Reason(s) for presenting this verbatim. Learning issues. I chose this verbatim because I want to learn how to discus and counsel a patient who doesnt want to talk with you because he feels ashamed with his emotions toward his diseases and learn how to share the Gospel in this context.

III.

Preparation A) How did you prepare yourself? On my way to the ward, I ask God for his wisdom and guidance. I remind myself that I will represent God to a stranger and pray that what happens there it will be for Gods glory. B) Things for which you will be alert?

I will be alert to the patients feelings and being sensitive to his condition

C) How will you relate to this person? IV. I will relate to the person as a counselor and a chaplain.

Observations: It was only one patient in the room. The bed curtain was open and the patient was lying on his back. The patient was wearing the hospital gown. Near the patients bad there was a lady looking at him. There were a lot of fruits on the table.

The Verbatim Itself: C1: Hello, Im Joshua and Im a chaplain. P1: Hello Joshua. (with a softly voice) C2: May I know your name sir? P2: Yes, my name is Anadan (looking to his wife) C3: Well, nice to meet you sir (smiles). (the patient has a hard breath) C4: May I know what happened? P4: I came to the hospital because I was very sick. (looking to the ceiling, I felt he is a little bit irritated) C5: Do you have a job? P5: Yes, I need to provide for my family. C6: And how do you feel now? A1: He is better now, he responds to the treatment. C7: Thats great news. Does that mean that soon youll be discharged? P7: (the patient puffs and looks to his wife) Yes, maybe but (closed his eyes) C8: Are you worried about something? (1 minute of silence, I was looking at him and I saw hes trying to say something) P8: Hmmm... (nods his head) Im here because I had fever and severe headaches. Those headaches were so strong that I felt unconscious, several times, until my wife came home and saw me.

C9: Hmmm (Im looking to his wife) P9: She took me to the hospital and now the doctors said that Im beyond any danger and the treatment is good. C10: Im glad to hear that (smiles). But I sense even with doctors assurance, you are worried about something P10: (nodding his head) I dont know what to say C11: Its okay to be worried because (he interrupted me) P11: Im worried because maybe Ill go home and I will have headaches again and I will fall unconscious again. This is so so whats the word? C12: Scary? P12: Yes (closing his eyes) C13: Hmm well, sir, Im here to pray for you, and we can bring in prayer all our fears. You know, God said in the Bible that we can cast our anxieties on him and he will take care of us. So, may I pray for you and bring your fear before him? P13: (nods his head) C14: Heavenly Father, I come before you with my brother Anandan and his wife. You are our Father and we bring before you our problems and struggles. I pray for Anandan to heal him and help him regain his strength. Please give him good health that he can go back to his family and provide for them. Please cast away any fear that he has right now, and bring your peace into his soul. Help him not to worry about his future, because his future is in your hands. Also I pray and I give thanks for his wife, who love him and support him. Please comfort them in this time of suffering and struggle. We come boldly before you, because of Jesus Christ who died for our sin and sickness so that, if we trust him, we will not have any reason to worry about our future. And all of this we asked in Jesus precious name, Amen! It was my pleasure to meet you and pray for you. P14: Thank you, I think I need prayer. C15: I will pray for you and tomorrow I will visit you and we can talk more and pray. P15: Okay, thank you!

C16: Bye! P16: (both the patient and his wife smiled) Bye! ANALYSIS: Call Length 15 minutes A) Patients Topics Listed a. His present health b. Fear about his disease B) Patients interpretation, explanations, insights summarized. The patient is not calm, even if his current condition is improving, because he is worried that his headaches will relapse. C) Pastors evaluation of the opening, middle and closing phase of call. The opening of the conversation was awkward, because the patient seemed to be irritated and wasnt in a good mood to talk. However, in the middle he was opened to share his problems and even express his feelings. Towards the end, I think the prayer changed his perspective and he was calmer then at the beginning. D) Pastors emotional reactions-success and or failure identify I was a little uncomfortable at the beginning because I saw that the patient is not really happy to talk with me. But I tried to help him see that Im there to support him and I think he felt that because he was trying to express what he feels. Also I think that the prayer had a good impact on him. E) What specifically would you have done differently? I could have emphasized more the importance to express his feelings for his own good and I should read some verses from the Bible on the subject of fear and anxiety.

VII.

Pastoral Diagnosis: Anadan had a lot of fear about his future and he was uncertain about his own health, even if the doctors said that he is in no danger. Also I think that his fears made him feel ashamed in front of his wife and others. I

think that a follow-up is needed and with pastoral care he will be open to hear the Gospel and pray to God. VIII. Pastoral Care Plan: A) What do you plan to do in your future ministry with this patient? I plan to continue to counsel him about his fears and I will share the Gospel as the solution for every fear that he may have. Also I will pray for him and his wife.
