he Antinori family has been making wine for over six hundred years, since
Ciovanni di Iiero Antinori became part of the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri in
1385. Troughout its long history, spanning 26 generations, the family has always
personally managed the business making innovative, sometimes courageous choices,
always with unwavering respect for tradition and the land.
Today Marchese Iiero Antinori is the director of the company, assisted by his three daugh-
ters, Albiera, Allegra and Alessia, who are personally involved in the business.
Te qualities of tradition, passion and instinct have made Antinori one of the leading Ital-
ian producers of ne quality wines.
Every vintage, every terroir, every idea is a new beginning, a new quest to raise our quality
margins. As Marchese Iiero loves to repeat: ancient roots play an important role in our
philosophy, but they have never held back our spirit of innovation.
Besides continuous development of the familys estates in Tuscany and Umbria, invest-
ments have been made over time in other areas highly suited to quality wine production, in
Italy and abroad, in a quest to promote new terroirs, rich in winegrowing potential.

Antinori continually experiment with their vineyards and cellars, with selections of native
and international clones, growing methods, vineyard altitudes, fermentation methods and
temperatures, traditional and modern vinication techniques, types of wood, size and age
of barrels, and various bottle-ageing periods.
Te history of the Mazzei family is closely linked not just to the history of winemaking in
Tuscany, but to the political and cultural history of the entire region.
Ser Lapo Mazzei is considered the father of the Chianti name: he authored the rst
known document using the denomination, a commercial contract bearing his signature,
dated December 16, 1398.
Te historic estate of Fonterutoli has belonged to the Mazzei family since 1435, passing
from father to son through 24 generations. Another important historical gure in the
family was Filippo Mazzei (1730-1816). An eccentric and restless traveler, intellectually
inclined and scholarly, he was asked by his friend Tomas Jeerson, future president of the
United States, to plant a vineyard at his estate in Monticello, Virginia. Ie undertook the
journey with a group of vineyard workers and planted the rst vineyards in that part of the
New Vorld.

he history of Iungary goes back more than 3000 years, during which its strategic geographical position close
to the centre of Europe made it subject to many alternating periods of invasion and peace. In the third century
A.D., when Iungary was part of the Roman Empire, the province of Iannonia (part of the Danube Basin) was one
of the richest provinces.
Under the Magyars, Iungary became an independent kingdom in the 9th century. Te Arpd Dynasty centralized power,
introduced Christianity and took the necessary diplomatic measures to construct the feudal Iungarian state. Once the Arp-
dian dynasty went extinct, the Anjous took the feudal Magyar state to the height of its glory. Te last legendary king of the
Middle Ages was Matthias Corvinus, whose mercenary army protected Europe from the Ottoman threat. After the expulsion
of the Turks in 1699, the whole of Iungary remained under Iabsburg domination until 1867 when Emperor Joseph I was
constrained to conclude a compromise recognizing the independence of the Iungarian state. A federated Austro-Iungarian
Empire was formed: this Age of Dualism set o an economic, cultural and intellectual rebirth in Iungary. Te First Vorld
Var brought the end of the Austrian-Iungarian Empire. In 1920, the Treaty of Trianon was signed, changing geographical
boundaries and reducing Iungarys territory by 71 and its population by two-thirds.
Notwithstanding its initial neutrality, Iungary became involved in the Second Vorld Var alongside Italy and Cermany. By
1949, Iungary had become a Soviet-style socialist state.
In 1989, Iungary was declared a republic. On 1 May 2004 Iungary acceded to the European Union.

