he New Destiny Family

Success Center of
Paterson has been grant-
ed on behalf of William Paterson
University and welcomed by the
city of Paterson to turn Public
School 6 into a Full Service
Community School. A Full
Service Community School is a
strategy for organizing the
resources of the community
around student success.
The main resources
provided include a core
instructional program,
educational and cultur-
al enrichment, and
services that remove
barriers to learning
(physical, dental, and
mental social services).
The Hawthorne Gospel
Church, on behalf of Jim
Bushoven, pastor of community
development, have partnered
with New Destiny to help find
volunteer tutors that would
invest their time into these pre-
cious, yet under-resourced chil-
dren just around the corner!
This is not a faith-based initia-
tive and so therefore all are wel-
come to inquire.
After the first round of stan-
dardized tests this year by the stu-
dents of School 6 (K-8th grade),
only 18 percent passed the appro-
priate language arts test and only
27 percent passed the appropriate
math test. In Grades 4-5 only one
child passed language arts. The
need is great but so is the oppor-
tunity.

ing New Destiny discover possible
tutors and therefore those interest-
ed in tutoring can contact him at
jim@hgcusa.org for more informa-
tion regarding the process. Once
interested and official forms are
received, which include criminal
background check and fingerprint-
ing, New Destiny will work on set-
ting up a time for tutor training.
No previous tutoring experience is
necessary.

ost people go to
work every day
with the expectation
that at the end of the week
there will be a pay check either
handed to them or automati-
cally deposited into their bank
account. From that check all
the bills are paid with hopeful-
ly, a little left over for enter-
tainment, enjoyment and accu-
mulation for the future.
Though most people do not
overtly dislike their job, what-
ever they may do for a living,
they are all smiles when the
check arrives on pay day. Some
are blessed to enjoy their occu-
pation, are proud of what they
do and their job performance
looking forward to going to
work each week, they are even
happier when compensated for
their toil. But, what happens
when the job comes to an end.
There are three natural
reasons for job termination:
one is by circumstances beyond
your control and in the hands
of the employer; another is by
injury or disability and the
third is by choice. The greatest
example of choice is called
retirement. Yes, along the road
of a persons working career,
they may have chosen to quit
their job to take another one
elsewhere for advancement or
as a preemptive move before
being terminated or before
there was an employer failure,
merger or down-sizing. Yet, in
a perfect world, most of us
would enjoy receiving the gold
watch for 40 years of loyal serv-
ice and performance to the
company that we helped build.
Alas, that is rarely the case
these days with average
employment tenure of about 6
or 7 years at any one place of
employment with little corpo-
rate loyalty and no pension
plan as an inducement to
remain a loyal employee for
decades.
Its been my observation
that most people retiring today
have accumulated a lot less
capital given their average
income over their working life-
time, when compared to people
retiring just a decade ago. It is
my opinion that inflation will
rise significantly over the next
thirty years as compared to the
last thirty, where money just
wont last as long, buy as much
or grow as fast as the need to
spend it drains the portfolio to
nothingness before death!
This is before allowing for the
cost of any health issues that
may arise as we age, which,
most people do not factor into
their budgeting calculations.
In addition, there may be long-
term care expenses with the
incidence of Alzheimers, senil-
ity and dementia on the rise.
One of the reasons this phe-
nomenon is occurring, in my
opinion, is the extension of life
expectancy. That in itself poses
an even greater financial issue
called longevity risk. In
other words, might we outlive
our money? There are tens of
thousands of people now over
the age of 100 in our country
and around the world, the
centenarian club. These peo-
ple are also getting close to the
Super Centenarian club;
folks over the age of 110. Will
people living to 100 and
beyond have enough money to
survive?

