YOU TOO CAN BE AN ARCHAEOLOGIST!

In this project we are each playing roles. You are members of teams of archaeologists from Oxford University in the United Kingdom and I am the chairperson of the Elizabethan Archaeology Department of Oxford University. The government of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is constructing a new museum in London. Artifacts from the Elizabethan era (during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, [1558-1603]) have been discovered at the site of the new museum. As is always the case in such an event, construction has been halted although the crews continue to be paid. It is necessary to complete the archaeological analysis as soon as possible. Field crews from Oxford have collected debris and it is now being turned over to you, divided into possible items. Instructions: 1. There are fourteen (14) teams. 2. Each team should choose a team leader. Each team leader will remove one (1) bag of debris (inside a bag inside a numbered bag). Your team number is the bag number. 3. Open the bags carefully and remove the pieces inside (CAREFULLY, SO YOU DO NOT CUT YOURSELF). 4. Attempt to reconstruct the item(s) by taping it (them) together. Pieces will be missing and it is impossible to reconstruct any item(s) entirely. You may receive one (1) or two (2) items or one (1) item with two (2) pieces. 5. After 20 minutes the team leaders can circulate among the teams to see if another team has any of their pieces. Only 1 other team will have any of another teams pieces. Team leaders can circulate for 4 minutes. If, after those 4 minutes, a team leader wants to discuss the project with me he/she can then do so. TURN-IN REQUIREMENTS: 1. After your item(s) is (are) reconstructed, to the best of the teams ability, each team will submit a written report. a. The report must be addressed to Rhonda Stange, Chairperson of the Elizabethan Archaeology Department of Oxford University. b. It must identify the team number, the team leader and the names of all team members. c. The report must include an accurate and complete description of the item(s) (color, texture, special markings, etc.). d. The report must include measurements of the item(s) and a drawing of the item(s) on a one-toone scale. Use the tape measures METRIC scale only, the measuring system used by all archaeologists. e. The report must include the teams agreed-upon hypothesis as to the items (items) use during the Elizabethan Era. If any team member disagrees with the teams hypothesis as to use, any team member disagreeing must identify himself/herself and provide his/her alternate hypothesis in the report. f. Each team member must sign the report.

EACH REQUIREMENT MUST BE COMPLETED.

2. SO NOW, WOULD YOU WANT TO BE AN ARCHAEOLOGIST? In a short essay each student must individually explain his/her own perceived advantages or disadvantages as to being an archaeologist.

FYI: The bags (and consequently the size and use of the item(s) and the size of the pieces and difficulty of reconstruction) have been distributed completely randomly.

THE REPORTS AND ESSAYS ARE DUE AT THE START OF CLASS ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2013. THIS GIVES YOU TWO (2) CLASS HOURS AND BLUEJAY LEARNING COMMUNITY TIME.
