Study Techniques . . . Examination Preparation.

Step 1: Summary Prepare summary notes for each chapter. These could be as short as possible (remember you still have the textbook and your extensive notes in your notebook this is what is called "class notes"). rite the summaries onto one pa!e with colour codes and anythin! that helps you remember. "or some sections you can even put your notes in table format. #f you have you own study or room you can put them up somewhere where you will see them even when you are not lookin! for them. This makes the concepts familiar to you and reduces memori$in!. hen preparin!% you can !roup your work in units that are related which will help with understandin! and interpretation. #n this step% althou!h you are not tryin! to memori$e anythin!% some of the concepts start to stick in your memory% as you come across them in the chapters that make a unit. Step 2: Practicing answering questions "or each unit% you can now !o throu!h exam type &uestions and try to answer them usin! your summary notes or your textbook or your class notes. #n other words% do not try to answer them from the top of your head unless you are '(() sure about the answer. *o not avoid repeatin! &uestions% i.e. if you come across the same &uestion more than once+ answer it a!ain because repetition helps to consolidate the concepts in your mind. #f you can,t seem to !et the correct answer from all your resources% then you must contact you teacher or someone that can help do not simply leave the &uestion as it mi!ht appear in an exam or a &uestion similar to that. Step 3: Answering question without notes This step is similar to the previous one except you answer the &uestions without the notes or the textbook but a!ain one unit at a time. hen you finish answerin! a &uestion% you mark yourself and where you did not !et the ri!ht answer do the necessary corrections so that you do not make them same mistake a!ain. here possible% try and fi!ure out why you !ot the answer wron! i.e. what chain of thou!ht did you use in comin! up with an answer and why it did not work. -!ain% do not avoid repetition to consolidate these concepts. Step 4: oing an exam paper .ere you can do a full exam paper without usin! your notes and make sure that you do it in the allocated time i.e. in / hours. (we will talk more about time mana!ement in an exam in the section on writin! exams) hen you finish% you !o throu!h each &uestion% nark yourself and make the necessary

corrections. This includes multiple choice &uestions (more hints on how to answer these &uestions in the next section). *o as many exam papers as possible. .ere # would recommend that you purchase a study !uide that has lots of &uestions in it.