he Romans planted the rst vineyards in the Carpathian Basin and extended them to Sz-
ermsg, Baranya, Tolna, the hills of Buda and the area around Lake Fert. Crape varieties
of Italian and French origin had been introduced to the area by the time of the Turkish occu-
pation. Serbs, escaping from the Turkish invasion, sought refuge in the Eger countryside and
introduced the Kadarka grape plants.
Sanguingo cremisi and black muscatel were planted in the Alfld, the Creat Ilains, as well as in Tokaj.
Te Tokaj-Iegyalja region, internationally renowned since the 16th century, is famous for its sweet white
wines made from grapes with noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), a benecial dense mold which causes the
grape to shrivel, concentrating and intensifying both sugar and avour. Te botrytised grapes, aged in oak
barrels, produce very elegant, intensely avored dessert wines.
During Roman times, the northern shore of Lake Balaton was the heart of viticulture. Te terrain of
loess and sand still gives birth to the areas speciality, the Olaszrizling. Towards the end of the 1980s, the
southern shore of the lake also became a prosperous viticultural region. Other esteemed wines from the
Balaton hills include the various Badacsony wines from the Badacsony area on Lake Balatons north shore.

he cultivation of grapes also goes back to Roman times in Szekszrd,
an important wine producing region in Southern Transdanubia. Mea-
sures to protect local noble wines were enacted by the rst Iungarian kings.
Today, the region stretches out over the hills of Szekszrd and the western
valley of Vlgysg, covering over 2800 hectares. A historical wine, the Bi-
kavr, or Bulls Blood, seems to have taken its name from the nearby Bika
(Bull) Iill.

olna, part of the Szekszrd region until 1997, is another important
wine producing region. Te beauty of the landscape, with its ordered
vineyards and its wine bars along the main road, attracts many tourists.
Vine lovers receive a warm welcome in the wine cellars in Iaks, Mcsny,
Simontornya, Felsnyk, Igysz and other communities in the Vlgysg
district. Btaapti is among these communities, a small town close to both
Lake Szlka and Lake Zsibrik.
Tolna

he Btaapti Estate is situated in the hills of Tolna near the Danube River and 150 kilometres south of Buda-
pest. Te estate has a long tradition of wine cultivation: It was originally an ethnically Cerman settlement. In
the 1700s a granary was built there, the underground cellars of which are still being used today to age Btaapti
wines.
Btaaptis history is directly connected to the Apponyi family who once owned the estate. Te Apponyi family (of French
origin) established themselves in the region in the 17th century when they purchased the large Igysz estate and various
smaller, contiguous estates in Tolna. On the ground oor of the estate mansion there is a press house for winemaking. Among
the various family properties, Btaapti was characterized by its capability of producing quality wines. In order to make the
best use of the natural attributes of the land, the Apponyis brought about several innovations in viticulture as well as in enol-
ogy.
Te majority of the vineyards already present on the estate are on the rolling hills of the Vlgysg district, known for the fra-
grance of its wines. Additional vineyards have been planted on slightly dierent soils in order to obtain the best microclimate
for each grape variety.
Today, half of the vineyards have been planted with white grape varieties and the other half with red. Te main white varieties
are Chardonnay, Zldveltelini and Traminer while Kkfrankos and Merlot are the main red varieties. Sauvignon Blanc, Iinot
Cris and Rhine Riesling (whites) and, Cabernet Franc, and Iinot Noir (reds) are being cultivated in smaller quantities.

n the 1780s, in addition to serving as the estates granary, Btaapti had an under-
ground cellar system built into the loess hillside behind it, its various tunnels
lined with brick. Tose caverns still exit today and, after 300 years, still provide
a constant temperature which uctuates by less than 1C a year. For this reason,
Btaapti continues to use these historic underground caverns to store the 225-litre
oak barrels and bottles in which the estates wines are aged. As regards the various
preceding phases, signicant investments were made in the winemaking facilities
in 1991. Te new winery now contains modern equipment for the soft-pressing
of grapes, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks, and a new
bottling line.

he Btaapti estate seeks to attain the nest varietal expression through
the separate vinication of the grape varieties. Iarticular attention is
paid to the cultivation of native white and red grape varieties. Especially the
icon wine of the winery, called Tzk Domb, which was rst produced in
2003.
Te areas microclimate is particularly suited to the production of fresh, elegant
white wines, represented by Traminer, Rhine Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Zld-
veltelini.
