Order of Service for 16 March 2014 Introit Hymn 520 (BCP 1938) 1 Unto the hills around do I lift up My longing eyes O whence for me shall my salvation come, From whence arise? From God, the Lord, doth come my certain aid, From God, the Lord, who heaven and earth hath made. 3 Jehovah is himself thy keeper true, Thy changeless shade; Jehovah thy defence on thy right hand Himself hath made. And thee no sun by day shall ever smite; No moon shall harm thee in the silent night. SANDON 2 He will not suffer that thy foot be moved: Safe shalt thou be. No careless slumber shall his eyelids close, Who keepeth thee.
Behold our God, the Lord, he slumbereth ne'er,

The Second Sunday in Lent

Who keepeth Israel in his holy care. 4 From every evil shall he keep thy soul, From every sin; Jehovah shall preserve thy going out, thy coming in. Above thee watching, he whom we adore shall keep thee henceforth, yea, forevermore.

The Gathering of the Community

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. R/ And with thy spirit.

Collect for Purity

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Law

Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

The Proclamation of the Word

A Reading from the Book of Genesis Now the Lord said to Abram, Go from your country and your kindred and your fathers house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Genesis 12.14a V/ The Word of the Lord. R/ Thanks be to God. PSALM 121 I WILL lift up mine eyes unto the hills: / O whence cometh my help? 2 My help cometh even from the LORD, / who hath made heaven and earth. 3 HE will not suffer thy foot to be moved: / and he that keepeth thee will not sleep. 4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel / shall neither slumber nor sleep. 5 THE LORD himself is thy keeper: / the LORD is thy defence upon thy right hand; 6 So that the sun shall not burn thee by day, / neither the moon by night. 7 THE LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: / yea, it is even he that shall keep thy soul. 8 The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in, / from this time forth for evermore. Gospel Acclamation: Create in me a clean heart, a clean heart, O God. The Son of Man must be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. Create in me a clean heart, a clean heart, O God.

V/ The Lord be with you. R/ And with thy spirit. V/ The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John R/ Glory be to thee, O Lord. Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God. Jesus answered him, Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above. Nicodemus said to him, How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a

second time into the mothers womb and be born? Jesus answered, Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, You must be born from above. The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus said to him, How can these things be? Jesus answered him, Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3.117 V/ The Gospel of Christ R/ Praise be to thee, O Christ.

and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead: whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spake by the prophets. And I believe one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the Faithful (please kneel) The Lenten Confession and Absolution
The Lord is full of compassion and mercy, slow to anger and of great kindness. Let us confess our sins remembering before God the times when we have fallen from temptation into sin. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin: Lord, have mercy. R/ Lord, have mercy. Against you, you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight: Christ, have mercy. R/ Christ, have mercy. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me: Lord, have mercy. R/ Lord, have mercy. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him: have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Sermon The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God, of God; Light, of Light; very God, of very God; begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father; through whom all things were made: who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the scriptures,

The Peace (please stand)

The peace of the Lord be always with you. R/ And with thy spirit.

Offertory Hymn 116 (1938) 1 Giver of the perfect gift, only hope of human race, hear the prayer our hearts uplift trembling at thy throne of grace. 3 Who can save us, Lord, but thou? Let thy mercy show thy power; lo, we plead thy promise now, now, in this accepted hour.

GIBBONS 2 Though the accusing voice within speaks of many a wrong to thee, thou canst cleanse from every sin, thou canst set the conscience free. 4 Oh! may these our Lenten days, blessed by thee, with thee be passed, that with purer, nobler praise we may keep thy feast at last.

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest.

MERBECKE

5 God the Holy Trinity, grant the mercy we implore; God the One, all praise to thee through the ages evermore. Amen.

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christs holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me. Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me. Wherefore, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we thy humble servants, with all thy holy Church, remembering the precious death of thy beloved Son, his mighty resurrection, and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again in glory, do make before thee, in this sacrament of the holy bread of eternal life and the cup of everlasting salvation, the memorial which he hath commanded: R/ We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee, and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

Prayer over the gifts

God of wisdom, May the light of the eternal Word, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, guide us to your glory. We ask this in his name. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving (please kneel)

The Lord be with you. R/ And with thy spirit. Lift up your hearts. R/ We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. R/ It is meet and right so to do.

MERBECKE

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, creator and preserver of all things. Who hast bidden us thy faithful people to cleanse our hearts and to prepare with joy for the paschal feast; that reborn through the waters of baptism, and renewed in the Eucharistic mystery, we may be more fervent in prayer and more generous in works of love. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

WAREHAM 2 Give tongues of fire and hearts of love, to preach the reconciling word; give power and unction from above, whene'er the joyful sound is heard. 4 Baptize the nations; far and nigh the triumph of the cross record; the Name of Jesus glorify, till every kindred call him Lord.

The Dismissal

3 O dearest Lord, thy sacred feet with nails were pierced for me: O pour thy blessing on my feet that they may follow thee.

4 O dearest Lord, thy sacred heart with spear was pierced for me: O pour thy spirit in my heart that I may live for thee.

Our purpose in the Parish of St. Michael and All Angels is to foster the spiritual growth and development of its members by creating an atmosphere of belonging to a loving Christian family; to nurture that growth and to express our faith in Christ through the sharing of the Sacraments and the Word in Public Worship; and to mobilize all our resources, both human and material, in order to reach out to others, within and outside the parish, who need our help and compassion.

The Season of Lent and our Liturgy

Lent is a period of preparation for Easter and an excellent time for the preparation of people for Baptism. It is also a period for intentional reconciliation. It is not, then, simply a time of wailing, moaning, and gnashing of teeth. It is a season of contemplation, prayer, and discernment. Its austerityboth in our personal life and in our corporate practice as a Church in the liturgyis a way of heightening our sense of celebration when Easter finally arrives. In order to properly feast, we humans have usually found that it is important to engage in a period of fasting. In this way the feast is all the sweeter. There are several features of the liturgy at St. Michael & All Angels that characterize Lent: Alleluia (or the lack thereof): Alleluia is never said during Lent. This way, when the Great Alleluia of the Easter Vigil is proclaimed, it has all the more impact. The Great Litany is sung on the First Sunday in Lent in procession before Mass. Gloria in excelsis We never sing the Glory to God (Gloria in excelsis) in Lent, even on Sundays and other feasts. The Fourth Sunday in Lent, Rose Sunday Many Churches in the AngloCatholic tradition, celebrate the Fourth Sunday in Lent, the mid-way point between Ash Wednesday and Easter, as a day of less solemnity with a bit more fullness than other Lenten services. This day is known as Rose Sunday, Refreshment Sunday, or Mothering Sunday, where we give God thanks for our Blessed Mother, the Holy Mother Church, and our earthly mothers. Rather than the usual Lenten vestments, rose coloured vestments are worn, a practice that most probably originates with the mediaeval tradition of blessing roses on this day.

Welcome Visitors!
