Best of Show in the NCA Bold Expressions International Exhibition for Annitra in Lavender and the M. Carol Z. Brody, NWS, was awarded First Place in the Palm Beach Watercolor Societys Members Juried Exhibition in Florida, for her painting Papers and Images IV. Carol also received Signature Membership in Watercolor West and in the Florida Watercolor Society this fall. Diane Cannon had her painting Ascending included in Acrylic Works, The Best of Acrylic Painting, released this February by North Light Books. Jeanne Dobie, NWS, TWSA, WHS, PWS, FWS, PWCS,will be one of the Awards Jurors for the 2014 American Watercolor Society International Juried Annual Exhibition, NY. The other two Awards Jurors are Frank Webb and Eric Wiegardt. She was juror for the Phillips Mill Exhibition, New Hope, PA. which helps foster the Bucks County Impressionist Artists movement. Jeanne won the Keystone State Medal Award at the Pennsylvania Watercolor Societys, 34th International Juried Exhibition, PA. Lynn Ferris, NWS, AWS, has been awarded Signature Status in the American Watercolor Society. Lynn will also be the juror for the Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society Aqueous Signature and Transparent Show as well as the awards judge for the Gainesville Fine Art Associations Winter Fine Art Fair Bev Jozwiak, NWS, AWS, won the Claborn Family Award in the Fallbrooks 5th Annual Signature American Watermedia Exhibition for her painting Three dancers. Her 164 page hardbound book Painting Life with Life published by Creative Art Press will be released May, 2014. he second volume of Inspirations & Technical Breakthroughs, Secrets from the Contemporary International Watercolor Masters in Chinese language by Ruan Hoe and Zhou Tianya, NWS is published by Jilin Fine Arts Press, China, in December 2013. Following the first volume, the second volume features another nine Signature Member of NWS: Mary Whyte, Susan Swinand, Dean Mitchell, Ted Nuttall, George James, Joseph Alleman, Carl Purcell, Peggy Zalucha, and Nicholas Simmons. In the book they candidly discuss their inspirations, generously share their creative processes and show-case their exemplary work with Chinese readers. Inspirations & Technical Breakthroughs is the product of an international collaboration. Editor Dr. Ruan Hoe, a ChineseAmerican watercolorist and a principal researcher at UCLA, translated and edited the text. Second editor Zhou Tianya, a well-known Chinese professional watercolor artist, member of Chinese Artist Association, signature member of NWS and AWS, curator of Shenzhen Watercolor Biennial 2013-14, originally fathered the idea and designed the entire book. As the first of its kind, the first volume was critically acclaimed in China and its first editions 4000 copies are almost sold out. The second volume (4000 copies) is currently being distributed to all major Chinese bookstores and also available online (paper back, 11.6x 8.8, 144 pages, 78.00RMB, approximately $12.50USD). IN MEMORIAM
DEE KNOTT, NWS, 70, Nationally acclaimed watercolorist, died August 14, 2013 at her home in Beaufort NC. She devoted her energy and passion for painting exclusively to transparent watercolors in her 35-year professional career. Dee Knotts paintings have veen widely exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the country and she has received numerous national awards. She is survived by her husband Ray who said she was very proud of her longstanding membership and relationship with NWS. LEW WALLACE , NWS, died on Nov 20, 2013. A technical illustrator with various aerospace companies at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, he developed his own watercolor techniques for painting nature, rocks and water. His work has been featured in national and international art magazines.
