STORY MAP TYPE 3

Beginning: Portugal scientists have discovered that when ripe, fruits fluoresce brightly. Alexander Khamalov placed an apple in a device for measuring. The apple produced light when excited by the machines laser.

Middle: When the laser light hits the molecules, they drop into a lower vibration state, releasing energy in the form of light. The fluorescence spectrum varies with the fruits age, becoming more intense as the fruit matures and gives off more gases. The fluorescence signature determine the age and ripeness of fruit.

End: In future, the technique will be useful for fruits which are often stored for long periods. Producers certainly need fast, cheap ways of determining ripeness without damaging fruit. This laser method could be of considerable benefit since it enables people to gauge the storage duration of fruits. 1.2 FIVE WS CHART

SUMMARY

Normally, when people shop for fruits, they always smell, squeeze and inspect the fruits when choosing them. Nowadays, the scientists in Portugal discovered that if fruits which are zapped with a laser, fluoresced brightly. Alexander Khamalov , a physicist, placed an apple in a device for measuring. In theory, volatile organic gases should not fluoresce. To his surprise, the pungent gases given off by the apple produced light when excited by the machines laser. The fluorescence signature can determine the age and ripeness of fruit. It would be a more objective way of checking fruit for ripeness. This discovery is beneficial because it enables fruit producers to determine ripeness of the fruits cheaply and effectively. By this laser method, people can even gauge the storage duration of fruits.