ooth sensitivity affects
most of us during our
lifetime. It can be a
temporary, intermittent symp-
tom indicating dentin hyper-
sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity
can also be a prolonged,
chronic problem indicating
permanent nerve (pulp) dam-
age to the tooth.
A reversible pulpit, as
described in part three, is a
short, temporary, sharp pain
that stops when cold
or heat is removed
from the tooth. Many
patients have felt
similar sensitivity
when theyve had a
deep filling or
crown (cap) placed
on or in the live
tooth. This tempo-
rary inflammation
can last a few weeks,
and in many cases,
Advil, ibuprofen,
Aspirin, or other
ove r - t he - c ount e r
anti-inflammatories
relieve the pain
quickly. When med-
ication does not help,
or there is irreversible
pulpitis with serious,
permanent damage to
the pulp, the best
treatment is to
remove the nerve dur-
ing a root canal treatment.
This treatment may save the
tooth indefinitely when
restored with a crown.
Unfortunately, the only other
way to treat a tooth that has
abscessed is to remove it.
Nowadays, the constant
use of teeth whitening prod-
ucts may be dangerous to the
health and sensitivity of a
tooth in the future.
Whitening products, whether-
over-the-counter or given by a
dental professional, end up
dehydrating the water in the
dentinal tubules. This is a side
effect of whitening. Constant
use of these products can
cause permanent dentin
hypersensitivity, pulp damage,
and brittle teeth in later years.
There are very few studies
that back up this statement,
but it is the new hot topic in
the dental profession.
Treatment of dentin
hypersensitivity is done in
various ways. They all act to
close or to block the dentinal
tubules. The sensitivity tooth-
paste Sensodyne contains
potassium nitrate, which
appears to act on the nerve,
blocking its pain signal to the
brain. Other treatments
include fluoride, varnish,
GLUMA, dental resins or
adhesives (bonding), lasers,
fillings, and calcium hydrox-
ide.
All of the above treat-
ments are available in my
office and may be used accord-
ing to each individuals neces-
sity.
Tooth sensitivity is a
common problem when it per-
sists. It should not be ignored.

lovers we have had
an assortment of pets
throughout the years, but cats
and dogs have been the pri-
mary choice when it comes to
our four-legged children.
Having deciding early on to
adopt only rescue animals, we
often had behavior issues to
address before peace would
reign.
When you
are introducing
new members to your home,
there are facts that must be
considered. Dogs are territori-
al and will often be aggressive
to any new add-ition to their
home. Cats have the same
tendencies, and will fight to
defend their territories and
mark their spaces to show
their dominance.
There is hope
It is a challenge to get
dogs and cats to coexist but it
can be done with time and
patience. The usual process is
to separate the two physically;
however, this is not a practical
long term solution. Though
caging and closed rooms can
be used in the beginning for
safety, creating a plan of
action for new behaviors can
help you achieve harmony
with time and practice.
The first steps
Obedience in the most
important factor when intro-
ducing your older pets to the
newest member. Both cats and
dogs can be taught basic
commands and no must be
understood immediately.
Chances are your new pet
will understand your com-
mands by word or by tone,
but they can also be re-
emphasized with treats and
affection.
While the older pets are
contained, allow the new
pet to slowly acclimatize
themselves to the new sur-
roundings and smells. By let-
ting them wander on their
own for short periods, they
can scatter their own scent
within the home which allows
the other to become familiar
to the new scent.
Once the new pet is
secured, allow the older pet to
investigate and acquaint itself
with the new scents, and
reward them positively for
acceptable behavior. This
stage may take some time for
both cats and dogs to adjust
but the more they feel safe the
faster the process.
The introduction
Once you see
signs of acceptance
you can introduce
physical contact.
With each pet
being held securely
and only when they
are calm in each
others presence,
you can allow them
to sniff each other.
Be ready to correct negative
behavior and offer protection
from aggression swiftly. By
repeating this process often
and increasing the time in
each others company, they
will begin to learn to adapt to
the new situation.
Dogs are pack animals
and are happy to be with their
families and though cats are
more aloof, they too enjoy
affection from their owners. In
time you will begin to see that
your dog and cat can coexist
peacefully without fear or
aggression.
You may find they
become the best of friends and
they may agree to give each
other a wide berth. Whatever
the case, you can teach both
dogs and cats to be comfort-
able in their new home safely.
